Zip ties also work. That's what I did to put the tail in my Lyra.

Do you know a way to reroot tails without taking apart the body? I did a poor job on my last custom's tail [it was too short] and now there is paint all over it and I want to try rerooting again.

Okay I kinda had to make the hole a bit bigger to fit the tail through (I used the exact same amount as a regular pony), will it go back down to normal size eventually?

I'm actually about to start my first G4 custom and this stage was what was worrying me the most.

Over a year on down the road, and I have to agree with you. Tails, shoot, can do 'em in a minute.
Hair takes DAYS. Ugh.

no, it takes MONTHS if you kind of a lazy, busy-with-other-things pony like moi

By the time I'm at the re-hairing stage, I've got the momentum going that my mindset is 'YEAH! LETS GET THIS DONE!'

At DollyHair they have a rehairing tool, if that helps ^^

I've gotten quite good at using these long straight needles for dolls that I found at Jo-Anne's and dental floss. :3

Can you bulk up the tail hair at all? Hasbro seems to skimp on the tail hair of the G4 toys, and it's kind of sad, given how thick and luxurious they look in the show. I'd be willing to cut the heads off my G4 toys just so I can give them thicker tails. Y'know, I bet a zip tie would work well as an anchor - no metal to rust, and tougher than thread. (I'm just grateful my almost-30-year-old G1 pony doesn't have any rust. She's *white*!)

how'd you get the old tail out, when I tug on it I feel like I'm ganna break it. Plus theirs that piece of plastic that holds the head in. Do I just rip that off too?

Huh. My tech was the opposite of yours. I used this method: [link] . It's sorta the opposite of how you do it, but it also worked and you don't double-up the hair you're pulling through the hole.

CustomAnon In reply to Kohdok [2011-07-06 02:43:39 +0000 UTC]
It's almost the exact thing? Except for the way the hair is wrapped in there. They'll both work! the only thing is I pull the hair from the neck in, and that goes from the tail in, then tied.

question; how do you remove sculpted tails? other than very carefully?

Just with a X-acto blade I suppose- I haven't done a custom where the sculpted hair was removed.

This part I actually had to figure out on my own for my custom Derpy, since your tutorial wasn't ready at the time. But thanks for posting this. This will be useful if anypony else decides to make one.
