the black is SUPER hard to go over so it usually won't work or take a TON of coats and look all bad and stuff.

What size and type of brushes do you use for painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CustomAnon In reply to SwingyTheWeird [2012-08-24 00:37:28 +0000 UTC]

I use various small-sized round and square brushes from my college bookstore for the body, and for details I really like this brush, it's my favorite! [link]

I have this one because I happen to collect dolls as well. Their shipping is very high for just an item- but if you can find something similar!

is liquitex acrylic color good for painting? i had good results with the eyes of my pony, but i'm still hesitant to paint the whole thing.

CustomAnon In reply to Tokyomewmew45 [2012-08-24 00:39:23 +0000 UTC]

It is, definitely-- liquitex is a high-quality acrylic that is better than what I typically use

StarshineBeast [2012-06-19 22:05:12 +0000 UTC]

You don't use a gloss or glaze at all to keep the paint from chipping or melting with moisture? I mean, most customs aren't meant for anything more than display, but I do occasionally lightly handle my ponies and I'm worried about needing to constantly touch up a custom.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CustomAnon In reply to StarshineBeast [2012-08-24 00:38:58 +0000 UTC]

No, I have had a hard time finding a sealant that stands up to what I need. Most people use Modge Podge, but it is not waterproof, it will just goop up and stick to things. I've also used Testors-- but under handling and play that gets sticky (and I do love to play with my toys )

Moozua [2012-06-01 00:30:28 +0000 UTC]

If you handle it roughly. I haven't had too much of a problem.

I've been looking to recolour one of my toys, but wasn't sure how to go about it. I still want the plastic look, and I read in a comment above that you use modge podge.
Could using art spray paint work, would you know? I would prefer an even coat, free of any brush strokes for the recolour.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CustomAnon In reply to tsarnickyii [2012-08-24 00:40:28 +0000 UTC]

I've had a friend who has used a model paint spray kit, and that worked, but most typical art spray paints aren't designed for vinyl, so customizer beware.

You can also try dying the pony. I have done it in the past, but not recently.

SillyLilPuppet [2012-04-09 23:21:23 +0000 UTC]

I've actually stopped using craft paints due to their thicker chalky textures, have found that Liquitex heavy-body paints dry well and are very consistent and easy to mix. Plus, you can get a set with all the basic colors (white, black, red, blue, yellow, green) at AC Moores, use their coupon, and get it for under $20 ^0^ Mine's lasted me three years of heavy use, and the only color I have used more than half the tube of is white.

I bought model paint... like the kind when you are painting model cars, because my dad said it was cheaper. Will it work as well or not at all?

JaxxyLupei [2011-12-04 05:22:00 +0000 UTC]

Would nail polish remover work if there's no Acetone to be found?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CustomAnon In reply to JaxxyLupei [2011-12-04 19:40:27 +0000 UTC]

Actually, it's 100% pure acetone. Nailpolish remover is ok on some circumstances: It's not a darker color than you pony. If you're working on a white pony and have blue nail polish remover, it can stain the plastic blue. yellow and white are good. Better if it has acetone in it.

Also you can use rubbing alcohol- a 70 or 90%- but the bottle of acetone was only 99 cents at walmart for me, I'd suggest investing, it'll save you some extra scrubbing.

Have you ever tried spray paint? If I customize a pony, I might try it and was wondering if you had any experience with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CustomAnon In reply to SailorKnightWing [2011-11-17 01:21:55 +0000 UTC]

Most spray paint doesn't adhere to plastic well. uses some kind of spray technique-- testors maybe? to do her ponies. You'll have to ask her for more specifics-- but don't use general all-purpose spray paint, you will ruin your pony.

How do you tackle painting the cutie mark? I'm working on a Roseluck, which probably has among the most difficult cutie mark designs to paint in a small space. How do you clean off excess paint in the instances you paint over the pencil lines?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Glaber [2011-08-25 06:40:35 +0000 UTC]

one more question, about the paint. Is there anything you do to it after you let it dry? I ask because whenever i see the Blind bag customs on Equestria Daily they say something about sealing. Maybe that's just for the blind bag models, but i thought it would be best to ask.

Would this method of painting work on the original G1's? I don't see why it wouldn't, but I want to ask before I try it out. How different do those layers of paint make the pony feel? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm just getting in to customizing and restoring ponies and had to switch from oils on canvas into acrylics on ponies! It's great to see your method!

I somehow managed to find acetone, but not the 97 cent Onyx brand. will other brands work?

EX: Rustoleum or a brand found at a hardware store?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CustomAnon In reply to Glaber [2011-08-11 02:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Yep, as long as it's acetone, it should be good. Just don't let it set long on the pony- rinse it off after using paint remover
