Believe it or not, this is a wild bird, and this is pretty much a full frame image. While sitting in my blind waiting for Hooded Mergansers, this immature Red-tailed Hawk landed a few feet away from me. It perched on a fallen tree, and focused on a squirrel terrified by its presence. When the squirrel escaped into the canopy, its attention went to a muskrat swimming down the river, which it also was unable to capture. I have been incredibly close to raptors in the past, but never this close.Back Bay Fens

Most people who would look at the image before reading the description could easily assume this is a captive bird, but it is not. Patience is one of the most important aspects of wildlife photography and this image really shows how it has payed off. The detail in the feathers and the way the light reflects off of them is incredible not to mention detail in the beak and the eye. The white shoulder could have easily been overexposed, but it looks like the exposure in the whole image is right on the money. Considering how close the bird came into sight, the framing and pose is very appealing and really puts emphasis on the face. This I feel is one of the best bird portraits I have ever seen, and I'm sure many others will agree on that. A truly remarkable capture.

How can I not fav this. Such artistic beauty, it screams out "draw me." That's amazing he was so close to you, amazing. great placing of the bird, I mean great way of using negative space. You can tell this bird looks quite determined to catch something. Great job catching the expression on his face and in his eyes.

Incredibly intense focused attention in the hawk's stare, looking for something to eat for lunch. He/she would be welcome to stop by my backyard and have a squirrel or two.
