Description Despite its abundance in North America, the Red-tailed Hawk remains my favorite species of bird. It's about the time of year where you will see mating pairs building nests and courting in flight. This particular male was following a significantly larger female as she carried a large branch in her talons (nesting material). I absolutely love these birds.

NIce shot. It would have been a little better if you'd captured it before it was even with you. Nice light, sharp, not sure about the composition. Maybe a little more in front of the bird, to make the crop a little longer and thinner would help. IMO

Thanks Don

Unfortunately the group of shots I have of it coming towards me are plagued with poor head angles and awkward wing positions hah. I also agree with you on the comp, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the feedback.

Boy I wish I had a dollar for every shot i've thrown
away because I clipped a wing tip, the eye was closed,
the head or wing at weird angle, or I blew the focus,
still set for sitting shot when a flying shot appeared and
the exposure was off(too dark). Lifes a bear sometimes.

That's a beautiful creature. I'm impressed by how crisply you caught her in flight - you must have been watching her for quite some time to get this shot.

Red Tailed Hawks are still my absolute favorites as well... For 20 years I had one that perched on an old abandoned telephone pole, above a cliff near the edge of my parents' property. I spent many afternoons doing my homework outside with my friend. Now I have lived for 20 more years near a nesting pair that alternates territory with a pair of Red Shouldered Hawks, and occasionally other hawks, but the Red Tailed Hawks are the ones that I can't ever get enough of.
