Description While watching and photographing a very rare gull, it was hard not to take a break and photograph the Ospreys. This bird flew right over me with half a fish in its talons. Do you think it heard the shutter haha? Fish account for nearly 100% of the Ospreys diet, and while flying with fish, these birds actually make sure they hold the fish head first, to remain aerodynamic! One of the cooler things about Ospreys is the fact that one of their four toes is reversible, allowing them to either hold fish with two toes backwards and two toes forward, or one toe backwards and three toes forward. This gives them more options to always have the ability to hold a fish stable in flight.

Cool infos! Although the head first rule sounds not very solid to me. There might be better reasons for the bird to hold it that way than aerodynamics. Maybe they always approach prey from behind. I mean, otherwise he would get better aerodynamics if he turns the fish around after he bit of his head. I would like to start research now *g*.

And great photo

Saw one after fish at a lake at one point, birds of prey are captivating- you don't generally think of anything "majestic" in that size package but they certainly are graceful.
