Description
After hiking for 3 miles before dawn into the northern Massachusetts woods, my birding partner and I finally came upon a Pileated Woodpecker. This species is the largest Woodpecker in North America, and in the Northeast, is usually very elusive. They stand at nearly 2 feet tall and have a wingspan of nearly 30 inches. 5:40 in the morning, with a pair of Great Horned Owls calling far in the distance, in the middle of nowhere, all while watching a Pileated Woodpecker - - at least in my opinion, it doesn't get any better than that.Bald Hill Reservation

oooooo I saw one of those, here in Ontario, few years back.. before I had a decent camera. My elderly neighbour and I were talking and it flew by and landed in their tree. We couldn't believe what we were seeing.. that bird was humongous! When i went in to get the little camera I had then, he took off (of course). Didn't see him since. But always still looking.

Great shot Ryan! still looking for mine.... I've seen them, but way up high it the trees....I found an old nest hole, so I'm scouting that location to find this years nest!

We have those here in S. Florida. Get a pair of them together and they are LOUD! Once you hear them, you know who Woody Woodpecker was based upon.

thats awesome man! i was just camping at devils lake state park in wisconsin this weekend and saw one exploring a tree right near our campsite. it was about a foot tall, and it stayed right in front of us for about 5 minutes.
