Description shot this photo one afternoon in april, 2004, at my husband's work (a mile away from our home in idaho's rocky mountains).

i suppose this is a red fox, "silver phase" whatever that means (i mean, is it just a phase, or are they permanently mixed gray, black and red?)

i was able to make several photos, as the fox wasn't very afraid.

there is a silver morph of the red fox... you can tell he's a red because he has the black "stockings" on his feet!

You're welcome, and thanks! Cross foxes are red foxes, but so are silver foxes. Just some color variations.

Beautiful shot of a cross fox. <3

And to answer your question from the description, no red foxes never change color from red to black and back. If they're born red, black, or cross, they'll stay that color their whole lives.

I have never seen a crossed fox...

Send him over to Virginia. No... he'd need air holes to breathe in a box...

I'd love to see one though. I just don't know anyone in Idaho And it's a few thousand miles from me...

definitely looks like a cross fox to me :3 [Cross fox occur when a ordinary coloured red fox mates with one that kept its black or silver coat... Consequently the offspring will keep characteristic markings of each and typically have a cross shape on their backs :3]

Very nice catch though There's only the usual coloured red fox [Vulpes vulpes] around my house, with an occaisional gray fox [Urocyon cinereoargenteus]. The only spectacularly coloured critters I've been able to see are the coyotes and the black-phase squirrels!

sounds like you live in a rural or mountainous area too?

terceleto In reply to zasu [2008-02-01 18:52:07 +0000 UTC]

Rural for sure. It's pretty hilly, but no real mountains :3 For those I'd have to drive about 2-3 hours :3 There's pretty sizeable forests out where I am, but also a lot of open farmland too. There's a forest across from my house and a giant field behind mine [which belongs to my neighbour].

terceleto In reply to zasu [2008-02-01 22:05:33 +0000 UTC]

indeed it is! There are usually white tails around because of all the corn in the fields, and occasional fox, opossums, raccoon and skunk... and a more recent development is cougars and black bear :3 I haven't seen the either one of those yet personally, but my friends have had the cougars in their back yards!

i wish we had opossums here - i remember seeing a baby (or young one) that had gotten into my grandma's kitchen in ohio - when i was a kid.

thanks

i'm not certain that these foxes change color over the seasons. up in the mountains where i took this shot, our winters often last into april. i remember when my son was born april 8th, we were racing down snow covered roads (i remember because it made me very, very nervous)

so... i would think this fox would not have had enough time to replace much color. and, when i see these foxes in the winter walking over the snow, they look the same, maybe just thicker fur.

Felidire In reply to Felidire [2007-11-22 03:08:32 +0000 UTC]

looks kind of like a cross fox, actually

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zasu In reply to Felidire [2007-11-22 19:42:24 +0000 UTC]

that's what i first thought - that it was a cross-breed fox, then i did some googling, and found that crosses between red and gray foxes don't really happen - there's just these foxes that have mixed coloring that made people think that. from all the things i read, these color combinations are common in the native fox (not the european red foxes that were brought over and released to be hunted).

Felidire In reply to zasu [2007-11-23 03:53:48 +0000 UTC]

I mean like a cross-fox, like it has um.. black fur that paths along it's back and down it's shoulders in the shape of a cross. †

I forget the scientific name they call it. I dunno, I think it's kind of stupid to give one species of fox so many different scientific names depending on the color of it's fur.

ach so... interesting. i'd never heard of foxes with a special name for the pattern of fur over their backs.

There is such a thing as a grey fox - the red fox are dying off because of some kind of parasite. I am so amazed that he is standing still and staring at you like that - I mean, I know you're CUTE, but still ...

It is funny how some animals may seem cautious of humans they are still curious. When I was younger I saw a doe behind a cabin we were staying at and it just stared at me, I went over to check it out and my mom said "no don't approach it, because if there is a baby around more than likely there is a protective mommy around."
