Description not really my own photo - my husband shot this of a bobcat that came by to eat some meat he tossed when he was emptying the freezer of old food - he'd assumed a feral tomcat (housecat gone wild) we've been feeding would come eat it. unfortunately, there's a good chance this bobcat ate the tomcat instead, as the tom has completely disappeared ever since this guy appeared.

my husband said the bobcat was huge (for a bobcat), and completely unafraid. he ran into the house to get his camera, then returned and shot for about 20 minutes, getting closer and closer (though not TOO close), and the bobcat never left.

we've heard, but not seen, bobcats around the house before, and they have the strangest, most hair-raising shriek, somewhere between an eagle's cry and a baby's scream. really gets your adrenaline pumping!

yeah, well, it was a whoa moment for my husband too - we've mostly just heard these bobcats screaming their strange scream, but rarely seen them this close.

it was very big for a bobcat (they are normally kind of small - like a big house cat), so we think it was an adult male. but this was after many months of heavy winter, and my husband had cleaned out our freezer of old meat and thrown it next to the house for wild animals (we only thought of foxes!) to eat. we think the bobcat must have been very, very hungry.

i've always wanted to have a pet bobcat too... i met one at a gas station once - some people had stopped there, and took the cat out of their car for a walk - i asked if i could pet it - they said sure, she won't bite, but she won't really respond either. and they were right. she didn't even look at me. but the amazing thing was her muscles - she wasn't big, but she was so incredibly powerful feeling

I can understand the want for an exotic pet.. mayhap it be a wolf-dog... never thought of a bobcat before, but I've had pet cats around me for all my life.

Did the stray cat ever show up?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zasu In reply to kayceeus [2007-04-02 19:31:24 +0000 UTC]

not while my husband was still living up there in the mountains. he's moved down into our house in the city again the past month. if the feral cat came by again, there would be no one to see him. so we don't know

i'll put up a pic of the feral tom - he was most likely a cat from our local sheepherders, who have a ranch a few miles away that they occupy during the summer. when they come up, they bring a bunch of barn cats with them to keep mice away. when they leave in the fall, they catch as many of the cats and their kittens as they can, and bring them back down to their winter ranch.

but there are often toms, and sometimes females, that are just too wild and can't be caught.

i tamed a female a few years ago, though she could never be taught to use a litter box, so had to stay outside. she was pregnant when she arrived on our back porch in the dead of winter, and had her kittens in one of our sheds. as soon as we found homes for most of them, we spayed her and one of the kittens. but she and the kitten both disappeared over time - also possibly eaten by bobcats

Wow it must be pretty rural out there to have wild animals so close to the house, it sounds nice, a great place to get away from it all!

we're thinking of going up there this weekend for easter. the local community has an easter egg hunt every year in a sheep meadow. we just have to wash the sheep and elk manure off the eggs - no biggie

Ha ha if people could see all the chicken poop that's covering eggs before they're washed they'd probably never eat them! That sounds like a really good time, I love community events like that have a wonderful time!

They have always fascinated me. They're wild cats, but they look closer to our domestic cats (except for size) than any of the wild cats. This is truly amazing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zasu In reply to nutmeg-42 [2007-03-31 04:30:35 +0000 UTC]

i actually petted a pet bobcat once - we were stopped at a gas station, and some people took her out of their car for a little walk. i had chatted with them earlier, and they were friendly, so i asked if it would be possible to pet their bobcat. they said, "sure... she won't be upset, but she won't really notice you either."

and they were right. but the remarkable thing (to me), was how incredibly muscular and powerfully built she was - completely taut - not like any housecat, that's fer sure!

i asked them how they'd dealt with her using her claws on people when playing, and they said they'd taught her to draw her claws back in (which usually wild cats can't, or don't, do - only domestic cats do), by tapping on the pads of her claws whenever she started to scratch a person.

nutmeg-42 In reply to zasu [2007-03-31 06:24:29 +0000 UTC]

Wow, some more interesting info. Maybe they are more closely related to our domestic cats than we think.
