Description

One of the things that appeals to me most about Game of Thrones / Song of Ice and Fire is how realistic, complex and unnervingly human its characters are. I love the fact that whether you love or loathe them - or are just plainly confused as to whether you do one moment then don't the next - you can almost always empathise or understand them to some degree. I for one, couldn't stand Sansa Stark throughout series one, but as the series has moved on, and her character has grown and developed, she's gradually become one of my favourite characters and I think there's much more to come from her.

Petyr Baelish, however, is a character I've loved from the very beginning and still at the end of series four, he remains to be my favourite character in the entire series.

I suppose you could say I'm a "shipper" of these two. And I am! I could give many reasons as to why, but won't because I don't wish to say anything that would be regarded as a spoiler. Still, I've been looking forward to drawing them at the Eyrie ever since I read it. I think it's one of the most moving chapters / scenes throughout ASOIAF/GOT.

I agree with what you say about Sansa; when I first started reading the books and then watching the show I couldn't stand her and her attitude to life (to the point that I hated reading the chapters from her POV in the first book until the very latest chapters) but as her character has progressed I think has gotten much better. Littlefinger...I thin he's just so devious and cunning that you can't help but admire his character even if you don't want to! I'm not saying this as a spoiler (because I don't even know if it may possibly ever occur or not this is just my opinion) but I feel like Sansa may be Littlefinger's demise which would be epic since he believes himself to be teaching her in the way of playing the Game of Thrones and whatnot.

I really liked this drawing though like you different scenes to draw them- if that's true what made you pick those two scenes to reference from and why?

I was just the same. Reading chapters from her perspective with quite tedious (as with many of the characters initially, I have do admit) but as you say, she's definitely come a long way since then. I completely agree with you about Sansa leading Littlefinger to his ultimate demise. It might sound strange, as he's my favourite character, but I think that would be an incredibly interesting and gripping plot line, so I very much hope that's the case.

I just think the part at the Eeyrie, both in the books and in the TV series, though we all know that Littlefinger's intentions are far from honourable in any sense of the word, but seeing him helping her to construct Winterfell in the snow is something quite moving, from Sansa's perspective, at least. It signifies just how manipulative he can be. It's also a scene that really highlights just how far Sansa has come in terms of character, becoming appreciative and longing for what she once had, whereas before she couldn't wait to leave her home. It conveys just how much heartache and grief she's had to go through; how few people she can rely on or trust in the world, therefore is left with little choice but to seek or tolerate the one and only comfort someone as cunning as Littlefinger can almost exclusively provide. It's a deep and pivotal part of the plot, really.

Reading chapters from her was the worst for me...did I not like reading any of the others? hhmm...I think for others it was a case of me not liking characters' perspectives only at certain times- For example I like Jon's character and I can relate to being ostracised for something you can't control (I suppose I'm a bit like Tyrion: "I have a soft spot in my heart for cripples, broken things and bastards" ) but there were sometimes when he fixated on it just a bit too much and not because someone reminded him of it (thinking of it when Lady Stark is horrible to him? understandable. Just randomly? not so much) and he did have it better than many other bastards in Westeros (though spoiler alert it still bugs me that the one bastard whom ever gets accepted is Bolton's! out of all of them it's the psycho who gets accepted! really!?)

Very true, but I also think it captures the depth of the whole Game of Thrones universe in that often people who are enemies have to become allies, and allies can turn easily. A lot of Littlefinger's interactions with characters generally show him as an enemy to Starks and now Sansa must rely on him as an ally instead- it's quite powerful as well that essentially Littlefinger holds Sansa's whole being now, even her identity as Sansa Stark is a secretshe must rely on him to keep, whilst trusting him to help her forge a new one. It really is quite a complex bond (but what bond isn't in this series?)

Responding to this ridiculously late in the day ― I'm genuinely so sorry! It seems this message disappeared on my responses for some reason and I've only just re-found it whilst browsing through my older work. I hope everything's okay with you?

I think my issue with the books is there isn't much internal dialogue as you would expect. Don't get me wrong, I love GRRM for the world he's given us, but I find there's so much more emotion in the show, which is unusual. I love that quote from Tyrion. I related to it quite heavily when he first said it, and I still do, really. I have to admit Jon hasn't been one of my favourite characters. I don't know, he seemed a bit devoid of any real spark or personality for me, but in the previous two seasons he really grew on me, but Littlefinger and Roose I think are my overall favourites ― and undoubtedly two of the smartest characters in the series. Haha, yes! The bitter irony in Ramsay being legitimised, eh? Still, he might get the chop this series if the rumours are true. . .

I was going to say, yeah, what bond isn't essentially that complex in the series. It's amazing. I watched an interview with Michael McElhatton recently and he described it really well, like if LOTR is about good vs evil, GOT is about all of what's in between, and how all the connections are so interwoven and just become tighter and more complex with each passing series. He's right. That's what makes the show for me. The flawed and incredibly human characters.

That's alright as I found I had a similar problem  also doesn't help that life got very hectic!...so now I hope everything's ok with you?

I agree quite heavily with your point there which IS strange considering how much detail goes into the book and the world...but I find that the show and the books balance each other quite nicely in that aspect, but also the book gives you just enough information to let your imagination run wild to fill in the blanks with what you would imagine. In that way it's almost like everyone's reading a different story. I love that quote from Tyrion too! I've loved quite a few of his and relate to them heavily and I think that might be one of the reasons he's one of my favourite characters consistently (Other people overtime have grown on me- sansa and Jon, Jaime, etc) and it's interesting to see how each character will "play the game" (though thank GOD  (spoiler alert) Ramsay did finally kick the bucket and in a very interesting way too- I found it somewhat ironic that after the Hound nd Sansa's complex relationship...sansa then used actual hounds to kill Ramsay)

I truly haven't encountered a series like it, and I would agree with that analogy- LOTR is clearcut Good VS. Evil (I'm not a fan but even I can see that)...and Game Of Thrones is that AND everything in between! and it feels like in a way it makes everything that much deeper and feel more realistic despite the obvious fantasy base- because you really do feel that these characters are more human but you also can SEE how everything decision ripples out to potentially affect EVERYONE even if they're thousands of miles away.

Two of my favourite characters! I love this ship too, even though it gets a lot of hate. Love your drawing by the way!

Ah thanks so much! I'm glad you like it. I really like your artwork of the two of them by the way!!

Tis a shame it's not a very popular ship. But hey, that don't bother us, right? I actually think it's my favourite pairing in GOT, but then I always like the weird ones. What about you? You pair anyone else?

SmudgeThistle In reply to GalleyArts [2014-08-12 18:08:47 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you!

It is a shame! It is so juicy... And fascinating... It's probably my favourite pairing too. I also ship Jaime and Brienne! What about you?

GalleyArts In reply to SmudgeThistle [2014-08-21 15:56:00 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome   Haha, well, yeah juicy is definitely one word for it! I have a bit of a thing for older guy, younger women ships. I do think Sansa's gonna chew Littlefinger up and spit him out one day soon, though. It shall be fun to watch!

Same here! I ship Jamie and Brienne too, seconded behind Sansa and Petyr. Those two were fun to draw, as well! Ohhh I don't know who else . . . I used to be a fan of the Daenerys and Jorah thing, but not so much anymore. I suppose Arya and Jaqen too, but that'd need a few more years to develop, I think!

SmudgeThistle In reply to GalleyArts [2014-09-17 14:09:30 +0000 UTC]

As much as I ship it, yeah I agree, I do want Sansa to get the better of him in the end. Dany and Jorah... Poor Jorah... I just feel sad about that. Arya and Jaqen is another good one! I hope she finds him again. It could be very interesting...

GalleyArts In reply to SmudgeThistle [2014-09-27 12:16:11 +0000 UTC]

Me too. Definitely.

Yeah, poor Jorah - or Captain Friendzone as he's affectionately known as, these days.  I really hope she does, as well. Though, in the books - not sure if you've read them so I won't spoil it - but there is a character I suspect might be him with another identity. We shall see, I suppose

Sansa and Petyr, that's an interesting match. I do like Littlefinger even if he is a bit of a douche LOL! I also like Jaime, so what does that say about me? Him and Brienne together would make me a happy fangirl

Beautiful pencil work my dear!

Thank you Most people think it a bit strange, I think. Though, I don't think it's any stranger than the Sandor and Sansa pairing, to be fair. It says you've got great taste in characters! But I like the Boltons, so who am I to judge!   I like Jaime, too! Didn't used to, but he's grown on me. I ship him and Brienne in a big way. Can't get enough of those fan-made music videos on YouTube. Sadly, I think it's the nearest we'll get to an actual romance!

Thank you very much! I love your gallery, by the way! It's so varied.

I'll have to check out some of those Youtube fanvids! Any suggestions to watch? The Boltons eh? Ransay is pretty scary! I didn't like Jaime at first either, it wasn't until Brienne came in to the picture that you got to learn more about his true nature. I haven't read the books (waiting until he actually finishes writing them ) I really need to draw a Jaime or Brienne pic, or any GoT pic honestly Thank you for the gallery love! A lot of it is commission work, so that is probably where the vary comes from

Oh there's so many! It depends, really, whether you like the more emotive kind of videos, or the ones highlighting their opposition? There's a lot more than there used to be, but the latter of the two are older, with less recent clips. And same here. It was Brienne that completely changed my view of Jaime. I so love that about Game of Thrones!

I do, yeah! I like Ramsay's sheer and utter sadistic madness. I generally like villains more than protagonists for some reason.   His dad's something else, though. He's quite a complex cookie. One minute he's this soft-spoken gentleman, then he's this slippery, sinister, shady character. I love it.

Ahhh right. You'll prooobably have a long wait, then! I'm up to A Feast For Crows, but my mum's ahead of me! She's nearly finished all of them!

You're welcome! I see They're good! Don't you enjoy drawing for your own pleasure from time to time, though?

imtherealjenna In reply to GalleyArts [2014-06-27 02:03:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm kind of a dom, so any where Brienne is showing him up would be kind of hot, but then the emotion filled stuff is right up there as well! That scene where he collapses in the bath house and she saves him after he tells her the truth about the King Slayer bit sent me all swooning LOL! I'm a tard, don't mind me!

Ramsay! He IS! 0o Such a meanie! I actually felt bad for Theon even though after what he did, he kind of deserved his fate. You are a villain's fan as well! That is so awesome! XD I've always been a villain's girl over the hero unless the hero was an anti-hero type mostly because a flawed nature feels more human to me, that and I often fancy spanking them LOL! *blush*

I look forward to reading the books. Probably just as well I'm waiting as I still have another two years of school to get my 4 year degree in logistics management, and it leaves very little free time with having a 3yr old, a newborn, and an average of 10 to 12 hour work day 0o

Thank you! You are too kind! As for drawing for myself, I do, (the Jack Rackham pic that I drew was for myself as well as those True Blood pics) I used to draw a lot more, but time is always so limited these days :/ I find getting commissions or art trades gives me a reason to commit otherwise I'm all work, work, work... which makes a bit of a dull girl (Excluding running my D&D pirate campaign LOL! You can blame Black Sails for that inspiration *snerk*)

See what you make of this video. I quite like this one.

Women kicking mens arses is always something I enjoy, personally. I've always been a little tomboyish and overly competitive with males, hence my love of Brienne. I loved that scene, too. I'm not one for swooning very often, but I may have let a prolonged "awww" slip. Plus, you really see his perspective in that scene, and he's right.

I have no pity for Theon whatsoever. I found every torture scene highly amusing . . . I'm a sadist, can't help it.

I am indeed!! I don't know about spanking - though I saw you had a bit of a fetish on your page there I'm a little more in for medieval torture and interrogation, if I'm honest. I don't know why, but ever since I was a little girl I always gravitated towards the villains. Seriously, I cried when Scar died instead of Mufasa and when Beast turned into a prince at the end of Beauty and the Beast, I was devastated. I made my mum stop the tape before it happened. I'm literally obsessed with the warped, unusual and villainous. My drawing list is overflowing with "baddies". You got an all time favourite villain?

Wow . . . you sound run off your feet! I don't know how you manage to fit anything creative in!

I'm really not surprised time's limited. It's amazing you can multitask all that, and then take on commissions! Working doesn't make you dull, makes you committed! Pirate campaign? What is zis?

That is a nice video. I haven't had a lot of chance to check any out... I know, I suck

*evil grin* I'm all about F/m for sure Brienne is awesome in so many ways, as a young girl I fancied being a knight just like her LOL! XD It's a welcome change to have a female play the role that isn't a freaking twig and totally unbelievable in the role of a bad ass chick that had the ass to go toe to toe with a man like the Hound.

Theon is pretty messed up. Burning those kids was the worst thing he did The torture scenes weren't wholly bad, but cutting his dick off was a bit extreme. 0o It was rather interesting in the progression of his tortures.

LOL! Spanking not for you eh? I latched on to spanking since it's 10% physical and 90% emotional for me and encompassed my need for discipline and nurturing... I'm an odd bird

I hated seeing Scar die as well Disney always pissed me off in the way most all their characters are black and white. I usually have a pension for certain villains that tend to have layers to explore and usually some vulnerability I can sense like a shark senses blood in the water LOL! An all time favorite villain... that is hard to say, I go through phases and also have lists If I had to pick, probably Loki from the Marvel comics. Loki was a long time favorite and has the most fanfics written about him on my author page... otherwise known as the page of abuse! LOL!: www.fanfiction.net/u/1309081/ (in case you're interested ) What about you?

Fitting in anything creative can be super difficult. I'm taking advantage of my maternity leave now

My pirate campaign is a dungeon and dragons campaign I'm running based in the 1700's (end of the pirate era) where the players are pirates and I'm taking them on a journey starting in Nassau where the royal navy has shown up to reinstate marshal law, they escaped the island to be beset by a hurricane depositing them to an uncharted island. They've boarded the island to find a ship wrecked on the rocks with no bodies. They set off in to the jungle and see a campfire in the distance (that's where they left off.... we will have game again this coming Wed night, where I plan to open up some more hopefully fun adventure to play. )

You don't suck! At least you know about them for future reference! You're just a little too busy for such leisurely activities at the minute!

Oh really?! Brilliant Me too, oddly enough! I was a complete tomboy as a little girl. Swords, archery . . . I was obsessed with Zelda and folkloric / mythological / medieval tales (still am, to be honest) It definitely is, I agree. I mean, I know some of the world's greatest black belts are tiny Asian women and all credit to them, but for pure brute strength it's certainly more fitting in this instance. I admire the effort Gwen put into just getting the part, too, putting on all that muscle and doing all that training.

I'd never really warmed to Theon's personality before that, but I think doing what he did was a lot to do with the pressure he placed on himself since going back to Pyke. The lengths people will go to for sibling rivalry, I tell you. Nah, they weren't too bad at all - but this is coming from a complete horror buff who searches for every banned and controversial film under the sun - but I have to admit the whole seduction scene prior, then the sausage part afterwards was just hilarious. That little wiggle Ramsay did of that sausage had me cackling like an old hen.

Nah, you're not odd at all. We all have our "things." I'm not short on my weird fetishes, but I do see the attraction to it. I have read before many people say it's the emotional aspect. I'm not one to judge in that regard!

Same here!! I tend to just hone in on their vulnerabilities. I find I can identify with them far more than the protagonists, too. I think a part of me see's them all as hurt and rejected children, afraid of humiliation and being outwitted. You know, I'm aware Loki has this huge fan base (Hiddleston, too) There's scarcely a page I come across on here that doesn't have some Loki fan art tucked away somewhere. I know him from Norse mythology, of course, but I've never read the comics or seen the Thor films. I think I need to put it on my "to-do" list, just to see what the fuss is all about. I'd love to read your fan fiction once I do! I shall bookmark it!

Ohhh that's such a tough call. There's so many villains I love. Rutger Hauer as the Hitcher is pretty high up on the list, but Michael Emerson as William Hinks in The Practice has to take the number one spot. Sadly, so few people have seen that performance

You do! Make the most of it and milk it, dear!

Oh how interesting!! That sounds amazing! What great fun that must be!

Sweet! I’ve always loved all things medieval like that as well! Nice to meet another girl that doesn’t think me a weirdo for feeling that way! I didn’t know she’d gone through a lot of training and weight gain for the part. She looks really good, and playing that role has got to be really fun.

It was truly torturous for sure! LOL! It was well thought out by Ramsay for sure As for Theon, I almost feel sorry for him now since he’s totally broken… some serious Stockholm syndrome! 0o

It’s crazy how many people fell head over heels for Loki after Tom played him LOL! Norse mythology is a neat look at gods, I’m a big fan for mythology overall and often wonder if people in the far future will look at the gods people worship now and think of them in the same manner.
