Ohhh so you had more than one go at it, then? I had no idea! But yeah, they are! Necessary, though, if you want to attain some kind of depth, or so I've found, anyway.

Yeah, the first one my measurements for Ramsay's head were off, and I'd tried to use the 8B with his hair, but didn't realize how crappy it blended, so I trashed it and started anew. This one is a lot better with 5B & 6B
Maybe after more practice with the darker pencils I'll master it's usage, although I was thinking of shaving it and just attempting to blend the graphite in to see what that does

Ahh yeah, I've found 8B to be kind of grainy if you don't use something like a 2B or 4B beneath it, or a 6B like you say.
I used to have a huge fear of going too dark - I mean, you don't want to get so far and ruin a drawing you've spent hours on already - but I'm glad I threw caution to the wind one day and just went for it.

It definitely does. There's nothing worse than a flat picture, but I agree going too dark is certainly something we all dread and have experienced before!

That's what happened with my first Theon/Ramsay. I realized I'd brought his hairline over too far, and by then there was no going back :/
