Description NAME: Haliaeetus leucocephalus
COMMON NAME: Bald Eagle
IUCN REDLIST: Least Concern (2008)
LOCATION: Feral (not wild, not domesticated, but kept as 'pet' RDS, Dublin
WHEN: October 18, 2008
CAMERA: Canon EOS 400D
LENS: Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6
APERTURE: f/5
SPEED: 1/60
FLASH: yes - inbuilt

This species is native to Canada, North America and Mexico. Threats to this species are mainly due to hunting, poison (usually unintentional; such as poisons, e.g. DDT, for ingestion by rodents to kill off those 'pests' - ingested inturn by these birds leads them to be also poisoned). It had been an endangered species locally in North America (still thriving in Canada) but since 1995, it's population has recovered and stabilised again, going through a threatened status, to finally, a least concern status. (the bird photographed is very much alive and healthy - not a stuffed one)

Haha, yeah, around October/November they have a pet show. It's mostly dogs and cats, but there's a few reptiles and birds of prey.

I really like this shot of the bald eagle I have a question... would it be alright if I use this in a digital realistic drawing? If not, thats perfectly fine, Im trying to find a good picture ref for drawing an elegant bird such as this.

Thank you!! I've barely been on this site much at all the last few months, so sorry about the lack of comments or anything! Still a bunch of your devs still waiting (and piling up) in my deviation box. I've been so busy with my final year project!

No worries about the comments or lack of same. People come and go in their own time and do their own thing as far as I'm concerned. You could delete all my deviations from your inbox and it wouldn't bother me, I know what its like to fall behind on my inbox. What's the project about? I hope its going well for you.

It's about Pterosaurs. Trying to figure out their taphonomy (the way they decay and become fossilized) by comparing a bunch of fossils from the same region (from the Solnhofen in Germany) - this way there shouldn't be much disturbance/variation in the way they all became fossilized. So differences should be in the way they decay (and eventually fall apart). This hopefully will be different in the different species (I'm looking at two, one from each of the two main branches of pterosaur evolution - the early pterosaur and the late pterosaur). This will then indicate the difference in how they're made up....for example, the wing would be expected to fall off first, before the leg, due to its loose joint to the shoulder (needed for flapping flight). Maybe it's looser in one species than another, being found more part than together in one species compared to another, meaning more rigorous flapping flight...

It's interesting! I love it!!

NO! He's actually healthy and alive! He's a trained bird, so was just staying on the falconer's hand, so it was quite easy to get photos of!
