NAME:
Leptophis ahaetulla
COMMON NAME: Parrot Snake
IUCN REDLIST: Least Concern (2008)
LOCATION: Wild, in natural environment. El Cusuco National Park.

Found throughout Central and South America, this snake feeds on small frogs, rodents and birds. It's not highly venomous, but a bite may cause a rash or swelling in some people, but it's not fatal. Snakes generally bite humans in self-defense, but this is often a last resort as venom is metabolically costly, they don't want to waste it on anything else other than feeding - if you get far too close, or won't leave them alone despite warnings. Just as rattlesnakes will rattle their tails to let you know you're getting to close and to back off and that you're pissing it off, the parrot snake gapes it's mouth wide like this. It is quite distinctive of the parrot snake to have a wide, sub-triangular gaping mouth, with all white inside.

Photographed on a trip with the Honduras dept. of Operation Wallacea biodiversity monitoring and conservation group.

That's not the usual reaction of snakes being defensive and threatening, lol do you like snakes too?

That's pretty cool alright, it'd be even more awesome though to see it facing the camera more though - ya know, to get flared chest from a front view! They're pretty fast so that was quite a lucky shot to get!! Well done!

What a shot! That snake looks like its striking soo quickly!! How did you manage to get a shot this great?? With no blur at all? Hey, is this what they call macro photography?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emma-Lawlor In reply to AzulaWolfie [2012-01-16 09:46:31 +0000 UTC]

A fast shutter speed meant I could avoid the blur. Clicking the button at the right moment - now that's a trickier thing to do!

This isn't actually macro photography - macro photography would have something lik eonly the head and not the body - it's like an extreme close-up. This would be an example of macro [link] (not mine unfortunately). My photo here if the snake is actually just a close-up, somewhat.
