Description And thus the reason I have been away so long....
I have been working on this since October and it has been the most detailed, time-consuming piece I have ever completed.

I know it might not look like much but it is actually a big drawing. About 14" by 10". In colored pencils it takes a long time. ^^

I actually did this basically to broaden my portfolio for college. I wanted to have something else in my gallery that was not directly draw/painted from a photo. Plus, I love conceptual art that makes you think or question the intent of the artist. I hope this is one of those pieces.

The feeling I tried to convey was to break out of the binds of the technological world. It was originally supposed to be a hopeful message of returning to nature and breaking free of technology but I have talked to a few people and they saw a darker message of littering nature with our technological waste and the frightening fact that we will continue to do so. I guess the interpretation is up to you.

I love to hear some interpretations or critiques.

Here are the WIP's

Incredible.. I applaud your patience with color pencils! I always get so frustrated with this medium

As to the interpretation, what first struck me was the lush green canopy, and I didn't notice the grim scene at the bottom until later. In this order, it seems like a pessimistic view of how technology is encroaching on nature, but the girl who's trying to escape also present your own view

Good job!

Wow, thank you so much for the incredible comment! I was always afraid to use colored pencils because it is a difficult medium, but I actually ended up really loving it.

It definitely has a somewhat pessimistic aura. I wanted nature to be the real eye candy and organic beauty. Sometime we get a little infatuated by the elegance of new technology. I'm surely guilty of that.
Thank you again for really taking the time to look at this piece. I appreciate every word.

I think I need to rediscover color pencils! I've neglected mine for a long time already

Yes, and part of that is marketing and our dependence on technology, I guess! However it feels nice to get away from the computers and social media every once in a while

You're very welcome

This is so amazing! And with colour pencils? Wow, that must have taken a lot of work!
The light and the shading is beautiful, and those trees! I can't draw leaves. Or, I suppose I CAN, but I'm never happy with the result. -.-
I can't seem to find anything I want to say that hasn't already been said...
I loved the message that the picture had, and I think it has a darker side too, 'cause the technology is stick her in those cables, so that it seems like she can't get away from them, even though she's seeing that beautiful forest and want to go there, maybe she can't.
... um, did you understand my confusing - and extremely long - sentence?

ANYWAY, the picture is great!

Calmality In reply to Wolfpackwithme [2010-05-06 01:11:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment! You really made my day, thank you!
I have always had trouble with leaves too so I looked at some ways other artists drew them and basically I saw that you can draw each leaf individually or make them into spiky shapes with various colors. So that is what I chose.

I was waiting for someone to say that this picture had a darker side too it because the more I look at it, the more I see that. Just like you said, she seems pulled back to technology even when she is trying to get out. I think most of us can relate...I easily get fixated on the glow of my computer, cell phones, mp3, etc. It would be nice to get away from it once in a while. ^^
Well, thank you again for taking the time to comment and give an insightful interpretation. You are just too sweet!

Wolfpackwithme In reply to Calmality [2010-05-06 01:46:36 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!
Yeah, I suppose that's the easiest way I often draw big trees and/or forests, that's why I almost always give up for a couple of months in the middle of a picture... XD I use to colour them with different colors too! I think they look more realistic than if one paint the whole forest with the same color.

Yeah, me too. I want to get out more often now that we have may, and warm, but my computer kind of... holds me.
Yes, it would be nice! ^^ When I get vacation I hope I can get out more. Or, I probably will, because we will for example go to my uncle who lives at a farm, so it will be pointless to take a computer there!

Anyway: Thank you, and you're very very welcome!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Calmality In reply to Wolfpackwithme [2010-05-08 15:06:00 +0000 UTC]

I gave up too on this picture so many times. I was on hiatus for about a month and then various other times. The forest is always a tricky part because you have to capture depth and such intricate detail. I would change a few things if I could do it again.

Now that it's warm, I really have to get outside more. A vacation is definitely something I need. We actually have one in july with my extended family and there is no internet where we stay, but now there are about 10 people who have iphones. It just never ends
A farm would be a perfect getaway. If you do take a vacation there, I hope you have fun!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfpackwithme In reply to Calmality [2010-05-08 18:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Lucky you didn't!
Yeah, and even if I just draw one tree I still have to get details! And the bark... -.- Sometimes I go crazy into details, and sit for reeeeaaaally long and draw, like, insects and... rocks.

No, it don't seem like it ends . I, for one, always carry my mobile phone and my camera with me. My sister often has a Nintendo DS, or her phone. Mum and dad have their phones too... Ugh!
I hope so too! It's very likely that we will, 'cause we're savin money to a vacation in Chile next winter (not this year's winter, but the next), so probably we will drive the car there (to the farm I mean ) or just stay home all summer. That would be fun too. Maybe not exiting, but then we would still have or technology... Gah! It's everywhere!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Calmality In reply to Wolfpackwithme [2010-05-11 02:56:53 +0000 UTC]

I go crazy with detail too! I drive my teacher nuts, but I am never really satisfied with the result until I have all the detail and trimmings that I want. The rocks took a while too...I may have gone a little overboard on this piece but in the end I think it was worth the time. I guess we have that habit in common.

I carry my phone too although I am more of an ipod person. I can't go in the car without music. My brother has his DS too or we share my PSP. It is pathetic all the things we need to stay amused some times.

Chile would be so fun! It is absolutely gorgeous down there. Although, they had some catastrophes this year so I really hope they can recover well. But that is so exciting! I hope you enjoy it. I usually stay home during the summer or go to the next state over. It's fine with me though, I have fun regardless.
And yes, the technology still follows me everywhere too XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfpackwithme In reply to Calmality [2010-05-11 22:50:44 +0000 UTC]

No, me neither. I want it to be perfect, even though I know that that's not possible. -.- I tend to have a great picture in my head of how I want the picture to turn out, and when it doesn't seem to get nearly as good, I sometimes gets mad at the picture and scribble over the whole paper Or just use my eraser. Sigh.
Yes, it was totally worth it! They look awesome! Your rocks I mean. The rocks rocks

Yeah, I suppose most people do. I wish I had an ipod, but at the same time I don't. Yup, we use to have 7 CD's with us in the car, and then my sister and I listen non-stop on one of them. Last summer we listened to Britney Spear's 'Circus'. My sister is crazy about that one.
I know! Isn't it weird that even though we're outside and could do lots of stuff we often just sit and sulk until we can get our things again. -.-

Yes, we are really excited, even though it means that we can't go anywhere this summer. I mean, we can drive our car to our Uncle's farm of course, or to Denmark (there's an amusement park there with a rollercoaster that my sister and I found hilarious.) possibly, but not somewhere far. But the Chile travelling is so worth it!
Oh, have you been there?
Yes, our grandmother and grandfather was down there October-April and it was really worrying to hear about this earthquake that was now, even though they wasn't that close to it.

It's like it's planning on taking over the world! ... Oh wait. It already has. XD

(Oh my God, this was one loooong reply. Hope you don't mind. )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Calmality In reply to Wolfpackwithme [2010-05-12 02:31:28 +0000 UTC]

It is the curse of the artist...to try to make everything look as perfect as our minds can imagine. Most people never even come close. XD And then, as a result, there is never any real satisfaction from finishing a piece. It only lasts so long. But I find when I put a lot of detail in it, I tend to grow from it and appreciate it longer.

I had CD's just like that not too long ago! I decided I had to buy myself an ipod because I couldn't keep track of my music anymore. It is a really nice thing to have and I have never regretted my purchase because I use it so much, but I am a music junkie. I know other people who would way rather have a cell phone.
I have Britney Spears too! It takes me back to my younger years. I had her first album back then. She may be crazy at times, but her music is so addicting.

I would be so excited too and the sacrifice seems worth it. You will appreciate it so much come next summer. Little road trips are fun too and they can make up for the big trips anyway. I have more fun spending time with extended family most of the time anyway. Thankfully they live close. ^.^
An amusement park is always fun! I used to love them so much but now I can't handle many rides. Rollercoasters scare me! I give a lot of credit to anyone willing to go on them but I enjoy watching and just being there anyway.
I have not been to Chile, but I would love to go and see it. I actually have never been outside the U.S....It's kinda sad.
Your grandparents were down there during the earthquake then?! That must have been terrifying. I saw the footage from there and it looked to devastating. I know that they have made progress and I know much of it is still gorgeous.

I never mind long replies, Don't worry! Although, I am going to apologize for this one...I got carried away.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfpackwithme In reply to Calmality [2010-05-17 15:07:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it gets easier then. Though if I'm really hopeless at drawing something, I practice. If it's something normal, I wouldn't practice on drawing... I don't know... needles. Yeah, needles. I mean, if I draw needles, I'll probably just draw a line.

Anyway, yeah, I have a cell phone (like I said ) but I really really really want to have an iphone or a mp3-player or something, because I want so many songs! But right now I can't get one, because my mum is studying on a... well I don't know what it's named in english. Anyway, she's studying there, and working as usual half the time, so therefor, she doesn't get as much money anymore. We're saving for that Chile vacation too, so...

Yup, they are! And now mum came up with the idea of driving the car to Γ–land (an island in Sweden) where we're going to stay for a week. We haven't decided yet, but we maybe will. And all that bicycling (is that the name of driving a bike?? o.O) to DjulΓΆ (that lake near us)... ah, I love that! It's really beautiful there, and the water is great. My family has a spot that is 'ours' where we usually sit in the grass. Though we mostly bath.
Yes, being with the big family with cousins, Aunts, Uncles and such, are great!

They do? Well, that's fun too. And there's a lot more on amusement parks, so even if onbe doesn't like rollercoasters, one can do a lot of other things. Like... ferris wheels. Usually they go a lot slower than rollercoasters, right? At least the ones here does...
(A lot of here!)
Well... U.S is big. There's that at least And I haven't been in that many countries either. It's Sweden (that I live in ), Γ…land and Denmark. Oh, and Mallorca. I was in Γ…land and Mallorca for one week each, and then Denmark, like... two days.

Yes, it was. We were really scared here, and looked on the news all the time, and called our grandparents so that we would know they were save. Tata (my grandfather ) didn't want to get home when the earthquake was going on, because he didn't thought that he would be alive to go to Chile next year again, so he wanted to stay as long as possible. At last they went home, 'cause he and Abuela (grandmother) both cathced colds.
Yes, I know, didn't it look horrible? But, yes, it's still a beautiful land - or my dad says so anyway.

No problem, it was fun replying. Sorry for not answering first though. I have had a lot of homework, so I could just reply short messages like "Thanks for the fav/llama" and "You're welcome" and such. -.-
Um... yes, I got a bit carried away too, as you can see. But it's fun to write!

I can understand why you would be saving money for a trip over an ipod, it makes totally sense, I would too. They can get too pricey. I had to save up for a long time to get mine. Well, for future reference, they are very useful and I would personally recommend one.

Staying on an island would be amazing! That is a wonderful vacation! I wish we had an island near us...we kinda live in the middle of the country
bicycling is the word and it sounds like so much fun. I would love to go just to see the sight. A touring bike ride would be wonderful. I hope you have fun with your cousins and family on whatever vacation. Both places sound so lovely, I'm jealous.

I do go on ferris wheels sometimes, I can definitely handle those. I love rides that spin but not any that drop....I guess I just have more of a tolerance for spinning ones. XD
I always wanted to go to Denmark. I have seen films and pictures from there and it just looks beautiful. Plus, I don't know why exactly, but the atmosphere always looked friendly to me...maybe that's just feeling. ^^

I would be worried sick if my grandparents or any family members were down there during the earthquake. It is amazing that they wanted to stay so long, but I can understand. I bet they love it there a lot. But getting sick on top of everything must be awful. Still, I would love to visit. It still looks gorgeous to me.

I know what you mean, I am swamped with homework but I will be out of school in two days so the work load will go down. I want to spend much more time on DA!
