Description my recent summer project is officially done!

For fairytale contest:

Lilith is a mythological female Mesopotamian storm demon associated with wind and was thought to be a bearer of disease, illness, and death. The figure of Lilith first appeared in a class of wind and storm demons or spirits as Lilitu, in Sumer, 4000 BC. Many scholars place the origin of the name "Lilith" at somewhere around 700 BC despite post-dating even to the time of Moses. In later folklore, "Lilith" is the name for Adam's first wife.

Lilith is described as a beautiful woman, who transforms into a blue, butterfly-like demon, and it is associated with the power of seduction. Lilith is the seductress of the material world, and all of its pleasures, and can lead to materialism unbalanced by the spirituality of the higher spheres. This ultimately leads to a descent into animal consciousness.

I had this idea after I read about the ancient goddess Lilith. She has been written and seen as an evil female demon for centuries but her original biblical description was actually a heavenly protector of nature and all animal life. Lilith is seen as a guardian for all animals and sees their innocent souls into the afterlife. I wanted to show the fairytale of Lilith as it was originally told, as a beautiful fairy queen. Hope I did it justice!

i love this! the way you painted the tree is wonderful! i like the symbolism you used and how you wanted to portray her as beautiful, not a demon. I think the darkness of the pic is a subtle way to show the dark side of her story too ^^ awesome job <333

Thank you so much for such an incredibly sweet comment and I am so happy that you found symbolism in it. I wanted to portray her as the beautiful creature she is but still relay that dark side people have been confusing with her for centuries. You understood it perfectly! Thank you again, it means so much to me

A very expressive tree. There's odd calmness to the painting, sweeping all the threatening and, so I imagine here, biased herstories of Lilith away.

You have an enjoyable gallery. A great deal of vision and promise.

thank you for such an expressive and inspiring comment! I am glad you picked up on the calmness of the atmosphere because I really wanted to capture a new vision of Lilith. I love hearing about old legends and stories so this was an enjoyable painting for me because I love Lilith's history.

Thank you for taking a look at my gallery. I have never had someone tell me my artwork has a vision of promise and I really appreciate those kind words. Thank you!

You've managed to steer your work clearly away from the dA mainstream - just write "Lilith" in the dA search and see how people imagine her. Series of Christian-fantastic depictions of sin and guilt. This one's refreshing.

I genuinely think that you've got good eye for movement and balance, and also a very nice way of thinking through the line when you draw.

Calmality In reply to Iohannis [2010-01-12 01:24:36 +0000 UTC]

I actually have searched "Lilith" before and you are completely correct, it seems artists love to portray her as the evil creature that she has come to be after so many years. I wanted to do something a little more true to her original legend.

I am so glad you like the balance in my paintings/drawings. You are too gracious, thank you!

I don't know about the originalities of any old legends. History and language are twisted things. But I do think that Lilith as a figure, and as a deposit of overlapping stories about freedom and the kind of interpersonality that is not mediated by society, has been disreputed or forgotten. There is some sad beauty to that too.

That these kinds of things change and keep being forgotten is no great wonder. People have brief lives compared to the sociocultural and inter-generational continuity that they insist on simulating with them.

Calmality In reply to Iohannis [2010-01-15 03:27:08 +0000 UTC]

stories and legends like Lilith's are twisted throughout history. So many people telling and writing the story are bound to make some changes. It is unfortunate when the legends turn from something beautiful and angelic into a more evil perplexity.
I like learning about the origins of these stories. There is always more truth and inspiration in the original.
