Description This is the biggest picture I have done in a dry medium. about 10.5 by 16 inches. I had this idea for a picture ever since I saw this photo: [link] by

It is such a cool concept and I wanted to explore it. ^.^
unfortunately, I did not have time to do this drawing in the summer and after school started I figured that I would have to save it for later, but then I took a trip to a sort of art exhibit with a neighbor/close friend to our family who has always enthusiastically supported my artwork. The exhibit allows people to rent artwork from artists around the country and you get the keep the artwork for six months.

Well, I soon found out that this is very expensive but my neighbor desperately wanted to get a painting that was inspirational to her and reminded her, at the same time, of the fall season. Both her parents past away over the summer (as well as her uncle) and she's been having a rough time so we looked around for a while until i decided that I should just make her a picture. (the ones there weren't that great anyway ) So i did! And she was completely thrilled. It took me a week and she cried when I gave it to her and said it was better than anything she could have ever imagined and has a symbolic meaning to her already.
sorry for the long story, i just thought you should know why i made it.

So this picture no longer belongs to me but I wanted to get a picture in before I completely give it up.

The Title inspired by another song, In This Life by Delta Goodrem. I was racking my brain trying to think of a title and this song started playing on my itunes and i had an epiphany. XD It fits so well, especially for the person I am giving it to. So go listen to it!

Hope you enjoy! Critiques are always appreciated too ^^

this is... beautiful.
your gallery has made me decide to do pencil work as my final picture for my VCE (high school system thing in Australia).
i keep forgetting how vivid pencil works can be.

btw, i wasn't aware delta goodrem was known all that much in the US...

I am so glad I have inspired someone else!! I wish you the best of luck on your final picture. It is truly an expressive and vivid medium and you can capture so much color detail.

I heard of Delta through someone else actually and some of her songs are more popular than others but I love her work and insightful song lyrics. I hope she becomes more famous here ^^

It's amazing! The shading are great, and the colors pop out against the grey as a nice effect. I suppose that's kind of what you were looking for?
It looks like she's hesitant to walk on those stones, but either she really really wants to, or she HAS to go there by some reason - hunted by something, etc.
Overall, it's a wonderful picture! Just like !SoulPeaceEiko said, you must be one of my favorite artists here on dA!

Calmality In reply to Wolfpackwithme [2010-05-11 02:51:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!! I wanted the color to be the main focus, like she is stepping into color out of a sort of depression or greyness.
I wanted her to be hesitant too but I have never heard it seems as though she is being chased. It is so symbolic, I love it! like she is being forced out of this gray and sad world into something brighter but she's doesn't know if she wants to leave it maybe because what she is used to is comforting. I can relate to that. ^^

I am so sorry for the late reply, this is a busy time of year for me but never think that I do not appreciate comments, they are always appreciated.
You are too kind really, I am blushing. It is so good to hear that I am one of your favorite artists, I couldn't ask for more than that.

Wolfpackwithme In reply to Calmality [2010-05-11 22:27:37 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Yes, it seems like that (that she's stepping into color from the depression/grey), and well yeah, about the comforting thing, that settles in good too. I mean, if she was used to be comforted and everything being calm and/or quite the same all the time, then she probably would feel hesitant to step into the colorful, noisy world again. Did you get those sentences? I think they were very confusing myself, but I'm pretty tired so...

Aw, don't worry. I have a busy year too, but soon we all have vacation...
Well, you are really good! You draw great pictures, and the fact that it's not digital painting makes them even more amazing!

Calmality In reply to Wolfpackwithme [2010-05-12 02:19:18 +0000 UTC]

I can see that too and how we all stay in our comfort zone even when its depressing and know that there is probably a better life waiting for us. What is familiar is homely I guess. It's sad, but people need to come out of that bubble they live in. I got your point, don't worry I write insanely like that too...way too many trains of thought going on.

Thank you, as always, for your support! It is amazing to have someone like you commenting

Wolfpackwithme In reply to Calmality [2010-05-17 14:30:31 +0000 UTC]

So true. If I come to a place often, it seems very homely to me, just because of that. If we get used to something, it gets so...normal, I guess, that we don't want to start over with something new.
Aw, you're welcome! And thanks.

I love the gray textures butted against the color... and the figure is very effective, but modern feeling (I think because of the hoodie) which pushes against a general "Brothers Grim" I get from the setting...

thank you! I am glad you liked the colors. I wanted a modern feeling, something more refreshing for the people of my generation.
I have never heard it compared to "Brothers Grim" but that is a very interesting comparison. I can see where you are coming from, thank you!

I love this work!
i like how you kept the photographic quality in the drawing
and the color use seems very clever
its has a mystic feeling to it.
Its interesting how the background of the rocks losses the texture of the rocks and becomes something soft and wavy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Calmality In reply to NiKaF [2009-12-19 22:47:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for such a detailed and lovely comment!
i wanted to keep the photographic nature of it without losing the fantasy aspect.
the rocks actually weren't planned to end up so smooth, they just kinda came out like that subconsciously. ^.^
I do like the affect too, like the rocks become more relaxed.
thank you so much for noticing such detail, it is really a pleasure
