Description I started this back in march for a friend's birthday (which was in April) but I got too caught up in school to finish in time. We just officially celebrated her birthday yesterday so I decided to finish it...4 months late

She really loved my [Ganges Ni Akai Bara ] piece so I thought I would give her one similar.

Full credit for the original photo goes to *slumberdoll for her photo Alice [link]
If you haven't seen her work go view it! She is one of the most amazing photographers on DA.

Great. I love the detail in this. I have never tried using charcoal but heard it's quite difficult to handle... makes this all the more impressive.

Charcoal does take a little while to get used too. It can be almost as messy as a wet medium but now they make pencils which contain the mess. I love them because you can get such dark shades. Thank you for your encouraging comment, I really appreciate the support!

You are so kind! Thank you for such a great comment, it means so much. I'm not a very patient person actually that's why it takes so long for me to draw one, I get too frustrated Thanks again!

Very amazingly well done, the details and the amount of attention it grabs is beyond noral anymore and it shows once more how good of an artist you are to be able to make someone look at a picture this much.
This is really well done and I really love the card theme, I'm not to much of a wonderland or alice fan but I love the card theme that goes on in that movie as well.
The leaves and everything is jsut amazing. super well done.

Calmality In reply to CatiProjectC [2010-07-30 00:34:27 +0000 UTC]

awwwww! You never fail to make me blush! Thank you for such a thoughtful comment, you always give the greatest compliments.
I'm not a big Alice and Wonderland fan either actually but I didn't even notice it was in that theme until I started drawing it. I just picked it because I thought my friend would like the style. the cards are my favorite part of the photo and its such a shame I couldn't have spent more time on them. I was rushed so much finishing so my greatest regret was not drawing the Queen properly but I guess its all behind me.
Thank you again, I always love hearing from you!

I honestly thought this was a black and white picture.
It is completely absolutely amazingly mind-boggling what you can do with just black and white, the message of the piece is totally clear despite lack of color...

I envy your ability to actually create detail through charcoal since that is something I have never been able to accomplish

Wonderful work

Calmality In reply to Kettlehead [2010-07-27 23:02:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so very much! Your comments always make me smile and it is so much of a compliment to hear that my drawings can look like photos. (I am not a very good photographer so if you ever see a photograph that resembles photos from slumberdoll posted by me, you can assume that someone hacked into my account ) Charcoal just takes practice and a REALLY good sharpener. XD
Thank you again for being so generous, you're the best!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kettlehead In reply to Calmality [2010-08-05 03:36:27 +0000 UTC]

No problem, and c'mon, you have the Artistic Eye. You can't be that bad a photographer!
But just in case if I see a photo I will be ready with a heavy wooden mallet

Oh, you can sharpen charcoal?
With a knife...Hmmm, I wasn't aware that charcoalists(?) regularly did that.
I tried it once with a pencil sharpener and it didn't work.( ) It works on crayons, though. ( )

No biggie, you deserve more praise than I could give you for what you do.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Calmality In reply to Kettlehead [2010-08-10 00:50:11 +0000 UTC]

I suppose if I had enough photography resources I could give it a shot but you better keep the mallet just in case

You usually use a knife to sharpen the sticks of charcoal (which I have never used) I have many rectangular sticks of the stuff but it is so messy I never try. I use the charcoal pencils which sharpen just like normal pencils except the charcoal turns to dust when you sharpen it so its still messy anyway XD
Crayons are always fun! There's another medium I should try again! It makes me feel like a little kid when I use them ^^

Kettlehead In reply to Calmality [2010-08-29 16:06:00 +0000 UTC]

Yup. I got you. And that's true, photography needs a lot of expensive equipment...hmm.

Charcoal pencils! INGENIOUS!
I never thought of it...I really should try that.

I know! I think they have crayon pencils now, I had a set of them (think I lost them...)

Despite the lack of spectrum of colour, this piece is, nevertheless, very vivid. Beside, the details are beautifully haunting...

Calmality In reply to RabbitL [2010-07-27 22:01:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! I know it is lacking color, when I was shading everything it felt like I was getting no where. When I finally stepped back and looked at it, the detail came together. Thank you for such a great comment, it means a lot! ^^

this is fantastic. you're amazing with details and you know exactly what the background should be (background's my only weakness).
you just totally know how to fill up the space in a portrait with just anything!
I really really love this!
