8x10 Colored Pencil on Canvas

Black paper doesn't work well for me so I decided to use something that I'm comfortable withβ€”canvas. The background is tinted with black acrylic which gives me a deeper and richer tone than colored pastel paper and I don't have to worry about them fading. While canvas is rather unconventional for CP use, I find them much easier to work with.

Thank you very much
I like working on textured surface and make it an integral part of my works, it helps me in limiting myself from overdoing things, I don't like my art to look too much like a photo.

I'm a newbie myself, started with CP just a year ago and a self-taught artist as well. Art is just a hobby for now, but there are some commissions that come from time to time. I'm sort of in-between right now, I can't work in a loose manner but I don't want my art to be hyper-realistic either, I guess my style for now is a good compromise.

Your works are pretty impressive, I've known quite a few self-taught artists here on DA and their works surpassed that of the educated ones IMHO. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the compliment Kathi
I think it's something to do with how I work with colored pencils, I don't treat them as such.
But in all honesty, I can't beat your CP portraits, your Jared Leto is awesome!

Some great artist said that values are more important than colors and the eye tends to lean more on those with striking contrast of light and shadows. I try to incorporate that in my works.

Excellent method. So did the coloured pencil apply easily over the acrylic; or did you leave the canvas bare for the pencil-work area? I've tried pencil over ink, which is tricky at the best of times; and over oils, which it doesn't cling to at all. So this acrylic method is very appealing.

bleuie In reply to theperian [2012-02-20 03:31:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I painted the background first and left out the image area but the table is done over the black acrylic. I use Liquitex Basics Matt Acrylic which behaves more like a gouache and have ample tooth for the CP to cling on but it will only accept quite a few layers. I wanted to try Colourfix Primer [link] which is used for pastel but, unfortunately, it isn't available here, some artists said that it works great with CP.

Before I read the description, I would have thought this a painting. I really like the way that the texture of the canvas remains after pencil scrubbing. Did you do this with the Van Goghs or Prismas, or with something else?
