8x10 Colored Pencil on Canvas

Black paper doesn't work well for me so I decided to use something that I'm comfortable withβ€”canvas. The background is tinted with black acrylic which gives me a deeper and richer tone than colored pastel paper and I don't have to worry about them fading. While canvas is rather unconventional for CP use, I find them much easier to work with.

Thank you.

Black paper has been my CP Waterloo, I've tried to conquer it using black canvas.

great work. I started drawing with colored pencil on canvas but nothing like yours. your work is just super. how do you fix the work though and do you varnish the finished work.

Hi Mortimer,

I use a fixative and then varnished it with a waterbased acrylic varnish. I'm still researching on the best way to varnish it but so far the current process holds up very well and can be framed without the need of glass.

thanks much for the response. I experimented with Prismacolor final fixative and it seem to work just fine. Think I will try some acrylic varnish from Golden or Liquitex.

This is amazing! You've got the lighting pretty much perfect, colours are spot on too! Really like the texture to the piece too, never even thought of drawing on canvas before but may have to have a go now I've seen this. Brilliant work!

Beautiful!! well use of the black acrylic What colors did you use to make the greens darker?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bleuie In reply to Alejandrovicente [2012-03-22 06:07:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

I use vermilion and purple to darken the greens and neutralize it's brightness. I don't use brown or umber as this will make the color look muddy.

Alejandrovicente In reply to bleuie [2012-03-23 20:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Very good!!, I do the same with the greens in painting, that's why I asked you. I never thought it was brown, you're right with that!

CP on canvas is not very popular as most artists prefer smooth paper, I on the other hand prefer a more textured support.

I was hoping someday I can draw one of your animal photos, but then again I still have many things to learn before I can do justice to any of your works.

Of course you can. I'd really be honoured if you did
You will do them justice just by drawing them. You're an amazing artist my friend

Thanks for the vote of confidence.
My colored pencil on canvas is still in an experimental stage, furs and feathers will be quite a challenge. Once I've developed the right technique, I sure would love to draw one of your magnificent photos.

Keep up the good work there my friend.

How did you do that? Γ–ΓΆ
I have tried to draw with coloured pencil on canvas with black acrylic in the background but it doesnt work Darker tones are suddenly lighter than they should an I dont get them to be seen as strongly.. just with the right light i can barely make it out.. help please?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bleuie In reply to Seramose [2012-02-27 03:01:34 +0000 UTC]

I use acrylic only for the background and not on the image area, colors are more intense working on white rather than struggling to work over the black background. Hope this answered your question.

Thank you very much

CP on canvas is rather unconventional and quite difficult to work with compared with paper, but I love textured surface as it gives a distinct character to a piece.
