What's the difference between a Cape gannet and an African penguin? Well, they both dive down underwater for long periods of time in pursuit of their fishy prey. But the big difference between the two is that how they get around in coasts of southern Africa. Gannets soar through the air by flapping their wings, as they travel great distances over the sea to find rich feeding grounds. Then, when it spots a shoal of fish, arrowlike, the gannet dives vertically with its wings partly closed and plunges deep with a huge splash. African penguins, unlike gannets, can't fly through the air, and also clumsy on land. But when underwater, African penguins appear to be 'flying' through the water. They use their wings to flap, just like paddles. The wing and breast muscles are well developed, to propel penguins through water, a medium much denser than air.
