Description
Why do flocks of great white pelicans hunt at a same time? Well, first, a flock of great white pelicans swim in a horseshoe formation to herd a school of fish into shallow water where they will be easy prey. As the fish become more bunched near the shore, the pelicans dunk their heads simultaneously to prevent the shoal escaping back into deeper water. Underwater, the huge pouches of the pelicans billow to form an almost continuous barrier, giving the fish little chance of escape. With a pouch full of fish, the pelicans wait for the water to drain away before swallowing. Later, its group rejoins others on the bank to rest.
