Of the two groups, I like the pink better! Ha. I would have thought //he// would be the popular one. Very good concept. It makes one think that being different should be a good thing. Keep up the good work.

I love this picture.. reminds me of the story "The Dream of the Little Elephant"

-In the land of elephants there lived a little elephant. He was the color of new grass, he liked to sing sweetly, and he was no bigger than a mouse. The big elephants would look down upon him and laugh. But the little elephant dreamed a dream, and with the help of a sea bird, the wind, a flower, and a worm, he finds where he does indeed belong.

Sweet - I'm glad I can inspire memories in people with art

I noticed you're from VA - I'm there right now - going back at 9 tomorrow - I've been here for a week working at the PETA HQ - it's pretty sweet

That I am Really? I'd love to hear more about that, if you have the time

What-cha wanna know? It's been pretty sweet - the people working there are real nice - the area is okay - a lot less stressful than London

weitmare In reply to Veganvictim [2007-05-13 03:20:33 +0000 UTC]

anything, everything For starters, what brought you to VA?

Veganvictim In reply to weitmare [2007-05-13 03:21:55 +0000 UTC]

Well I work for PETA in the UK and they paid for me to come over here to the US HQ and do a week's marketing training - the weather was pretty cool while I was over here - except for Friday which was a pretty big storm eh!

that's awesome, what a rewarding job! I hope you got to see some beautiful things while you were here!

It is indeed - I'm not sure if you can call Norfolk VA beautiful but I did go to Virginia Beach today - that was pretty sweet - not the tourist part either

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

weitmare In reply to Veganvictim [2007-05-13 12:07:06 +0000 UTC]

well, haha.. true. That's good. There are much more beautiful parts to VA than the beach though, maybe if you visit again you'll get to see them (the Blue Ridge Mountains are beautiful, esp. in the fall when the leaves change)

Veganvictim In reply to weitmare [2007-09-04 14:05:14 +0000 UTC]

yeah I may be back next year - not sure yet - I'm sure there's much nicer parts to Virginia other than Norfolk

Aww...I like it! Not raceism...but the picture. They're really cute too. If I was that red elephant I'd skip around the circle, say, 'Hey, red clearly makes me go faster.' and continue to skip around and try to jump. I'd have a lot of fun and giggle to myself. I could even try to paint others red or put grey spots on to be both 'in' and classified as cool and still be different, an individual that's not ashamed of where he(or she in my case) comes from. I like elephants, pigs aren't bad either but...they're just not as wonderous.

Great concept, I'm sure seldom has so little provoked so much thoughtful debate...poor elephant, you just want to him!~

Veganvictim In reply to AngelusNoir [2006-04-17 13:16:16 +0000 UTC]

aahhh - but is it that elephant that is being shunned or is that elephant shunning the rest?

hmm - curious

"independent pinker" (I love Tzong-lian's pun too)
I love the "same shape different color" stratagey
here. It's a great device to move the eye back to
it again and again. I can "see" the outcast aspects
and wonder why the outcast is the only critter
whose face is hidden from view. Anything to that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Veganvictim In reply to Cmac13 [2006-03-05 13:26:34 +0000 UTC]

the point was to make the pink one an outcast

he's tried to join in and they've ignored and shunned him so he's hanging his head in shame

Cmac13 In reply to Veganvictim [2006-03-05 16:43:24 +0000 UTC]

How terrible that anyone would take what others say or do to personal shame. I see your point, but it makes me to think about it. I love
the graphics of the work though.

there's a lot of things that make me sad to think about it, but then i've almost become de-sensitised to most things now

Cmac13 In reply to Veganvictim [2006-03-06 15:33:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm  and  at the same time.
Desensitised kinda scares me most of all.
Anyway............ I really love your work.

tzong-lian [2005-12-28 20:01:49 +0000 UTC]

To me, this picture represents conformity versus individuality. Notice that the background is gray and all the "conformist" animals all gray too (a sea of dullness and no individuality?) ... while the "independent pinker" (I love that pun!) is a rebel, an outcast who goes against the tide. I guess you can also see it as an anti-racism picture... in America, even though there isn't as much racism, people within the same ethinicities like to stick to each other... like at the high school I go to, there's the Korean group, the Japanese group, the Chinese group, the African American group and White groups ... they just choose not to mix and keep to themselves...

beckagator [2005-12-03 18:22:59 +0000 UTC]

i think hes pink because hes embarassed thats why hes walking away from the group, when he gets over himself maybe he will go back, or maybe he likes to be an individual and is actually smiling at his freedom after painting himself pink?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Veganvictim In reply to beckagator [2005-12-03 18:24:15 +0000 UTC]

aha - another interesting viewpoint - i like the "painting himself pink to be different" angle

Never before has a series of clay (at least they look like clay) elephants and pigs stopped me dead in my tracks and made my jaw drop. Absolutely incredible. I love the many different meanings that one could take from this. Really fantastic work.

makes a good point too many people are outcased for the dumbest reasons and it is our difference that make us great as a person

thanks for the fav - it's actually fimo - similar to clay but can be baked hard in a conventinal oven

the "odd" colour is the actual colour of the model - i didn't have any greey fimo to make the elephants!! lol

byrnwyrm In reply to Veganvictim [2005-10-26 03:11:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see, fimo... Cool.

Oh, yes, I suspected the "odd" color was the actual color of the model. I meant that I liked the color red being used as the one color being the "odd man out". Sorry for the confusion.

Cheers,

Very nicely done!! I think the effectiveness and the power of the message in your piece is emphasised by the simplicity of this. It's too the point and not filled with extras of this and that, which often obscure what is trying to be said. Once again, excellent job
