Description This is possibly one of the most beautiful (in a non-sweaty palmed way) birds i've ever had the fortune to see - out on a trip to Isabella Plantation with Matt we came across this duck - posing for the masses - had to get a shot for beauty's sake

anybody tell me what sort of duck this is?

oooh i saw one of these in river at home a while ago.
which is weird cos i live in scotland and they're native to china or something...
then some bloke reported it to the local paper and i was like 'hey! i saw it first!'...
no idea what happened to it after that. maybe it was a tourist duck.
anyway...
it's a very pretty shot

What a beautiful shot! Love the reflection in the ripples. The colours have come out really well
I like the way he's slightly to the right of the frame looking left into the space. Was this intentional?

Yep, Mandarin Duck or to give it it's latin name Aix galericulata. Native to East Asia but a feral population established itself in the 20th Century.
I'm not a keen ornithologist but I've got a great book for identifying them. I always like to know what it was I saw.

Stepbeyond In reply to Veganvictim [2006-04-18 05:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh me---yes---very much so. You know about the Iquana I own now---right? 3 months old when I bought him for my son'r birthday. Now he's about 4.5 feet from snout to tip of tail.

It was a big decision for me. I knew this lizard was going to end up my responsibility pretty fast (what else is new? lol)
The're alot of work to give them what they need to live a healthy long life. 20yrs +

He's paper trained lol---very true They need affection (can you believe that?) They are so much smarter then people realize. He's very gentle and never even had to warn me he might bite if I didn't leave him alone : ) His tail is a great whip and can really hurt you---but he's never showed the slightest signs of doing that either. Sort of a cross between owning a dog and a cat---of course he is a lizard though---can't forget that part of him.
I must get a few pics on da of him. I think people would like that---not sure.
Of course I think he's cute---but I'm sure I'd hear a few choice words about that opinion.

many people are misguided and think that animals don't have personalities, i've met them all, from goalkeeper cats to poignant pugs, jealous boxer dogs, arrogant hamsters - they are as different as all of us

any photo's?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stepbeyond In reply to Veganvictim [2006-04-19 05:04:49 +0000 UTC]

ur so right on both points. Yes--I have pics. I will post a few soon. Time everyone met my green son lol))))))))))) By the way--my kids love him---and he knows them---is extra gentle with them even though he's always gentle.

It was so cute. The other day he came upstairs and was following my daughter around--everywhere she went---he followed her---she was getting scared--saying "daddy--I don't want him to do that lol" He likes her---her voice---knows she's young---different then the adults. He wanted attention from her---but I can understand why my daughter was getting nervous. The lizard is as long as her. I had a talk with him and he backed off lol)))))

Awesome, as usual! Damn, how do you get all these gret shots? Not to change the subject but did you see the articles about the annual seal hunt in Canada? here is a link: [link] They already killed 100,000 yesterday and are expected to kill 240,000 seal pups today!!! What kind of sick, demented bastard could go clubbing baby seals? I swear to god I would club every one of those fucking murdering pieces of shit to death if I got half a chance. The only animal that is truly overpopulated on this planet is MAN. And it's time to start thinning the heard. (sorry for the rant!!)

325,000 seals is the quota this year - it's totally fucked up - all for fashion - sick bastards

Love Mandarins, there's this duck pond in Grange Over Sands in the Lake District, millions of different ducks go there for laughs and every shop on the main street sells 'duck bread'. You should go there, it's mint as fuck.

As is the picture.

Duck bread? is it shaped like a duck? is it made from duck? does it quack?
