Please, do call me Tuomas I'm interested to portray some not-so-popular fronts as well, is there something specific in your mind?

You do me a great honour Tuomas in return I'd be delighted if you called me Konrad,as for suggestions, nothing much in my mind, i'm personally dedicated to the K. u. K. Armee so maybe Gorlice or scenes from the Brusilov's offensive? It doesn't really matter as once you draw something ww1-themed, it usually makes my brain explode due to amounts of coolness that an average human being cannot take

Hah, you're over-reacting if you ask me We are all friends here.
I have those two AH related-works in my gallery and was something I actually found fun painting. I'm definately going to do them more.
Your suggestions are good, was thinking (in case you might have better sources for K.u.K) if there was some specific action or event? I have illustrated some British Victoria Cross-actions and some Finnish WW2 stories that have resulted into Mannerheim Knight's Cross. I have couple of books available, but it's difficult to find Austro-Hungarian war stories.

Well i'm not an expert on war decorations but I found a couple of stories of officers receiving the Order of Maria Theresa, the highest and most prestiguous A-H military decoration, though it's recipents were only officers. It was easiest for me to look up Polish recipients of the order, though the descriptions are pretty laconic:

cpt. Emil Prochaska (though the name suggests a Czech rather than a Pole): for his stance during the battle for the Gučevo hills on the Serbian front 5.11.1914.

general Tadeusz Rozwadowski: for the command during the battle of Borów (Galicia) 5/6 .09. 1914, where he rallied the withdrawing AH forces and counterattacked the Russians at Borów, which took 1000 prisoners.

my personal favourite: lt. Meiczysław Skulski, for taking and defending with his men Monte Mosciagh near Asiago on the Italian front, 25.05.1916.

as for non-Poles i only managed to find one thing:

Mjr. Anton von Lehár, for commanding 2nd battalion of the Honvéd-Landsturm Infantry Regiment No. 13 during the battle of Chodel near Lublin (Congress Poland) on 2.09.1914., right in the centre of the Russian offensive, Lehar also received the title Baron (Freiherr).

Hi! Thought I return to this conversation. I tried to find more information on lieutenant Skulski and the action he was awarded from. Could you provide some extra information about the specific battle? How about the unit Skulski served in? This way I get a proper idea what their uniforms and insignia would have looked like...

Haha, hello there! It's really cool you're interested in this episode, though I'm not sure if I be able to answer all your questions satisfactorily. What I know for sure is that lt. Skulski served in the 73 Infantry Regiment forming part of the XVII Corps. The whole battle was an episode from a larger offensive launched by the Austrians in mid-May 1916, called 'Strafexpedition' and was aimed to cut the Italian forces, usually focused on battling the Austrians heavily in the Isonzo area. It lasted till June 1916 and despite some success it had to be ceased as Brusilov completely surprised Austro-Hungary in Galicia. This way, around the 10th of June, the Austrians decided to withdraw, also from the previously captured Monte Mosciagh. Here's a map [link] . Also, some modern photos are on this site (sadly i don't understand much Italian) [link]

Exactly the sort of information I was looking for. I was aware of the background of the Asiago offensive and already looked for some photos about the area itself.
I have some unfinished work to do, but I'm sure to do this when I have time

well, that's great news to hear, really! I was afraid it would take much longer for any news on the matter to be heard, so your comment causes more joy in me than you can imagine Your western front pictures are breathtaking, so it could be only enobling for the other areas of war that you decided to take a closer look at them

I'm always eager to explore outside my traditional schemes. Like you hinted, most of my WW1-stuff is set in the Western Front, as this is seen as the most important front for so many. Nevertheless not everybody saw the Western Front, or recognize their heritage in there.
Italian front seems largely a forgotten war, yet it had many interesting aspects, and the fighting was equally brutal (well, if you can measure brutality somehow). Even further, the fighting outside the "usual" Isonzo-front.
I just watched an interesting Italian film, Uomini contro, I recommend it.

Oh yes, soldier lads died all across Europe during that war, so they should be remembered

As for Uomini contro, i think I've seen some clips from it on youtube. I remember the very expressive acting, especially of the officers

Well, I finished the thing couple of days ago. And yes, I forgot to submit work-in-progress sketches. Now you need to wait that I get it copied and scanned. And I'll do that, when I have more works finished.
Anyway, how's life?

Your "Blood Pact charge" didn't fail. I think there's certain desperation there.

Occasionally, when enough time goes by, one feels like making a re-do of his/her past artwork. If you feel like you have more to give into the art piece, go ahead!

dukeleto In reply to tuomaskoivurinne [2010-07-12 09:23:24 +0000 UTC]

yeah I started sketching for it already.
I think where I went wrong before was in the composition, and atmosphere, so there might be quite a few of the more successful elements re-used in any new version.

We are eagerly waiting to see it finished If you want my advice, I'd pay more attention to the sky (make it a bit more ominous) and make the scene bit more epic (with enemy hordes in the horizon also).
