great! looks very well observed!!! reminds me of wh downing's book, "to the last ridge" he speaks in detail about lighting a cig, but under his sheet or cape to hide the light...

Thank you Yes, lighting one exposed would attract snipers... but the troops know that this is safe place, the trench is nicely deep here or are so tired after Somme campaign that they simply don't give a damn anymore.

There's an intriguing intimacy here. I'm not sure what gives that impression. I'd have to say that this is one of my favourites among your war themed work. (You know that's saying a lot!) The atmosphere is pleasant and ... well, I already said intimate.
