Description The Coat of Arms of Sir William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1147 – 1219) described by Archbishop Stephen Langton (1150 –1228) as the "greatest knight that ever lived."

~Drocan asked me to do a design of Marshal's coat of arms for a tattoo he'd like to get.

His coat of arms is party per pale (split down the center) or (gold on the left), vert (green on the right), a lion rampant gules (red lion rampant).

You're doing tattoo drawings too, that's cool.

Yep. Not that I can give people the tattoos, but yeah.

Thanks so much for doing this! The style is exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to convert it to black and white for the tattoo but it is without a doubt a design I'll be happy to wear. I can't even begin to say how pleased I am with how this turned out.
My college application four years ago asked me to write a short essay on "someone who inspires you." Marshall was pretty much a shoe-in for the spot.
For reference, most knights of the period went through several crests, typically just wearing the shield of his lord. This one is the crest he used when he became Earl of Pembroke, however, so I would consider it the most uniquely his, hence the choice.

Oh good! I'm glad it turned out the way you wanted it. I'd love to see a picture of it once you get it.

Certainly! I'm trying to coordinate with a friend at the moment but she hasn't completely finalized her own design yet (she wants to get a compass of some kind) but as soon as that's sorted out I'll be sure to document.

You have GOT to check out the work of Elizabeth Chadwick. She's a historical fiction author who specializes in the Plantagenet dynasty and has written numerous works that feature William Marshall, two of which (The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion) tell the full story of his life.

I saw some of the covers around when I was looking at the various William Marshal crests already present on the internet.

Well, definitely check out the books, they're amazing. The author insists that The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion can be read independently of each other, but I strongly recommend reading the former first, since it provides so much critical backstory (and it comes first chronologically, anyway).

I've actually posted reviews of both books on my friend's blog. Check them out:

Middle English sure sounded different, let me tell you. I couldn't figure out what they were saying in THE CANTERBURY TALES.

Speaking of which...the rapping of the Canterbury Tales? Ever seen this? It's in the weird part of YouTube: [link]
