some notes so I don't forget what to write come portfolio time:
"you're not supposed to be here" is essentially what I want the cat to be telling the viewer, but a little thought reveals that the statement can easily go either way.
the window is intentionally devoid of activity, as well as the upstairs and the downstairs, which fade into the "abyss" to make the viewer feel trapped, confined, and empty. the composition is intended to offer "down" as the only possible route, but that is blocked by the cat, which is neither friendly nor hostile, instead gazing at the viewer with empty eyes.
this feeling of solitude of the reader and the cat is what I intend to convey. A stairwell, presumably normally occupied by people heading or leaving home, is lacking in the comfort it usually keeps, and instead has become a place of uncertainty and unease. I intended to recreate the empty feeling of loneliness and isolation in the viewer with the colours, mood, and subject matter, relying heavily upon the angles guiding the viewer's eyes to those of the cat's to create a sort of mutual connection. perhaps then, the cat no longer seems malevolent but becomes a companion instead, the only other being who understands how you feel.
