Description SURFER YAE! Based on that fun little level in Ganbare Goemon 4, I don't think anyone has ever taken this concept for a piece of fanart but I was begging to do something different with Yae. This time I was working completely from scratch in terms of costume and pose, and I can tell you it's harder than it seems to draw a chibi-esque girl in a bikini. Learning from my last Yae fanart, I really did put a lot of effort into planning this picture out.

Well after many months of work as well as the odd experimentation with photoshop it's finally here. Although I still have a few niggling doubts here and there about things, I feel that with what I've done this is the best I can do. It's just taken so long that I now I feel I can't do any more for the time being. I was attempting to use a more natural approach but it only seemed to end up as soft-cell. Still, I'm pretty satisfied with the way it turned out and, as ever, I learnt a lot from this project.

I hope you Ganbare Goemon fans like her, and this goes out to two special people who helped me see through dark times and gave me the strength to see this picture through to the end.

Yae is © of Konami, and she's absolutely awesome ^^

Thank you so much! I remember how difficult it was getting her chibi form to work in this pic, so I'm glad it worked out well ^^

Yae is one of my favorite characters in the game world!
This level was one of most creatives of the game!
The levels of Yae from Ganbare Goemon 4,were the most fun ones,in my opnion!^^
Again,I'm amazed with your artwork!

Thank you so much, it makes me happy to see my old Yae art has stood the test of time, and it's always good to hear from a true fan of Yae. ^^
I really loved this level too, especially when I first got to play it, and I knew I just had to make something out of it. I definitely agree that Ganbare Goemon 4 had some of the best levels for Yae and probably for the entire Goemon series. Now I've got an urge to play through it again; it's a pity I can't bring my Super Famicom with me to my student residence >.>;;

I'm playing Goemon Oedo Daikaten now,but on the emulator!)=
It's so bad, that I can't beat the minigame of the city of the World 4!
=/
It's a Minigame that consists hitting moles, you have 100 seconds and need to hit 80,to gain a pass to get out of the city.I really need of a joystick!)=

And also,I still didn't not understand how to make the Impact Laser Mouth and The Super punches!D=

Ahhh you're lucky to have an emulator of the Playstation game. I have never been able to get my hands on any of them, especially that one which I was particularly interested in. I can definitely understand the need for a controller though

I actually have a copy of the DS game, but because I'm naturally left-handed it becomes hard to use both the regular controls and the stylus, which you need to do with certain bosses and levels... >.>;;;

A friend of mine helped me here,so I beat the Goemon Oedo Daikaiten, finally!
It's one of the best Ganbare Goemons I ever played!

Also, they picked up a lot of things from the others Ganbare Goemons, like the music that is from Goemon Great Adventure and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon.Unfortunately,it's only six worlds!)=

The DS version I never played, but it's look very cool..
Luckily, I am Right Handed!

I'm glad they've kept the music. The soundtracks for the Ganbare Goemon games are among my favourite of all time. I might have to try searching for that soundtrack now. ^^

I do still like the DS version, even if it is incredibly hard for me. Not to mention the sheer amount of dialogue required to translate...but it still felt like a return to form for the series.

They really did a nice work on Oedo Daikaiten,2D sidescroller, minigames, and the amazing musics,The Ecorori(The King of recycling) and the Steel Five are the villains on this game, unfortunately,I don't know the story of this game!=/
Shin Sendai was one of the worst spin off of the Goemon series!=/

Shin Sendai was one of the worst things they could have done to the series, even when you compare it with what they did with Samus in Metroid M >.>

Still I was thinking of doing a parody piece at some point of Shin Sedai's Yae, since she reminds me of a certain masochist...

Shin Sendai = fuckin' garbage!

The funny thing, that Impact's laser mouth and super punch(various punches) it's the same combination from Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon.
Up,Right,Down,Left, Nasal bullets!

The only thing they messed up with Goemon Oedo Daikaiten was the cities, every time you enter a house or go out,it goes to loading screen! It's so boring! And also, the game is too short in my opnion!)=

You did it again. Ohh boy, so happy to see that. She look so cute wearing bikini. A fav, for sure!!
That's Photoshop, right?! Are you using Lasso Tool to define light-and-shadow?? How is your workflow??
Again: a very nice pic. Congrats!!

rohkova In reply to Dark-Gumpa [2008-10-03 23:00:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much ^^.
Yep it's all pretty much done with photoshop. I've never really used the lasso tool, for light and shade I just use separate layers and brush it on where it needs to be while erasing anything that shouldn't be there.
As for my workflow, I generally plan on paper which I scan in and then digitally ink in photoshop. The colouring stage varies depending on whether I'm using my classic cell-shading style or moving towards soft-cell or natural effects, but I always start by blocking out the base colours first with the help of magic wand. I used to work from the characters first, but more recently I've found it better to start with the background as it helps to create greater harmony in the pic. As I've experimented more, I've found it takes much longer to get through a single picture, but right now I feel I'm happy to just improve on what I know and just work with what I've got, and so hopefully I'll get faster.

Dark-Gumpa In reply to rohkova [2008-10-06 23:29:17 +0000 UTC]

I see. Actually, if you use lasso tool, the light and shade looks kind "square". Yours is different.

"I just use separate layers and brush it on where it needs to be while erasing anything that shouldn't be there." You select the shade using magic wand, and them you use "invert selection", so you can erase everything else more faster, right?!

Cool workflow. Mine is almost the same (if not the same). I still don't know how to properly use Filters, but using brush tool and magic wand just make it right, heh?!

rohkova In reply to Dark-Gumpa [2008-10-07 19:51:33 +0000 UTC]

Well you've got me there: although most of the time I work freehand on light and shadow so that I can have greater freedom. I still love the magic wand though, it really does work wonders and makes my jobs so much easier.

Filters are something I've rarely used in art work like this. I was actually planning to apply one for the water effects initially, but in the end I hated the superficial and random qualities that it brought to the work. Where I have used filters is when I've got a complex piece of drawing that I can't be bothered to ink, both traditionally or digitally, and I've applied one just to add an interesting effect to a simple sketch, as I've done with my "demon-head" [link] and my "from the shadows" [link]

Dark-Gumpa In reply to rohkova [2008-10-09 22:05:20 +0000 UTC]

"Demon-head" look really creep. I think I know that filter... Neon Glow??

"From the shadow" is different. Maybe "noise", but there's more. Hmm...

Anyway, nice work on both. So that's how filters works on pics. They really can make the different. I wish I could explore more about it. But, well, I'm so stuck in drawing perfect iconic figures (not sure if I'm having success..), and writing a decent fantasy ebook, that I can't think about effects, or anything else. At least, not yet. Yeah, not yet...

You are now in university, right? It's about Art, or something completely different? Being "completely different", will you go on drawing??
(Chating again. My unstopeable flaw.)

rohkova In reply to Dark-Gumpa [2008-10-11 11:59:11 +0000 UTC]

"Demon-head" is actually a mix of two filters, one of which is Neon Glow, I'm not sure on the exact measurements since it's been a while and even now I'm having trouble replicating it exactly. Your right that there is something more with both of them. What I will say is that what you do before scanning can be just as important as what you do in photoshop. I know I'm being mysterious but right now I'm just working on theories to understand exactly what I did to get those effects.

I think your iconic figures are pretty good, and I know how it feels trying to balance out the different aspects of a project: heck right now I'm trying to balance simple one-off Yae pics with a group story project and my own series like Dark Ascendant and Project Wintersun. But take your time and focus on what you've got to make it the best you can ^^

I am at university, in my first year honours degree for History of Art. My univeristy: the School of Oriental and African Studies specialises in world cultures so I'm mainly studying the art of Africa and Asia. I hope to later on specialise in Japanese art. It's a theory based course so I have very little practical art involved, but the art I see often inspires me for my own projects. I still keep my art as a hobby, and I'm actually planning to enter a few competitions next year, so I'm going to be dedicating what little free time I have to improving my art work and maybe even produce some actual short story mangas.

Dark-Gumpa In reply to rohkova [2008-10-13 22:27:12 +0000 UTC]

It's aways hard to replicate a good pic, heh?! Especially when we think we know what we're doing. Sometimes, when I try to replicate one of my characters, I think: "well, the basic form for this one is a circle, a square and a tube... after working the silhouette, I round it all... cool, no big deal." And then, in the end, after taking a good look, I say: "What the... it wasn't supposed to be like that!! What's wrong???" That give me such an anxious moment, because I can never tell what've gone wrong, or different. But, after some weeks, when I look at the pic again, I begin to like it. Kind strange, isn't it? But also good.

So, you are studying "History of Art". That's perfect!! It means you'll get very close to create your own Art Style, and maybe even make vanguard art (I'm serious!!!). I understand this: if you know the theory behind the pic, you can pick the qualities that most satisfy your skills, add with the qualities of other pics (which had satisfy you as well), and then bind-it all in a single drawing. Something like Goemon's Human Proportion + Will Eisner Light-And-Shade = Creepy Ganbare Goemon!!

Hmm... yes, something like that.

My iconic figures are good?! Thank you. I'm giving my best to make it better. Indeed: it's hard to work on two or more projects at the same time. They consume all of your time. Sometimes it's a killing work, sometimes it's the most satisfying thing to do. Too bad that, almost all of the time, the family don't understand what we're doing. Some even think it's a waste. Honestly: I hate when they try to take me out of my drawing-life. Only my very dear cousin, Leticia, understand what I'm trying to do. She says "I'm so proud to be your cousin... Keep going, ok?!", and stuff. She's such a nice and cute girl!!

Geez, am I writing a book in here? Rohkova, I'm stopping here.

If I go on chating, I'll send the messages to your journal, like you suggested. Ok?! But, before I finish, tell me: what's the "Dark Ascendant" and "Project Wintersun" projects?? Manga? Book?

rohkova In reply to Dark-Gumpa [2008-10-15 00:17:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's precisely what I go through! Also I find that when I do a quick a sketch or scrap it somehow turns out exactly like how I imagined it, yet when I actually try hard with a composition that copies it it fails completely >.<.

I have applied some of my history of art knowledge to past works. From the shadows was the first time I ever applied Linear perspective (the orthogonals created from the lines in the corridor will all line up to that guys head), while with my "Yae on the rooftops" I used my knowledge of Japanese prints when it came to designing the background, even using an actual print for the landscape backdrop. It's something that has recieved good reception and definitely something I want to experiment with more ^^

I do feel your pain though of having a family that doesn't understand our great projects: they just think I'm wasting my time sketching stuff when I have actually have something truly amazing and complex in the works that may decide my future. But it sounds like your getting good support from your cousin. ^^

And now about the projects. Well there both manga projects that I've had in my head for sometime and it's only recently that I've been able to work seriously on them. Dark Ascendant in particular has been in the works for quite a while and the story line and characters have evolved quite cleverly over time. Dark Ascendant is my 19th Century Horror Manga, and while I've produced lots of character designs for it, very few of them have been put up yet. It's probably going to be my biggest project, so I often leave it to work on a simpler fantasy story called Project Wintersun (in truth it doesn't have a proper name yet) in which I have greater freedom of creativity. Wintersun is actually set in an isolated frozen continent based on Imperial Russia but with heavy steampunk elements mixed with Slavic lore. So far I've got a lot of the character designs and a few ideas for technology but with both I'm having trouble piecing the storyline fragments together, particularly at the beginning. Once this is done it should all be alright from there on ^^

Thank you ^^. Much of it was based on what screenshots I could find from the level, though I tried for a more softer approach. It was the part that probably took the longest, being one of the things I was determined to get right (after past experience with water-effects), so I'm really happy it's turned out well.

Thank you so much! Getting Yae into a workable surfer pose was probably the hardest bit for me, mainly because of having to translate it into her chibi proportions. I also experimented with lots of different swimsuits and it was hard to pick the right one, so I'm really happy that you like ^^

I didn't have time to write a comment when I fave'd this, so here it is now. This is pretty much exactly what I envisioned when I heard there was a "Surfer Yae" level in GG4. You really did a great job with it, the water looks especially nice.

I just love how the games mix up the levels with bits of randomness, and I still wanted to go one step further with the design to make it my own. I'm glad you like it, particularly with the water effect that became a real gamble for me quite late in the project. I'm really happy to have created something likened to your envisioned Surfer Yae ^^
