Second go at this one this year. This time with no UHC filter, as the moon was quite dim. I almost thought that this session was a waste of time, due to me not realising I was shooting in JPEGS all night! I asked on an astro imaging forum, and luckily people on there told me what to do.. pheww lol! Anyway, Iā€™m quite happy with this. I quite like the detail in the dark dust lanes of the galaxy, especially the ones running just above its bright core; kind of looks like dark oil in water!

Image details:

Scopos 80mm f5 refractor
Canon 350D
32 x 2 minute exposures
28 @ ISO 800, 4 @ ISO 1600
Deepsky stacker and Photoshop

Thanks

Well bloody hell, that's a great photo! (By the way, do people form the UK really think it's annoying & hilarious that people from the US sometimes use British slang? I cannot help it sometimes...I watch a lot of British tv shows & movies and also read British literature. I'm sure I'm making an ass of myself). But hey, that's the first phrase that came to mind!

Now, to be on topic...really...great photo! It's so big and the image is very clear. I wish I could view the Andromeda galaxy through a telescope and see it like that. (By the way, I'm curious...what exactly is the fuzzy object about Andromeda Galazy?) As beautiful as this is, in space speed & time, Andromeda Galaxy is approaching as at a very fast rate! If you think about it, space is truly a violent place!

That's better
You tried prolonging exposures?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

quicksimon In reply to FoxMaq [2008-10-15 20:43:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate! Yeah, 2 minute exposures!! I could have probably gone longer, but i was sure that 2 mins had no trails so i just kept it at that. I couldn't be bothered to lay on my back and check for star trails at longer exposures every 2 mins lol! I get neck ache! If i get a very accurate polar alignment, the refractor and large sensor of the 350D give me long exposures. I don't think there's a need to autoguide, which i'm glad of, cos that was a right pain in the ass!! woooo! lol!

Try 180 seconds.
Hmm, what is the focal lenght of that system? It's 400 mm FL tube, right? You should be fine without AG then.

Thanks man! Well, I could have posted it a lot bigger, but the scrolling would annoy people I guess lol! I've just had a quick look at mass effect. It has a massive wiki page ! [link] Looks cool ! I alike to tweek my pics to a bit on sigur ros' 1st album 'Von' . It's like alien music or something! lol ! Or the Solaris soundtrack, that's quite spooky. I'll have to have a listen. What does it sound like mate?

check this out, dude: [link] - this is how Mass Effect music sounds - IMHO almost the best game soundtrack. Anyway game is fantastic, I don't know whow much do you like games but if you like them at least a bit then... well, you like also astro, right? so Mas Effect is something much more than just a game. It's sort of interaction CG animation movie I mean it. Graphics is just film-like, plot is film-like, music too! it's hard sci-fi story... uhm, well just try this trailer: [link] ( watch it in high res ) and here you have piece of action from this game ( also click on hi-res. version ): [link] This game just rocks... and although it's action rpg it doesn't mean you have to spend 100hours to go it through - actually you can finish it in 20hrs or so - in case you didn't like long games have fun!

I'm so happy you shot her! After so many attempts at trying to get Andromeda, and failing miserably, she has gained a gender status... >_>

Your photo is brilliant! Did you tweak the coloration at all, or what is mainly this blue coloration?

Great work!!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

quicksimon In reply to Athenazero [2008-10-14 20:55:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! Well, you'd be right to give it the female gender status, just like the greeks did back in the day. Mythology has it that Andromeda was the name of the daughter of cepheus and cassiopea I haven't tweek the colour at all. I think by using the curves, the orange light pollution glow is replaced by the more blue colour...

Thanks again

No problem.^^

And I know well the story of Andromeda, that's why I call her a she and not a he. That's why she's (the constellation) in the sky near her mom too. My point was just that I call her a she and not an 'it' like most objects.^^ I'm the same way with Orion too. By far he is my favorite constellation and the nebulae is gorgeous!

What do you mean by using the curves in your picture?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 2

quicksimon In reply to Athenazero [2008-10-15 21:01:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, I didn't know the story that well, to be honest. I just knew that andromeda was a ancient greek girl's name, so I googled it I see what you mean.. Orion is the 'daddy' of constellations; lot's of stuff going on around 'him' Re. Curves. Ever used curves in photoshop? Like levels, you can tweak the brightness of the picture. Make the background darker and the galaxy lighter. Pretty essential with light pollution.

I forgot to ask, what trouble are you having with shooting this one?
cheers!

Athenazero In reply to quicksimon [2008-10-16 00:48:51 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh... got ya. I should really play around with some of my pictures with curves. I haven't tried too much before.^^ If it's essential then I will certainly have to learn!

I'm not quite sure what my problem is. I think she is too faint to be picked up with my camera, but I can see her perfectly in the binoculars... My camera can only stay open for 30s max (Boo!>< ) so this may be my trouble. I want to get a new piece of equipment that will let me adjust the speed as much as I want. Before I thought my problem was with not finding her... but tried nights she was at Zenith so I knew I could get her, but still no luck... I think she just hates me.>_>

quicksimon In reply to Athenazero [2008-10-29 17:20:50 +0000 UTC]

You shouldbe able to find her with 30 sec exposures... But yeah, i cam with a high ISO and 'bulb' setting will be much better Oh and a telescope will help quite a bit lol! Hope to see an image of her from you soon

Athenazero In reply to quicksimon [2008-10-29 22:23:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my bulb setting only lasts up to 30s...

I hope to get an image of her soon too!
