Description The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with its companion dwarf galaxies M32 and M110. Taken on 22/8/06, one of the most crystal clear nights I've ever seen It's believed that the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxy are travelling towards each other at 100 km/sec!!

Hope you like!

Image details:

Taken with a 300mm lens to get a wider field of view. My telescope at prime focus will only fit about three quarters of the galaxy in. I hope one day to use my scope to make a mosaic of 3-4 images of different areas of the galaxy.

Canon 350D with Sigma 70-300mm Apo DG lens
Piggy-Backed on my new HEQ5Pro mount
32 images stacked in PS
Exposure times - 40-70 seconds
All ISO 1600
Light pollution removed in PS

I wish to know, how to capture an image like that

Thanks very much for the on this!! What you need is a camera that can take long exposures and a telescope that can move the same rate as the earth's spin. If you look through a telescope that doesn't move with the sky, whatever you're looking at will seem to move slowly across from one side to the other, because of the earth's spin. Because galaxies and stuff in deep scpace are faint, you need long exposures. This is one is about 60 seconds. Thing is though, if you do a long exposure with a telescope that can't move very slightly to stay with the stars' movement, the stars will trail and look like small lines and not pin-point stars. So, I have a telescope that moves at the same rate as the stars' movement across the sky. This keeps the stars still with respect to the telescope and camera, so long exposures can be made. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions or need me to explain it better, let me know Take care

sorry for a this very late reply!! Thanks very much! I'm, glad you like this and my astrophotography. That's what it's all about, enjoying it myself, and being able to share it with people who would also enjoy it

Simon,

Simon, Simon, Simon! Well done!

That image has a surreal and ethereal persona.

If only she rose high enough in the Southern Hemisphere for me to have a stab at it.

My next target is M33, the Triangulum/Pinwheel Galaxy. It's in roughly the same area but rises a fair bit higher.

Regards,
H

Thanks very much!! I love the way you've described that!!! .......'surreal and ethereal persona'!! That is what I think of this and many other images of the heavens. Objects so vast and amazing just suspended out there in darkness. It's a shame you don't get to see this very high up I have just imaged m33! i've got pretty good data, but I just can't get the damn light pollution out without loosing the galaxy I've posted it on the ukai forum and a guy from florida has tweaking it. The job he has done is amazing He's given me instruction but I'm still a little confused
Good luck with the galaxies mate! Take it easy!

Awesome! I still can't believe the detail you get!

Hey, I was up in Lake Geneva, WI and stopped by the Yerkes Observatory [link] and thought of your work here on DA. I'm sure you'd have a field day if you got our hands on that scope!

Thanks a lot m8!!! You went to an observatory, awesome! Did you get to see anything!? Yeah, i'd love to have a go at a massive scope, but i wouldn't have a clue! I tried the link but it doesn't work, i'll try again Thanks again!

LastVigilante In reply to quicksimon [2006-08-29 17:54:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, it works for me... heres the text link: [link]

Actually, I didn't get to go inside, they are only open on Saturday's to the public, and I was there on a Friday. Apparantly its the largest refracting telescope in the world! From the outside the building was quite massive, so I certainly could imagine.

Unfortunately, the University of Chicago is putting up the land for auction, and there is a huge debate between preserving the telescope and historic building, and the developers who probably want to build on what is a valuable piece of real estate. It reminds me of the debate over the Hubble. I hope they dont tear it down, even though it's technology is out of date, it is still a magnificent landmark and artifact of astronomy history.

Got the link now thanks!! Yeah, it looks great but as you say, pretty old! i fully agree with you, it's a part of history and should be left alone. It should be a listed building, that way they can't develop on the land!

Thanks very much Chris!! I'm very pleased with this one. It was the first go with my HEQ5 pro mount. I waited till 11.30pm for it o rise higher before I set up. Plus, my neighbours were having some kind of party and their security light kept going on!!!!!!!!!!!!! This night has been the only clear night in about 2 months m8! June/July was clear bu a lot of it coincided with a bright moon and the nights don't go very dark up here around that time of the year!! Bring on Autumn Thanks again m8!!

Hector42 In reply to quicksimon [2006-09-01 16:27:11 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I guess using these things isn't too good...think about the image as three seperate b/w-images which are not in the optimal relation to each other. Levels and curves are the optimal tools for this: try to get the histograms (r, g and b) in a way, that they roughly match each other. In other words that means, that each colour is equally strong in the image and this means that the image is as colourful as possible. Well, maybe you have to raise the saturation to make this visible to the eye. ^^
Try this link, I followed this tutorial (for PixInsight, a highly recommendable freeware):

[link]

You may have a look on the other tutorials too...these people really know how to process images...but advanced techniques seem a bit more...complex . Thes are not easy to understand, at least for me...maybe my english isn't sufficient enough, on that level.
