Description Alola, Noir here! Finally, after much discussion with many parties, I present to you the Water starter! This guy took a lot of doing, but I think the final product looks as vicious and malicious as I imagined it to be! Woo!

Now I know what you're thinking, "Shouldn't you be playing Sun & Moon right now?" ... Why yes... but it got stuck in the mail, you see...

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this last (but not least) starter Pokemon from me!

---------------------------
GENERAL CONCEPTS
---------------------------

The idea for this Pokemon is based on many living and prehistoric creatures. Of note, they are: mustelids (beavers and otters), equines (war horses), various crustaceans (prawns, shrimp, horseshoe crabs, crayfish, lobsters), with honorable mentions for the giant isopod(!) and euryptids (otherwise called 'sea scorpions'). Some thematic inspirations are submersible vehicles, mermaids, and armored tanks.

In addition, they are thematically made to represent the champion knight of a royal court. This is in parallel with the other two starters, where the Fire starter is the court spymaster or wizard, and the Grass starter is its liege and master.

In a different sense, this Pokemon line represents the Ace in a pack of playing cards, with the Grass starter representing the King or Queen, and the Fire starter representing the Joker. This is combined with certain design elements to further reinforce this theme: Bubbug, Submersect and Esclawton represent the suit of clubs, with each of them having a clover (or three circles equidistant to one another) somewhere on their body. The Fire and Grass starters represents the suits of diamonds and hearts, respectively.

The last overarching design for these starters are the three basic archetypes of all literary works. Esclawton, with its personality tainted with a selfish pursuit for its own benefit, perfectly fits into the role of the antagonist (or supervillain). It should be noted that it started as a rather innocent, docile creature, showing how easily evil corrupts. Its counterparts, the Fire and Grass starters, represent the antihero (or vigilante) and the protagonist (or superhero) respectively.

--------------------------
CONCEPT & DESIGN
--------------------------

BUBBUG: About the size of a cat, these rare Pokemon are well-known for their strange style of swimming: upside down. This peculiar way of swimming is due to its swim bladder being located in its abdomen. Its fins are modified wings that allow it to swim gently across the open sea. It uses bioluminescence to light up the dark depths of the sea floor, and forms light-filled bubbles with its antennae for navigation in open water. If moving against a current, or on land, a Bubbug is capable of walking on its legs. They are mysteriously docile creatures and love to be handled by human beings, making them a favourite among exotic Pokemon owners. Bubbug most closely resembles giant isopods, with colors to reference its aquatic, and cold-loving nature. It has a 'visor' on its head to resemble a knight's visor, to fit its position of the 'champion' of the trio. Bubbles are a recurring design for this Pokemon. Thematically, a Bubbug represents the fledgling knight, or perhaps a squire, who is gladly carrying out its duties around the castle.

SUBMERSECT: Submersect prefers to spend their time underwater, floating aimlessly across the ocean. Its method of finding food is unknown, but is thought to be through filter-feeding. This stage of this Pokemon's life is met with a lot of confusion by its keepers, as the pleasant affectionate nature of a Bubbug is replaced by listless apathy. Most believe that this stage is its pupal stage, despite it being able to functionally grasp with its claws and climb ashore with its legs. For design, the small luminescent bubbles occasionally coming out of its mouth gives it an appearance of slow and relaxed breathing, adding to it looking tired. Appearance-wise, this Pokemon shares even more of a resemblance with a giant isopod, especially with its sad and sleepy expression. It is also curled up in the same way a giant isopod would if it feels threatened. It also somewhat resembles the giant Atlantic horseshoe crab in body plan. On top of that, the general appearance of the Pokemon is that of a heavy armored helmet. Finally, in a thematic sense, a Submersect is the stage of a knight's life where they become too treasured to be used in fighting, instead used as a decoration to intimidate or 'influence' a foreign dignitary. Being showered with care and praise, the knight becomes soft. A joke. This is reflected in its generally bored, sleepy attitude.

ESCLAWTON: Despite its vicious appearance, this Pokemon wants nothing more but to protect its family... after it gets something to eat, of course.Β  Not strictly a marine Pokemon, it can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour on land to catch prey that ran ashore. This semi-aquatic behavior allows it to be reared by humans in coastal areas; it can even be ridden. Its natural tendency to chase anything it doesn't recognize makes it a very good guard for the community. It claws are useful for seizing prey as well as being its main method of attack underwater. By quickly and forcefully clamping its heavy metal claws shut, a bubble is formed right before popping into an explosive decompression, sending a blast that can knock most creatures out cold. Esclawton resembles a large lobster, with a face resembling a dark horse-shaped helmet with a large serrated horn. Bubbles has turned into foam, making it appear enraged or even rabid, unable to control its mad impulses and dark desires. These elements are meant to fits the theme of a knight who has gone rogue, breaking out of the shackles of their previous life in search of greater glory, or perhaps wanting to break away to find its own identity. In essence, it has become a black knight.

IN-GAME STORY
---------------------

Route: COUP D'ETAT

Hypothetically, a game with this Pokemon as your starter is one of strife and self-realization. You start off being bullied by the evil organization, who eventually steals your starter Pokemon for a while until your best friend retrieves it and gets it back to you. Ever since this incident, you become unhinged: you become thirsty for revenge, not wanting it to happen to you or anyone else ever again. You go on a quest for redemption, the memory of your failure to protect your Pokemon weighing down on you. Your intentions started off pure, but you become ruthless. As you grow and see the inequities in your life, you see your destiny laid before you - to control the whole region, to create a safe haven for Pokemon and their trainers. You destroy anyone who you see as a threat, no matter their affiliation: your rival, gym leaders, members of the evil organization, all will bow down to the magnificence that is you and your Pokemon. People will regard you with unease, sensing a bad air around you, with even some children (and Pokemon) refusing to talk to you or running away when you try to talk to them.

Due to your starter's typing, you are not weak to either of the other two starters, even into the final evolutions. On top of that, your typings will always allow you to hit your rivals' starter Pokemon super-effectively. Your best friend, wanting be supportive, always chooses the starter which primary typing is weaker to yours, in this case is the Fire starter. Hence, as the story progresses he pops in once in a while to give you information, but largely leaves you alone. He is not particularly bothered about anything you do, but will try to advise you into doing the most efficient (and least destructive) course of action. At certain points he will support you in large-scale battles, but does not follow you around. As the story closes to an end, he extends his hand to you, asking to become your lifelong advisor. Perhaps afraid you might become an unpredictable monster, he decides you cannot go on without his counsel. You accept, knowing he is the only one you can truly trust. You don't care about what others have to say about you.

Your second rival is a neighbor girl who have always ignored you and your best friend. Both of you question the decision of giving this unrelated third party a starter Pokemon, but as the story progresses she begins to build a formidable team capable of going up against you.Β  Her team constantly adapts from the last time she was beaten by you; she always has different Pokemon to counter your last team. This is frustrating for you, but your best friend typically gives you information before she attempts to do anything against you. With your best friend acting as informant, you will always know what to expect from her team. Several times, he also joins you in a few important face-offs against her. Her carousel of powerful Pokemon will keep you on your toes, but she will always have her bastion, the Grass-type starter, in her team. This is a show of confidence: that despite her shortcomings, she will never abandon her first Pokemon.

As for the Pokemon League, you quickly defeat the Elite Four, who have already heard of your exploits. They know how quickly you took care of the villainous organization, and know they likely have no chance to beat you in single battle. Hence, you are met with exasperation all the way through the League. One even asks you for mercy after you steamroll through their roster. As you go up to meet the Champion, he welcomes you, and invites you to listen to what he has to say. As he discusses with you about your potential, you realize how much you don't care about what he has to say, cutting it short before he can give you his ultimatum. The girl bursts in before you could challenge him, rushing to stand between you and the Champion. All of a sudden, the final battle becomes one against the only trainer who could challenge your power: the girl. Disgusted and enraged, you immediately send out your Pokemon to attack. Before you could lash out against her, your best friend appears and calms you down. He reminds you that getting emotional when you've gotten this far is foolish, and implores you to reassess the situation. The girl provokes the two of you, mentioning that she had brought her whole team of Pokemon to try and defeat you. Your friend becomes annoyed at this situation, and sends out his team to support you. The final (triple) battle will be against her whole roster of 18 Pokemon, each corresponding to the primary types. You friend has your back, but it's still an 18-on-12 battle. After you defeat her, she escapes from the region with the Champion before you could get to him. Post-game, no-one knows of her whereabouts, but you know she will come back to challenge you.

Afterwards, you put yourself in the position of Champion, sitting at the throne of the ancient region. Your coronation was sparsely attended, with your friend the only person you allowed to touch you. You become paranoid of your enemies, sending out spies to ensure that the people underneath you do not become too ambitious. You outlaw any trades involving Pokemon, seeking to prevent any further incidents like the one that befell you. You heighten punishments for crimes against Pokemon, your dreams of retribution realized. Dissenters are brought to court and questioned of their affiliations, and the region goes under lock-down. You spend your days listening to your advisor doing his best to explain to you the basics of running the region, but you always stop him after a short while, asking for him to continue later. He reminds you that he is still your best friend from time to time; looking straight into your eyes, telling you that you can trust him. You agree with him, and find yourself wanting badly to depend on him. Yet despite his comforting tones, it feels as though your childhood with him was nothing but a dream... and that a darkness is taking over.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea! It's just a lot of scribbling and figuring out what works. Sometimes a name pops into my head and I want to draw something around it, it's strange.

Thank you for your comment!

Not to go too deep into it, but here are just some of the attacks they learn! (minus the HMs because they're becoming defunct now)

STAB moves: [WATER] Bubble, Bubble Beam, Water Pulse, Muddy Water, Brine (TM), Aqua Tail (TM), Scald (TM), Crabhammer [BUG] Fury Cutter, Struggle Bug, Bug Bite, X-Scissor, Signal Beam, Megahorn [STEEL] Iron Defense, Metal Sound, Metal Claw (TM), Bullet Punch, Iron Tail (TM), Iron Head, Flash Cannon (TM)

Accessory moves: [NORMAL] Protect, Work Up (TM), Swagger, Tackle, Take Down, Head Smash, Return (TM), Frustration (TM) [DARK] Nasty Plot, Snarl, Assurance, Thief (TM), Pursuit (TM), Dark Pulse (TM), Night Slash (TM)

Coverage moves: [GROUND] Mud Slap, Bulldoze (TM), Earthquake (TM) [FIGHTING] Detect, Revenge, Brick Break (TM), Superpower [GRASS] Solar Beam (TM), Energy Ball (TM) [ELECTRIC] Charge Beam (TM), Thunderbolt (TM), Thunder (TM) [ICE] Mist, Ice Beam (TM)

EDIT: Oh, not to forget, its signature move is called Loballista, a Special Water-type move with 70 Base Power and 95 Accuracy, which always Paralyzes if it hits.

Its stat distribution is very high Sp. Atk and (physical) Def, high HP, and average Speed, Atk and Sp. Def. This makes it largely a special sweeper with good bulk against physical attackers, like an inverse of a Gallade.
