Description Hi there, Noir here, back again with another Pokemon concept! This time it is the Grass starter! This one took a longer time to do because I couldn't figure out how to draw shadows (I eyeballed them) so it took a lot of trial and error.

Regardless, I enjoyed the process of designing this critter. It took some doing before I was happy with the ratio of eagle-to-lion(-to-Pegasus-to-sphinx), but I eventually found good middle grounds for all three stages of this starter. On top of that, this is a complicated Pokemon to talk about, so bear with me. Anyway, I hope you guys like it!

GENERAL CONCEPT
-------------------------

The appearance for this Pokemon is based on various creatures of ancient myth, most apparently the Sphinx, followed by the Griffin and Hippogriff, and finally Pegasus. Some real-life animals they resemble are: lions, birds of prey (owls and eagles), various equines (horses, ponies), and felids (domestic cats and kittens, wildcats, tigers, and lions).

The biggest concepts revolving around this Pokemon is the struggle of intelligence, that is to say, existentialism: philosophy concerning humanity's existence and its purpose here on Earth.

As creatures wielding sapient intelligence, humans are wired to be curious of our surroundings, to question everything around us: 'Why are we here? Who are we?' Foliya and its evolutions, with their advanced level of intelligence, share a similar experience as us. Curious, and yearning to understand their existence, they look to us for guidance, and trusts in us to lead them into an enlightened space.

In which case, the names for these Pokemon seem archaic because conceptually, they were named by humans many millenia ago. They have since carried these names through many generations, and will carefully write them out to show us how they are spelled.

Aqgrythiri and its antecedents are based on the prince or princess of a royal court, and eventually grow up into the king or queen. This matches the other starters: the Fire starter represents the court wizard or spymaster, and the Water starter represents the champion of the court.

Another theme for this starter trio is of a deck of cards. As relayed above, the Grass starter represents the King or Queen. As for the other starters, the Fire starter represents the Joker and the Water starter is the Ace. This theme is supported by designs on each starter potraying a different suit of cards. Foliya, Eponysus and Aqgrythiri, with their pink-to-red heart-shaped petals, represents the suit of hearts, while the Fire and Water starter represent the suit of diamonds and clubs respectively.

The third and final theme is that each starter embodies different characters of a comic book (or any literary work). Aqgrythiri and its evolutions, with their stalwart, courageous nature (though naive) fits well into the role of the superhero (or protagonist). The other two, the Fire and Water starters, represent the vigilante (antihero) and the supervillain (antagonist) respectively.

--------------------------
CONCEPT & DESIGN
--------------------------

FOLIYA: These extremely rare Pokemon are only found living near human civilization, and has been since ancient times. While they thrive on human affection, they are highly sensitive to changes in their environment. As human civilization got more advanced, less Foliya were born being able to withstand the new, forbidding atmosphere, and suffocate soon after hatching. It has been theorized that the Foliya that survived might be stronger than the rest, however, this old adage is untrue for this Pokemon: Foliya that survive their first few days are plagued with medical conditions throughout their lives. The only way for a Foliya to survive in the modern age is for it to be raised away from urban areas, which is why most of their living population are found on farms. Unfortunately, most of their keepers do not know of their historical significance, and treat them as regular pets rather than the intelligent Pokemon they are. While sitting, this Pokemon looks like an owlet in a nest, but in motion it acts more like a cat, taking long strides and big jumps to get to where it wants. Their large, bright eyes indicate their highly curious nature, and they are able to learn just as quickly and understand just as much as a human being, though they can only communicate in chirps. To help it interact better, it always tries to learn how to write, laboriously copying every stroke of the pen with its front legs. Their letters comes out smudged and ugly, like a child's finger drawing, but it is ecstatic to be able to directly talk to its master. Unfortunately, in many places where they are raised, their owners do not know of this talent, and believe that they are being destructive when they are painting their messages on their furniture and walls. The subsequent punishments to them usually leads to most Foliya not wanting to learn how to write anymore. Thematically, this Pokemon represents the child of a noble, born at an advantage and yet inexperienced. The child looks forward to new experiences, and wishes it was allowed to go outside and learn on its own, but is held back by limitations and expectations.

EPONYSUS: Rarely seen today if at all, Eponysus find themselves at a crossroads between returning to the wild and staying with humanity. At this stage of their life, they are strong enough to withstand even the worst troubles that may come. It solves difficult problems quickly and quietly, surprising even scholars with their deductive skill. They write with great dexterity with their hooves, which have tapered to a fine point. This allows them to write close to a fountain pen, and they can even write calligraphy. They are comtemplative Pokemon, despite their outwardly devil-may-care attitude, and will sit down to write their thoughts in the form of songs and poems. When asked, they can sing the tune to their songs to their owner. Despite their accomplishments, Eponysus are relatively unknown Pokemon, now mostly relegated to books on ancient history. Just above their legs are swells of vegetation, and hidden underneath are their wings. Four in total, these wings allow Eponysus to fly large distances. Combined with their strong memory, they were widely used as messengers in ancient times, delivering everything from important correspondence to simple notes between people in an age long gone. Children, if they are old enough and small enough, are able to ride them as it soars up into the sky, an experience little can match. In terms of appearance, this Pokemon's stripes is meant to evoke the appearance of a wildcat, which behavior it resembles. The head of this Pokemon becomes more streamlined, like a hawk's, though usually obscured by its 'scarf' of loose plant fibre. Excess foliage moves down the back of this Pokemon, turning its tail into cascading shrubbery. For its theme, Eponysus represents a noble teenager who has grown well into their responsibilities, taking everything in stride, and performing in grace under pressure. At this stage of their lives, they become more wistful as many of their skills become relegated to muscle memory, and they are left with their thoughts for most of the day.

AQGRYTHIRI: It is not quite known how long these Pokemon live, as it survives many generations in a single family, and recollection begins to fall apart after the first few generations. Despite their longevity, these Pokemon are slow to breed, perhaps sensing that its surroundings are not suitable for it to raise a family. Small groups of wild Aqgrythiri do find shelter in deep jungles, but it is unknown if the population is thriving, away from human eyes. Once, a long time ago, they were war mounts, dominating the sky with their huge silhouette, exacting supreme justice on their masters' enemies below them. Their massive white wings are usually hidden, folded safely away in the brown part of their 'mane.' Not only limited to field duties, Aqgrythiri were used as master planners, able to strategize against even the most experienced commanders. Their duties were not limited to war, either, as they are also very good at helping around with domestic chores. Between manual labor, teaching and entertaining the children, doing the laundry, and cooking meals (among other things), the life of an Aqgrythiri is hectic - but fulfilling. Some Aqgrythiri are even valued members of their community, giving their input on the state of their neighborhood and how they could improve it, through long, well-reasoned essays written down with their needle-point claws. In terms of appearance, this Pokemon has fully matured into a large, proud lion, with a mane composed of large leaves and petals. Their faces become a combination of an eagle and a lion, with their characteristic glare enough to soil the pants of even the hardest of villains. Their cries are of an otherworldly creature, shrieking yet roaring at the same time, striking fear into the hearts of feeble men. Their feet end with massive sharp claws made of hardened petals, hard enough to claw through metal. Their forelegs appear more like bird's feet, which makes it appear as if it is wearing gauntlets. Essentially, this Pokemon thematically represents a noble who have come unto their own, succeeding yet sticking by their principles. Unperturbed by outside influence, they follow a path of destiny that they know to be true. They fight for the rights of the kings and queens, for the rights of the nobles, and for the rights of the common man. They fight for the good of all mankind.

IN-GAME STORY
---------------------

Route: SAVIOR

In a hypothetical game based on this region, this Pokemon will lead you on a path of greatness through acts of selfless virtue. You start off on your journey feeling unsure of yourself, though finding comfort in the support given by those around you. When you get your starter Pokemon, your heart swells with pride, and you set your heart on doing your best regardless of the results. You choose the Grass starter, who is at a disadvantage against both of the other two starters, even into their final evolutions. And yet, you fight on regardless, building a team that could fend off even the worst attacks from your rivals. Your strength of character shines through, and everyone you interact with will empathize with your struggle. In the end, you are able to take down the evil organization with the help of gym leaders you had previously beaten, and friends you have made along the way. People will talk of you fondly, and children look up to you in admiration.

Meanwhile, the player character's best friend will always choose the Pokemon which primary type is weak to yours. As you picked the Grass starter, your best friend (and rival) will choose the Water starter, and assume the role of the villain. He will slowly become more distant to you, perhaps out of jealousy of your exploits, and you see them become a ruthless individual who will do whatever it takes to get things done. No matter how much you talk to them, they seem to sink deeper into a pit of desperation. As the game progresses, they will argue with you at every turn, interrogating you on your principles and motives, challenging you to battle after battle. Your friendship becomes too strained to mend, and he finally declares you as an eternal rival, leaving the region once you defeat the Pokemon League.

A third main character of this hypothetical storyline is a neighbour you rarely talked to and never associated with, but was given the final starter Pokemon by the Pokemon Professor regardless. They will hence always choose the starter which primary type is strong against yours, which in this case would be the Fire starter. As such, she will be a rather elusive and deceitful character with this Pokemon as her main, trying to undermine both you and your best friend's efforts for her own gain. She will try to turn your best friend against you, egging him on as he questions himself of why he keeps failing where you succeeded. You will see her rise and fall, and subsequently she will make amends with you once you complete the story. This event, combined with your best friend leaving, symbolizes the act of moving on and accepting change.

Regardless, this route is the closest to the storyline of a normal Pokemon game: its main objectives being defeating the evil team and becoming the savior of the region. Once you reach the Pokemon League, you will be met with praise of your success against the villains by the Elite Four. The Champion, once defeated, will validate your status as savior of the region, and make you his successor. He takes you under his wing, and you become an iron-willed trainer upholding the values of peace and justice... perhaps a little naively, but you are beloved by many.

In the end, however, the fact that your best friend had turned his back on you still weighs heavy on your mind...

----------
NAMES
----------

Foliya comes from the Latin word 'folia,' for leaves (of a tree). 'Folia' is also the Greek word for a (bird's) nest. The 'fol' in its name may also be referring to a foal, a young horse.

Eponysus is named after the Roman goddess of horses, 'Epona,' and the Greek winged horse god, 'Pegasus.' The word 'pony' is also part of its name, which is the animal it resembles. The name itself most closely resembles 'Dionysus,' the Roman god of wine and festivals, perhaps related to the Pokemon's happy-go-lucky attitude.

Aqgrythiri is a combination of the Latin word 'aquilam,' meaning eagle, and the ancient Greek word 'thirio,' meaning beast. The 'gry' inserted in between these words may refer to it resembling a gryphon, or griffin. 'Aqgry,' may also be a misspelling of 'angry,' reflecting this Pokemon's righteous fury against those that commit evil.

---------------------------
EVOLUTION METHOD

Thank you for commenting! I always wanted a Fairy-type Pokemon that wasn't typically cute or beautiful. Its design is meant to give a sense of stability and power, a little like a Steel type.

In this way, the other two starters also have designs that contradict their secondary typing. The fire starter appears more elegant, like a Fairy-type, and the water starter is by far the most intimidating of the three, suiting the design of a Dark-type. It's little things like this that I fixate on, and I don't know why.

Glad you're here!
