Description Here's the contest piece I was talking about in my journal.
These are two main characters from a short sci-fi story written in 1951 by a very well known British sci-fi writer, who was born in 1917 and died just last year. This particular story is included in his collection of short stories.
And yes, these two strange creatures have only one hind leg, that is not a hallucination you're having! The characters names are Eris (to the right) he is the male, and has a shattered stump of a horn on his head. The female's name is Jeryl. This species (known as the Atheleni) is highly intelligent, with telepathic powers and a great understanding of the world around them, as well as curiosity.

Note: These are not my own creation, I just thought I would try and illustrate them.

Correctly guess the name of the short story and/or the author who created these and you will receive some art from me. Maybe I have not given enough hints, let me know if this is impossible....

Freaky. I was just thinking of that story. Excellent realization of Clarke's concept. Does make you wonder--is intelligence possible without manipular ability? I keep asking the dolphins, but they just seem to want another fish...

Has anyone answered/entered your contest yet to determine which author/book these critters are by/from? I just did a yahoo search for atheleni and found the author- Arthur C. Clarke, and the title of his work-"Second Dawn." Am I right? Just Curious. By the way, I love your critter desings for your story. I'm also writing a book and illustrating it. So far I have 135pgs + several illustrations. It's fun creating your critters and iterspersing them with other well known ones, or simply creating a story around one new species. Anyway, enough rambling from me for now. Keep up the great work!

It was answered already, by two separate people, I think... but yes, you are very right! Very interesting story to be sure!
Ah yes, I'm notorious for putting my species into a novel... Alas, I only have a few scenes and a storyline! I'm taking my sweet time on it.

I have a question. How do you get your line quality this good? I've been drawing all my life and I still haven't been able to get a line quality I'm happy with .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to eoghankerrigan [2009-01-28 07:38:29 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh... That's a difficult question... I just keep my wrist pretty loose, use various leads, thick and thin. I dunno... I guess I've forgotten how I learned. Hmmmmm...
Oh damn I didn't really answer your question!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eoghankerrigan In reply to pallanoph [2009-01-28 11:32:01 +0000 UTC]

>.< That's alright, but I kind of figured that I should be using more than one lead type in a drawing. And I guess all I need is more practice....so little free time though .

I almost want to say the author is Arthur C. Clarke, because I remember him dying earlier last year. : (

Anyhow~! Great piece of work, excellent movement and expression especially.

pallanoph In reply to outward [2009-01-27 01:14:06 +0000 UTC]

You are very right indeed, he has this in his collection of short stories!!!
Both questions have indeed been correctly answered: "Second Dawn" by Arthur C. Clarke. And now I wonder. Does this mean I make 2 pieces to give away??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

outward In reply to pallanoph [2009-01-27 03:05:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh no no, you don't need to give away a piece to me. I haven't read the short story this had been inspired by at all: I'm just a fan of Clarke. So I didn't answer the whole question myself. : )
