Description this is pretty much the same setup as in my previous screenshot.
only this time i took it a bit farther with the wallpaper.

it all started when i accidentially ran into this screenshot by *Psychopulse

Flower of Sounds by Pascal Ackermann

that's the name of that lady who got me carried away for the next couple of hours then.
the result is that wallpaper you see above.

i really like how she adds so much depth to my desktop.
the background is a modified version of

Concrete Evidence by ~ZombiePoppa

and if you ever wonder about what song she might be listening to
then i wouldn't be surprised if it's

I can see amazing ideas here. The back of the dock, the icons on the left, and
the wallpaper!

well, since i still don't know anything about coding to create a dock or something, it had to be the wallpaper i'm messing with.

OtisBee In reply to barberioX [2011-10-19 14:19:12 +0000 UTC]

you know, this wallpaper and current setup is the result of many months having always the same desktop, while only changing just some small detail every now and then.

it started with a dock from someone else and my attempt to create a similar and yet completely different dock that has just the same angle and drop shadow. that was months ago. i also wanted a decent tabs-like back for the icons on the left. although i started with just some square shaped holes first, i later had the idea of something more glassy. the stitched lines at the bottom and on the left came a few weeks later (as did the badge at the top right). well, you already saw my previous screenshot. i always thought i'd use a blue-ish wallpaper forever, until i found that lady and then red seemed like the only color to use.

to be honest, i'm really amazed by the result. so much so, that i just had to show it to someone. and what is nearer than showing it to the community then, right?

well, i'm glad you like this setup as much as i do. thanks for the appreciation, bro.

WOW! and I thought you couldn't customize MAC, that's the only reason I don't have a MAC!

OtisBee In reply to iareruss [2011-10-19 03:21:55 +0000 UTC]

thanks!

well, try to apply something similar like a VS or a WBtheme and you won't find any for the mac (lion).
so, you're right that it's quite a challenge to really customize a mac.

iareruss In reply to OtisBee [2011-10-19 08:23:08 +0000 UTC]

I wonder why they don't make it easier to customize anyway? Do they not believe in customization? lol... it doesn't make sense.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OtisBee In reply to iareruss [2011-10-19 13:55:40 +0000 UTC]

hmm.. i really don't know.

maybe it's just a matter of not having the right software to actually skin the mac osx.
i remember that in osx leopard (and anything before) it was indeed possible to apply various themes to the mac via apps like ShapeShifter, ThemePark and so on. but eversince the snow leopard was released they were no longer supporting it. besides, even if they would have created an app to skin snow leopard, then they had to start all over again as soon as osx lion was released only a little while later. and maybe always starting from scratch is a bit too much for a software developer, so that they eventually gave up entirely.

another reason that'd make sense is that the mac operating system has a completely different core (kernel) than windows. there's no registry in a mac and many files/processes are somewhat encapsuled and then handled by certain permissions. permissions (that when it comes to the system owned graphics files) are not that easy to obtain while at the same time the system is trying to prevent you from doing just that.

i guess that's exactly why there are only little to no risks of a viral infection. because the OS is so safe. but as a side effect it also makes tinkering with the system graphics a real challenge. a challenge that only a theme-software might be able to handle, imo. although i don't think that's going to happen at any time soon.

so, customizing just the desktop is my only option to feel myself at home then.

iareruss In reply to OtisBee [2011-10-19 17:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Well that's what I mean about customizing the desktop, I want to change that grey taskbar thing, but I just can't do it. I used a Mac once, one of my ex's had one. I can't afford a Mac, but when I was able to, I wasn't sure about getting one, and eventually settled on a PC. My cousin tries to act like he knows about Mac, but he's never used one, and will put me down on facebook about even considering getting a Mac... but personally from what I've learned from others, and from reading on the net... Mac is more secure for ME... because I'm prone to visit websites sometimes by accident that give me viruses or adware... mostly adware/spyware... and I'm about tired of it... I just wish Mac was cheaper or that I could make more money... lol - But I don't know why Apple doesn't release a program that comes with Mac OS that will make it easier for you to design things, without compromising what they have for protection.

yeah, i know what you mean when you say that the mac is all expensive and stuff. honestly, i wouldn't be a mac user, if there hasn't been this great opportunity of purchasing my current iMac for 800€ euros off the original price. it was too much of a bargain to not buy it. and frankly, i never regretted doing it. yes, it still wasn't really cheap, but what you'd get for your money is by all means worth it, imo. just imagine that with an iMac you also get an excellent led monitor. buy a monitor of that quality and a computer with the specs of an iMac and you'll likely spend the same amount of money.

but what's funny is that one of the first things i installed on that mac, was in fact a win7 partition. the fact that it's even possible to have both mac osx and win7 running at the same time, is disrupting yet another reason for not buying a mac, i think.

and personally i would never have bought my iMac, if it weren't capable of also running windows. well, what can i say? apple is creating some very fine computers and today i'd always buy one again.

The computer I have now, I'm thinking about selling and getting an iMac with the money. The first time I used an iMac at the Apple Store inside the mall was amazing... I fell in love with it. It's my dream to have one, and I hear it's better for designers anyway, and that's what I am... but mostly logo design. If I had an iMac, I probably would have a better experience with Online Collage too, I'm thinking about doing it to learn more in my field, so I can do better... since I can't code anything for the life of me, I want to be able to so I can finally have a fully working website that I manage and create myself. But for now I'm stuck with paying someone else to code for me. I love design so much that I spent an entire year doing graphics for bands on MySpace (back when it was popular), for absolutely no pay at all, completely free... just because I loved their music and I love design. But I need money now, so I have to charge for what I do, to some extent. But I do not need to be rich.

"... The first time I used an iMac at the Apple Store inside the mall was amazing... I fell in love with it ..."
i know, right?
it happened to me just the same.
i was rushing through the store and an iMac literally crossed my path making me turn around to give it a closer look immediately. for minutes i was staring at the icons and the beautiful quality of the display. unfortunately there wasn't any mouse to utilize the damn thing and make it perform something for me, but the experience has still been an amazing one.

little did i know that only a few months later i was supposed to become a mac user myself.

"... since I can't code anything for the life of me, I want to be able to so I can finally have a fully working website that I manage and create myself ..."
yep... same here.
learning some webpage coding is among the top items on my ToDo list.
or a better understanding of code in general (i.e. xml or java) so i could create more skins for more apps.

the mac, can be a fun place to either learn or perform the coding, i'd say.

"... But I need money now, so I have to charge for what I do, to some extent ..."
and that's nothing to be ashamed of or to feel insecure about.
you have something to offer and people can have it for a reasonable price.
charging for a job done is only natural and nothing really requiring further elaboration, imo.

besides, it makes others take you serious and professional.

in a way, it also makes everybody involved in the deal feel more (how shall i say?) comfortable. i mean, people who get something for free can quickly develop a feeling of "i owe you" and they might not always know how to pay you back or how to say that they have different expectations, because afterall you rarely really complain about things you got for free. at least that's what common courtesy usually demands.

i think, a contract with a proper price for your sevices could make a lot of things easier for both you and your customers.

OtisBee In reply to iareruss [2011-11-01 17:38:03 +0000 UTC]

well, that can easily be done by using html text formatting.
so, for an indent text written in italics you'd use:

<blockquote><i>"Your Text Here"</i></blockquote>
and it will display as "Your Text Here"
if you like you can also take a look at the following FAQ entry to see what else is possible

FAQ #104: What HTML formatting can we use on deviantART? And what is the format for these codes?

OtisBee In reply to PoulNyrup [2011-10-18 16:44:43 +0000 UTC]

thanks heaps, dude!!

hmm.. that's tricky, because when i first discovered that background image, i initially made it a blue-ish one with some particular layer style settings for some "inner shadow" and an off-centered radial "gradient overlay". but when i put that lady on it, i quickly figured that blue isn't the right choice there and so i added an adjustments layer on top of it all to just colorize everything to the red again. so basically it's a blue colored background turned into red again.

if you'd like the exact settings for both, i can gladly try to look it up for you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OtisBee In reply to ShaolinAssassin [2011-10-19 15:21:28 +0000 UTC]

so you're on a notebook then?

well, the good thing about a small display is that you can run everything in fullscreen, which isn't really nice on a rather large screen like mine. i mean, it's certainly great for movies and photos, but simply doesn't make sense for a web browser or music player etc.

what i do like on a display this big, is that i can have more windows open without having too much clutter on my desktop. it's funny, but you quickly accomodate to a larger display and then you don't even notice it to be that big anymore. it has just the usual size, you know.

and then when others see my monitor, they always refresh my memory when saying: "dude... that's a big screen!!"

and i say: "yes, but not too big."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShaolinAssassin In reply to OtisBee [2011-10-19 22:32:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, not on a notebook, it's far too small. I guess I said a mistake so, Im on a 15' laptop. Just sometimes I wish it was a bit bigger, esp when I have to zoom a lot when Im using photoshop. I bet you dont have this problem But for my use, its quite confortable, & i dont have so many place.

Man, could you post one day a real pic of your monitor (and maybe desk)? I really wonder to see how it looks in real, I dont remind i saw one so big.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OtisBee In reply to ShaolinAssassin [2011-10-20 03:24:59 +0000 UTC]

notebook. laptop. i think we're talking about the same thing here. the even smaller ones are called netbook here, but i know that you don't own one of those.

yeah, i already thought of maybe uploading a picture of my workspace, but my desk is almost always a mess and so i'm postponing that picture again and again.

but hey.. you can always go to a nearby apple store or to a shop that sells the 27" iMac and you'll see what i'm working on (or of course the size of it).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShaolinAssassin In reply to OtisBee [2011-10-20 07:02:34 +0000 UTC]

oh my bad, I thought you was speaking about a netbook (same name used here )
These displays are really cute, but well, doesnt fit my needs.

Of course, I could go to an apple store, but well, Im affraid
I wont find what Im searching for Im almost sure everyone
workspace says something about it's owner, so I was a bit curious
about yours. I imagine yours : modern, maybe a bit luxurious (not in bad
sense, dont misundertood me), not too busy with useful objects, and
tidy & clean. It seems Im wrong a bit about last point But well, maybe
we dont call a mess the same thing

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OtisBee In reply to ShaolinAssassin [2011-10-21 03:33:19 +0000 UTC]

hahaha.. well said, my friend.

for me, showing my workspace in public is like inviting guests to my home, so i'd better arrange everything nicely. you're right, it isn't really a mess. it's just the same feel of discomfort when someone wants to take a picture of you, when you know that the last time you looked into a mirror was 14 hours ago. for things like this i want to be prepared, you know. or else it'd feel like everything's a mess.

so, for taking a picture of my desktop it'll require some right time of the day (for maybe the sunlight throwing a nice light) and of course a camera, which i don't really have but which hopefully arrives with my new iPhone soon.

in other words, it won't be long until the occasion is right to take that picture. i'm on it and i plan on shooting a lot of photos with that new iPhone camera anyway. so why not shoot my workspace as well then, right?

well, stay tuned.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShaolinAssassin In reply to OtisBee [2011-10-23 20:26:48 +0000 UTC]

I totally understand you my friend, I would feel the same
if I had to take pics of my workspace. Lucky me, no one
is interested by it

So you finally order yourself new iPhone? congrats man, hope
you will enjoy it.

btw, I was giving a look at the new skin editor into the CAD beta3
it seems a bit better than the previous one. More friendly use.
Im getting familiar with it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OtisBee In reply to ShaolinAssassin [2011-10-24 15:36:26 +0000 UTC]

oh well, i thought about purchasing an iPhone for so long. especially when considering all the money it'll cost. but then again, i was never spending much on cars, houses, girls and what not, so in a way the iPhone is my way of having the ferrari of something.

i also like the android phones a lot, but the fact that i also call an iMac my own, makes buying an iPhone the more logical step for me to take.

yeah, the newest SkinEditor makes things a lot easier when it comes to creating skins, as it provides a much better guidance on the files and their proper naming patterns etc. and the new status bar (bottom edge of the SkinEditor) contributes even more to that with useful hints and tips on what the various items are all about.

i'm glad you find that helpful and it's great to get that feedback from you.

thanks a lot Gaetan.
