Description Ohh how I LOVED THIS SCENE from Les MisΓ©rables!!

It was so intense, the cinematography was wonderful, and the lyrics chilling...
Artistic wise, this was A LOT of fun to do... I decided to try really sharp, contrasting shading this time around; I really wanted to accentuate the intensity here, as well... contrasting conflict =contrasting colours?

I really wanted to capture that look of... doubt, fear, anxiety, and overall feeling of looking into one's past only to find all the skeletons in the closet... that expression... it was tough to do... I'm happy enough with it.

SO! Rather than type out what's going on here, I'm just gonna be lazy and copy and paste two paragraphs from this chapter in the book... it was a long enough chapter and really delved into Javert's inner struggle...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jean Valjean disconcerted him. All the axioms which had served him as points of support all his life long, had crumbled away in the presence of this man. Jean Valjean's generosity towards him, Javert, crushed him. Other facts which he now recalled, and which he had formerly treated as lies and folly, now recurred to him as realities. M. Madeleine re-appeared behind Jean Valjean, and the two figures were superposed in such fashion that they now formed but one, which was venerable. Javert felt that something terrible was penetrating his soul--admiration for a convict. Respect for a galley-slave--is that a possible thing? He shuddered at it, yet could not escape from it. In vain did he struggle, he was reduced to confess, in his inmost heart, the sublimity of that wretch. This was odious.
A benevolent malefactor, merciful, gentle, helpful, clement, a convict, returning good for evil, giving back pardon for hatred, preferring pity to vengeance, preferring to ruin himself rather than to ruin his enemy, saving him who had smitten him, kneeling on the heights of virtue, more nearly akin to an angel than to a man. Javert was constrained to admit to himself that this monster existed.
Things could not go on in this manner.

ASDFGHJK I LOVE IT!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the song too --> [link]
NOTE: This song has the EXACT SAME tempo, context (looking over one's life), and even certain lyrics as Valjean's Soliloquy because... well, they BOTH look over their life and BOTH don't like the mistakes they've made... Valjean faces his demons and decides to change... Javert on the other hand... well... let's just say, this song = DOES NOT COMPUTE!!

Javert:
Who is this man?
What sort of devil is he?
To have me caught in a trap
And choose to let me go free?
It was his hour at last
To put a seal on my fate
Wipe out the past
And wash me clean off the slate
All it would take was a flick of his knife
Vengeance was his and he gave me back my life!

Damned if I'll live in the debt of a thief!
Damned if I'll yield at the end of the chase!
I am the law and the law is not mocked!
I'll spit his pity right back in his face!
There is nothing on Earth that we share!
It is either Valjean or Javert!

Me: Ohhhh boy... (totally knows what's coming... lolz)

Javert:
And my thoughts fly apart
Can this man be believed?
Shall his sins be forgiven?
Shall his crimes be reprieved?

And must I now begin to doubt,
Who never doubted all those years?
My heart is stone, and still it trembles
The world I have known is lost in shadow
Is he from heaven or from hell?
And does he know?
That granting me my life today...
This man has killed me... even so...

Me: Whew... here we go... (is loving the music; so chilling!)

Javert:
I am reaching... but I fall...
And the stars are black and cold...
As I stare into the void...
Of a world that cannot hold...
I'll escape now, from that world
From the world of Jean Valjean
There is no where I can turn
There is no way to go on!

Me: Down he goes...
Here comes the splash...

...

CRACK
Me: ASDHFJG OH MY GAH-HAAAA!!!
Ohhh, MAN! MOVIE!
Y U DO THAT?!
Y U MAKE ME JUMP?!?!
I TOTALLY wasn't expecting that!!
Eggh... like a freaking accordean... owwww

*shivers*

Anywho, please comment and enjoy!

Did you see the Nostal Critic's thoughts on this scene?

Yes, I did.
And though he brings up many valid points, I respectfully disagree
I mean, it's not as vocally jarring and heartbreaking as , but... the look on his face and the "weakness" in his voice (as I interpret it) speaks the idea of him just being so tired; he's spent his WHOLE life believing this and it all changes; hits him like a ton of bricks and he's bewildered... it matches more-so in the book; the idea that he wasn't loud about it, but he looked terrible, fraught, weak and scared.

But to each their own; it wasn't as great as it could have been, but if for whatever reason book-Javert started singing to communicate, this is what I'd imagine lol
btw I frigging LOVED the Critic's review of this movie. Had me laughing so much His parody of One Day More, which is my favourite song in the show, was my favourite song in the review!

What I know you and I both agreed with was the sound effect for the splash, right?

What do you mean by that?

Fail-Seeker In reply to MegBeth [2016-06-05 16:56:42 +0000 UTC]

That it was a CRACK sound and not a SPLASH! LOL!!!

MegBeth In reply to Fail-Seeker [2016-06-05 17:15:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I think in the book he splashed, but I can't remember for sure... if it indicated that he hit a shallow end... not that anyone would see, but... whatever

I prefer the splash, but the crack meant he was DEAD; INSTANTLY.
I always imagined jumping into a river to off a character... wouldn't that take a minute, at least? Would he really want to linger around for that long? Granted, the Sein is a pretty damn fast moving river, but still...

I was all like, "Really? Really? That was best sound effect they could come up with?" Like Paw said. Way to kill him off with dignity, like Owen said. Like the NC said, what otherΒ cartoon sounds (including SPLAT, GONG, THUD, SMASH, POINK, and Wilkinson saying, "Ho-ome?") do you think we could put in there toΒ up the drama?

Pfft... dignity... he was gonna jump in a raging river
He lost his dignity (at least, for me) when he was in Valjean's grasp and still wanted to tell him off and saying how "right" he was... that's not dignified; that's petulant and childish lol
Like I said, I still love the review to pieces, even if I disagree at certain points
That "Ho-ome" part made me laugh so hard, omg

Dignity for the actor, I mean. Like Javert had any dignity. Just, do you agree the sound effect for Javert's death kinda ruined what was supposed to be an emotional scene?

MegBeth In reply to Fail-Seeker [2017-02-11 11:36:47 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh haahaha... my bad
It didn't ruin it for me; the instrumentals, cinematography and the song itself is still emotional but it was... DEFINITELY jarring and a bit too loud

How can I now allow this man
To hold dominion over me?
This desperate man that I have hunted
He gave me my life
He gave me freedom
I should have perished by his hand
It was his right
It was my right to die as well,
Instead I live, but live in hell...

I loved that line SO FRIGGING MUCH!
wish they didn't remove it from the film... butΒ  can still sing it with this part too!

Oh gosh this is so well drawn The emotion is so raw and gah, you captured the scene so perfectly!

Awww thank you SO much...
that expression of his was fun (if that sounds horrible or cruel, I do appologize lolz)

But yeah thanks again. I really appreciate it

hehe no it's really fun to draw all kinds of expressions! Yep, even the really horrific and upsetting ones
No problem!

Good
'Cause, yeah the guy was a dink-wad, but I still felt bad enough for him

Amg the most fun expressions are the extreme ones; that push the very fabric of being humanly possible

lol

YES I COMPLETELY AGREE It's just so fun to push the limits of the face and being very expressive!

First time I went to see this, I nearly cried during this scene. Second time, I closed my eyes but I could still hear that crack. Gives me the chills every time....

MegBeth In reply to sumerjoy11 [2013-03-04 02:42:30 +0000 UTC]

I felt bad for him too... like... I didn't cry but I genuinely felt bad for him; sucks that as the antithesis of Valjean he can't change his ways... but... what're you gonna do?

Oh, that crack TOTALLY caught me off guard; as I hinted in the description (my "dialogue" was what was literally going through my mind), all the other movie renditions I've seen involve a huge splash either on or off screen and then nothing comes up... which is fine enough and that's what I was expecting with this; that cracl... ahh gawsh...
Made me jump (as well as a few others) and... ugh...

I felt bad for him as well. Seriously, I didn't think that showing him commit suicide could scare me anymore than it did till I heard that crack.
