I think homelessness, or being unfortunate like so, is an important issue, not only in the US, but everywhere. This is a beautiful photo of something ugly, if you get what I mean by that.
it really makes you think...
The grain is very nice indeed...

I'm more for helping the Dog, man. The owner can ask for change, the dog just gets kicked around. Both are bad really and we SHOULD do something about it. Need to buy less trivial things just to make our bathrooms look better or whatnot and put the money where it belongs.

the dogs owner was a loving woman.. who probably put more money towards feeding her animals than feeding herself. she certainly wasnt drinking booze..
case by case my friend.. dont jump to so many conclusions.

its sad, but I really like
how you are caring for the "less fortunate"
and putting it out there, it sure got me thiniking...
but very good idea, too bad there werent more
people who care.
btw- very cute picture of the dog!

Emphasis here is sure on the dog! Anyway, for me, this makes me think about how the homeless and buskers use dogs as guiltrippers for people, saying "look i have a dog who will also suffer if you dont give any money"

Some people aren't reading. Yes, the dog is sad, it's heartbreaking. Sometimes we feel more comfortable exercising compassion towards animals, or cute things in general such as a big eyed child on an AIDS poster (who, don't get me wrong, need all the help they can get). I have seen homeless people who take more care to make sure their pets are warmer than themselves. We should take a selfless cue from them and help out.
Wonderful shot, by the way.

Well You know what, Im more worried about the poor doggy than his owner. Poor poor animal, the human will probably leave him one day just ta have a less troublesome life.

There's a lot of homeless people near where I go to school. For a while, one of the students we knew had willingly left housing and became homeless. He still came to school anyway, and he was creepy and he smelled bad. Seriously, there was something wrong with that boy. He took baths with wetnaps.
Being around homeless people so much has made me more cynical about the whole thing, really. Lovely shot regardless, though.

more cynical?
thats really unfortunate.
there are homeless by choice.. i think its quite a noble statement.
homelessness is as much a disease as anything else.. consider you just happen to wake up everyday on the street battling schizophrenia.

I've worked in a nursing home before, and dealt with patients who had Alzheimer's and Dementia. I only have the vaguest idea what that is like. Not all the homeless are schizophrenic, I've noticed, although my best friend from New York gleefully tells me stories of some of the more interesting homeless people he's met. Apparently, everything's more interesting in New York.
However, the kid I was referring to was not schizophrenic, at least from what I could tell, but there was something wrong with him. It's like he was loud and friendly, but he was too loud and too friendly to the point where you'd feel threatened by him, and with me being a girl, it was just worse. It's like he'd get too close to me and sirens would go off in my head. I wasn't sure if he was just slow or if he was just completely social inept and unaware of physical boundaries. It was just creepy, and upon finding out he slept in the Metro station, it just sort of... set me off. Meh. He finally ended up transferring to another school, and I'll admit I was kind of glad. I guess I felt pity for him in a way, but in all honesty, he chose to sleep in the metro station because he didn't like his roommates. He may have been a little off mentally, but he certainly wasn't schizophrenic. I know that much. Since it was his choice, I can't say I felt sorry for him. Maybe it was just because I didn't like him. Meh.

*sighs* yes i deal with things like this all the time. people can be so heartless to animals sometimes. if they're not abandoning them when the finally realize that it's a lot of work raising a puppy, then they are just down right neglecting them . i once saw a dog come into the shelter i worked at with his choke collar grown into his neck, and he had gone blind in both his eyes because his hair had been matted on top of them for so long. he was half-starved too... wonderful shot though. you captured the sadness perfectly

im sorry.. this may sound very.. well.. offensive
what about the people? dogs ran wild once.. they died. bears die in the woods. birds get shot by texans.
what about the people?
this shot isnt about the dog. its about the dogs owner. the dog was fine.
its 20 degrees outside and theres snow on the ground.

oh... sorry i didn't mean it that way. i must of got the wrong idea from the photo. i thought the dog was left in a box. yes i do agree dogs ran wild once, as many still do. i only meant those domesticated animals who have lost their instinct. as far as people go, i care just as much from them as well. yo're talking to a person who lives in in one of the most poverty-stricken cities in the US. i see poor homeless people all the time, and i try to help. I even got to together with a group of friends and made a documentary about it to spread knowledge and concern in my subarban community. so yeah, don't get the wrong idea about what i said.

is this a digital or film shot? If film, a bit of spot toning the white specks that are on it, and you'd have an even stronger photo. If digital, just take it into an editing program and use the healing brush for them.

darkroom sucks.
this is a scan from negative. there was far too much clone stamping to be done.. and i didnt want to alter the image.
what actually happened was i shot it at some rediculously fast aperture, probably 2.8, during the daytime.. with like a 125. when im walking around int he day i'm almost always @ 125/11.. so yeah, i had to hit the levels.. something i hate to do on my leica stuff.. if i cant nail exposures, i shouldnt be shooting one.
anyway.. spot toning is a pain. i spend far too much time in the darkroom, and its consumed me!
