Description Visiting LNER A4 no. 4464 Bittern makes the most of the exceptionally good March weather as she glides across Bewdley Viaduct, on the Severn Valley Railway, with the northbound leg of a photo charter. Those people who bought places on this train must be absolutely delighted with their decision! She is hauling the SVR's rake of eight Gresley teak coaches, the longest such set in preservation; I believe the gala was the first time a garter blue A4 had hauled one in more than 60 years.

Looks exceptionally good with traditional LNER wooden bodied rolling stock I have to say. A real throwback to the 1930s when these engines were in their prime.

Put it this way... most people thought this combination was easily the star of the gala -- a gala with 828 in attendance.

Those carriages must be expensive to maintain!

Absolutely. One of the carriages had to be completely restored on arrival at the SVR a decade or so ago, and that cost about £160,000 just for that single vehicle.

Yep, having annexed Worcestershire from the GWR.

That really is such an unusual looking train, and a very nice shade of blue. But I also really like the carriages. Not sure why - there's just something quite appealing about them!

The loco and the carriages do add up to a very attractive train, in my and most other people's opinion!

Yep, that's pretty much what everyone who's seen Bittern on the teaks has said!

Cool shot! Almost looks like someone's home layout, especially the cars!

Thank you! And yeah, it does have a bit of a toylike look to it. I wonder whether anyone's done a tilt-shift photo of this set during the gala.
