Description New and improved!

All of the color guides are getting a revamp, and Twilight is the first to go. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

Those hex codes ARE the RGB codes. Those very same that give colors to websites and SVGs.

Why are the colours for the digital and the print different?

It's the same color as the purple in her cutie mark, except it's transparent.

The small circles next to the hex codes don't have the colours the hex codes say (at least, according to inkscape), and the colour for shadow outlines (like, the one right in the image on Twilight's right hind leg.) isn't defined either.
Thanks though, still helpful.

Are there any specific programs that work with this better--like PhotoShop and the like? My brother is curious since he's branching out how to do things.

I really enjoy looking at this in-depth guide--it's useful to have the certain colors since it's kind of hard at times figuring out which ones are suitable. Thanks for this.

I need serious help. How do I use this as a color guide in MS paint? I can't get the file, just the text document I don't really understand the description too well...

kefkafloyd In reply to xXSomeRandomDudeXx [2013-07-14 00:18:00 +0000 UTC]

Your browser should save a PDF, or you can just type the equivalents into the color picker into MS paint.

xXSomeRandomDudeXx In reply to kefkafloyd [2013-07-14 00:20:25 +0000 UTC]

It did, but I saved it, and it opens up in Adobe Reader. Is that supposed to happen?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to xXSomeRandomDudeXx [2013-07-14 01:31:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes. That way you can copy and paste the codes into the hex field in the color picker.

xXSomeRandomDudeXx In reply to kefkafloyd [2013-07-14 01:37:30 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Paint supports that. It has all these different 3 digit codes. Any suggestions?

TH0RLEIF In reply to xXSomeRandomDudeXx [2013-07-14 15:52:34 +0000 UTC]

MS Paint sucks.
I know, that's no answer to your question, but I would highly recommend you have a look at paint.net , it's basically an improved version of MS Paint.
If you absolutely want to use it, you can use this tool to convert the color codes .

The thing is, I use MS paint to make/use bases, because everybody has Paint, so everybody can use it XD But that color converter really helped me! Thanks again^^ I think I might just use more of your color guides ^^

TH0RLEIF In reply to xXSomeRandomDudeXx [2013-07-14 19:35:37 +0000 UTC]

You can save ond open PNG files in any graphics software, not only Paint.
So you are free to use whatever program provides the best features for what you do (which is probably not Paint). If you use a tablet for drawing, you might want to try PaintTool SAI .
Of course you can also continue using Paint, if you're happy with it.

xXSomeRandomDudeXx In reply to TH0RLEIF [2013-07-14 19:52:56 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I do use painttool SAI =] (And a tablet )
I just use paint for the pixel bases/dolls ^^
Thanks for the suggestions though!

I've used your v2.0 guides to remake my Unofficial Soundtrack CD covers as vectors. They are greatly improved as a result of your hard work. Thanks!

I have made palettes for Expression Design, GIMP/Inkscape and plan to make some for Photoshop as well. I'll make these available for download in my SkyDrive public folder as they become available.

PaulCoddington [2013-07-04 07:11:09 +0000 UTC]

For some reason, all the version 2.0 PDFs are not thumbnailed correctly in Windows Explorer with Fast Picture Viewer Codec Pack installed (they turn out really tiny with lots of whitespace). However, all the version 1.0 PDFs thumbnail OK.

Is there a reason for using PDF over a lossless image format such as PNG/TIFF?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to PaulCoddington [2013-07-05 00:38:46 +0000 UTC]

They print nicer, both files are contained in one file, and browsers generally do not handle CMYK images properly. For the print guides, the latter is very important.

I'm unsure why the 2.0 ones thumbnail that way, I'm guessing Microsoft is thumbnailing them incorrectly. Not the first time they would make such a mistake.

You can always rasterize the PDFs, by the way. Just drag them into PS, pick a page, rasterize and save and you'll have an image. I do this, in fact, when I work with them in PS.

PaulCoddington In reply to kefkafloyd [2013-07-05 07:52:47 +0000 UTC]

I'll get the codec developer to look into it. I just wanted to touch base with you first in case the problem was something PDF-related that you recognized.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to PaulCoddington [2013-07-05 11:38:06 +0000 UTC]

Usually the reason why that happens is because the program that reads the PDF reads the wrong box information or does not respect the Meda Box's true bounds.

My brain, why is there two color versions? why not just use the second one, it's nicer.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to darkstarchan [2013-04-19 20:49:04 +0000 UTC]

Because colors are different on TV and print. There's demand for colors that are exactly ones used in the flash assets versus the ones used in the print/merchandise art. They both have their use.

I look at the digital palette and it feels like it's really excessively neon-y, but when I check it against screenshots, it's totally accurate. Weird! Maybe it's because the background isn't actually a mass of bright pastels.

In any event, very nice!

Any application worth its salt should have an eyedropper that you can click on the individual swatch colors and pull the color.
