Description So...6 months and over 880 pageviews later, I have completed ~miserybahamut 's kiriban prize! It is a green-eyed friesian mare on a wintery backdrop, if you can't tell
The final photoshop image, if you're curious, was 94.1 MB (not my biggest), and 77 layers (possibly my biggest). Detail of the head is here if you're interested - see all the little details you missed!
So yeah, Hallie, I'm so sorry it took so long! If y'all want to laugh at my hideous slowness, here's a quote from the note she sent me requesting it back in november, with the embarassing bit in bold: "But if I can have one more thing I would love for the scene to be winterish. To go with the upcoming season. That is if you don't mind."
Yeah, I suck
Thanks for being such a great requester, Hallie; you were so patient and kind
So much fun doing this after the shading; I was essentially straying into uncharted territory, as I've never highlighted a horse all shiny like that, and it's been so long since I last did clouds that I practically had to learn from scratch...I hate large cloud formations. >_<
But all in all, I'm actually really proud of this - I hope you like it, Hallie!
Please full view? The preview looks yucky.

Edit: Oh dear, I spelt friesian wrong all this time... O.o

This disappeared from my favorites. :C I have no idea why this keeps happening!

Ohmygod, this! Gosh, I'll never forget this. Marked a big step in my horse drawing abilities, so thank you for getting me to draw it ♥ I've since moved my ponies on, of course, as befitting the 6-year gap, but I still like this. x3

Beautiful! Not just saying that cause my character is a black Friesian with green eyes either. Lol. Mines a stallion though. ^_^

Woah. This is probably one of the best digital pictures I have ever seen on deviantart, and I'm not joking.
I absolutly love the mare, she looks so sleek and shiny! Honestly I have never seen highlights done that way before.
77 layers? Dang... I've had photoshop for months now and I still don't understand layers at all. I just draw it all on one. My sister says I'm retarded because I'm making it harder on myself
Anyhows amazing work! Definatly a favorite!!!

Wow, thank you very much for the praise - and the nice long comment
I'm glad you like it - it was very much a new technique in horse colouring for me, so I'm glad you think it worked! Though I must say, it probably isn't a new technique for a lot of other people. If you want shiny, absolutely stunning horses, I recommend you check out =Losmios and also *rewston , who both do stunning equine art.
Layers are the most useful things ever invented; they really do make everything ten times easier and more forgiving. Try finding a tutorial on them; either through dA or google, as they will help a lot
77 layers is no longer my greatest number; Customisation has since taken over with 286 I would never have been able to do that without layers, certainly.
Thanks again, and thanks for faving!

:tries to regain breath:

This, my very good friend, is absolutely wonderful. Seventy-seven layers? Oh my goodenss, if I would have known! I feel bad for making you do so much work, but this is so beautiful. Oh my goodness. I love the way you worked with the snow around the legs, and the solf background period with this strong foreground subject. You did wonderfully using cool colors with the neutral of the horse. Ah, those green eyes go sooo well with the coolness, never breaking it up for a bit. I really love how you did the anatomy. Every detail is mind boggling, and just wonderful. The highlights on the fur look so real, it is mind boggling. The mane and tail really add movement in this peice, along with the kicked up snow. This picture has so much life into it. This picture is a blessing to me.

Thank you SO very much hun. I absolutely adore this with all my heart, and it is now my wallpaper.

Maah, don't feel bad! I had so much fun doing this you can't believe it Like I said, it made me stretch my artistic abilities, so I'm really happy with it. I had fun with a scatter custom brush on the flying snow, though in retrospect it probably should have been less blurry.
I was also going for using colour environment properly - cool shadows and warm highlights - I hope it worked
I am so pleased that you like the highlights - I've never done them properly shiny like that, so I had to use a lot of references. My pose reference didn't have the lighting I wanted, so I had to make up the positions of the highlights and pray it worked. I scrapped one set, moved to a different set of references and did the current set.
Also glad you like the movement - working with thick pen lines including the hair areas scares me sometimes, because the lines can sometimes restrict the flow of the hair. So if you reckon it gives it movement, I'm happy
Goodness me, thank you very much! Thank you for faving it, and I really feel truly honoured to have you make it your wallpaper

I am so happy that you enjoyed doing it! That makes the piece worth so much more to you and to the viewer! The highlights worked wonderfully, and the depth of the shadows was amazing. You need not worry about any mistakes, I swear I can find not one. I thank you, I thank you, I thank you!

Each piece I do advances my art in some way, but I think this one had the equivalent value of about 5 - so I thank you for giving me such a rewarding subject to draw!

I thought the clouds there turned out great though!! They look loads better than mine anyway, since mine tend to look more like the smokescreen of Satan or something. XD I liked how you made those hoof prints in the snow too! Looks neat though, where it looks like it's changing from summer to winter somehow? Dunno if that's what you intended, but cool all the same to me! XD All in all, I'm damn well going to fave!

KatsBrain In reply to Hey-Poo-Guy [2006-04-29 12:10:47 +0000 UTC]

Aww thanks! I had to redo the really big cloud at one point because it looked atrocious....But I bet my early clouds are a billion times worse than yours! (Actually, take any of the other clouds in my gallery....soooo bad.)
Interesting that you liked the hoofprints - they were kind of a quick afterthought near the end...ah well, glad they work!
Mrrr...."changing from summer to winter"? I'm not sure what you mean by that....
And thank you for faving! (And for being one of the few who comments when they fave )

Hey-Poo-Guy In reply to KatsBrain [2006-04-30 02:21:22 +0000 UTC]

The top of the image looks bright and sunny as if in summer.. or even spring. ^^ Yet between the image, it looks as if it's shifting more towards winter, with the snow blowing and settling on the ground and such.. I dunno, that's what I thought. xD

I wouldn't have noticed hoofprints needed in the snow until you added them there! Some anal-retentive wackos would've gone insane about it, I bet. XD;; Hrmm, I'll check them out now while I still remember! XD Dunno about your clouds worse than mine though... I haven't touched on clouds for months! Since I hate them like rotten fried fish.

MOre than welcome! Still irks the begeezus out of me when people just fave and fave without feedback or very little of it.

KatsBrain In reply to Hey-Poo-Guy [2006-05-01 17:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, right, I see. I was just going for a sunny spring day somewhere very cold, so it was bright and sunny but still snowy, so maybe that's what it comes from
Yeah, some people really have to get every single detail down, and if it's that kind of image then okay, but half the time I probably wouldn't notice an absence
Hum...last clouds I painted manually were in....uh...Femeref Dragon . Baaaaaad. Before that, they were like the ones in Ruby as an Alicorn ; just fluff with no definition. Alas.
Oh god yes; that's one of the things that really annoys me...I've now added a link at the top of my journal to How to +fav Deviations the Right Way by ~zlistrockstar in the hopes that people will...maybe...read it and take notice. One can only hope.

it looks fabulous though, i love it!

Hehe, well I guess that's testimony to how you don't need to use layers - you just do it straight off
Thank you very much - glad you like it

Very nice. The musculature is very well done, ane I love how it is a crisp, snow-covered background, with the snow being kicked up. Looks good!

Thank you very much! I referenced quite heavily for the pose and muscles, so I'm glad they came out well
Unfortuately, the kicked snow hides her legs, which I quite like, but I couldn't just miss out the snow, and I like the effect anyway.
Thanks once again!
