A TLK 2 character of mine.

Berlin was originally the older brother of Mufasa and Taka (what Scar was originally called). One day, while all three were walking near the ravine (where Mufasa was later killed by Scar), poachers arrived in the Pridelands, seeking lions. Being much larger than his two brothers, who were still young cubs, a juvenile adult Berlin (he was named differently back then - I just don't know what) picked them up and ran from the poachers. After some time, they were beginning to catch up, and Berlin was tiring quickly. There were about three jeeps on their tail (scuse the pun), and they were all headed towards a bend in the ravine that would corner them; they were as good as caught. It was either certain death or uncertain death. So Berlin leapt over the edge.
Trying to keep two cubs dangling from your mouth safe whilst being battered by rocky outcrops, falling boulders and scree and whilst anticipating your own death is a tricky thing, but Berlin managed it somehow, and landed with his head held as high as it could and his legs stretched out beneath him, which were promptly crushed by the impact. Lying in agony on the ravine floor, he told Mufasa and Taka, who were relatively unhurt, to get back to the pride quickly but unseen and warn them. He told Mufasa that he was the heir to the throne now and that he would have to take care of Taka. Then he fell unconscious, something that looked to the cubs like death.
The cubs successfully warned the pride of the poachers and broke the news of Berlin's supposed death. Ahadi, their father, wanted to go back to find his eldest son but, to cut a long story short, abandoned the idea and moved the pride out of the area. Mufasa eventually forgot that he had ever had an older brother, and certainly the whole incident, but Taka never did. Possibly where he got the idea of Mufasa's overthrowing from - older brother plunges off cliff to protect something he loves, younger brother advances via dead lion's paws. (You know, that only just occurred to me.)
Only a day after hitting the ravine floor, Berlin was found and taken to a research lab, where he was treated: his legs reconstructed and stitched back up (albeit crudely) and the cuts and bruises he sustained patched up, involving the removal of most of his mane, which has since grown back, though shorter and more haphazard. This process took some time (during which he was named Berlin), and he was put into suspended animation for a lot of it (except the injuries...it's complicated). As a result, he is chronologically older than Mufasa would have been (and Sarabi is), and certainly a lot older than Simba; but physically he is somewhere in between Kiara and Simba.
He used to be striking - with piercing green eyes and a rich chocolate brown mane - he still is: now two ugly scars dominate his forelegs and his mane is short and uneven. Simba took a lot of persuading that he was his uncle
