Description Yes, =Industrial180 ’s Gin strikes again, despite me not having finished the first one of him. Don’t worry; it will be done I using Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Greenday for the inspiration, from back when her competition specified songs. I used hard black shading for an attempt at a dramatic touch, and also to save me time…back when there was a deadline. I like the way that came out, though.
Gin is actually crying there, if you couldn’t tell that was a tear, lmao.
Background is dscn0063 by ~binghamton after fiddling a bit.
Gin is © =Industrial180
Image is © me (=apocalypsebunny )
Edit: I changed the tear a bit; hopefully it now looks more like one

I love the atmosphere--the monochrome colours, the placement of the text, the way the lion's been shaded...pretty much everything that's already been said, but it bears saying again. The anatomy's spot-on, too. I draw lions with alarming regularity and I still haven't managed to pin it down nearly as well. XD

In addition to that and the contrast between the blacks and pale greys, the pose is so expressive; it has character and motion, and, overall, I'd definitely say that you've succeeded in making it look dramatic.

I'm glad I stumbled over this; it always makes my day to run across such fabulous art.

Thank you very much for your excellent comment! I don't mind if things have been said; everyone has a different view of every image, so say whatever you have to say! I'm very flattered by all the positive feedback I've had on this image; it was very much an experiment in many things, so it's great to find it's succeeded. ^__^
And on your lions, I beg to differ! You do them stylised yet with a highly realistic base, and your anatomy is far superior to mine, especially in your most recent works. The facial structure, which I struggled with a lot, you seem to have down as an art, and I am deeply envious of your paws. Why am I saying this here? I'll go comment.
Once again, thank you so much for your kind words and well-thought-out comment - it's very much appreciated

Whenever I sit down to comment on something, I try to state exactly what I liked about the image--the anatomy, lighting, and so on. It's hard to do consistently since I don't have a lot of free time nowadays, but if I can I like to write something more in-depth than 'Nice' or whatever. I'm glad to know it's appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, what did you use to do the lineart for this image? It looks very smooth and consistent, which I've only ever been able to do in a vector program like Flash, so if you used Photoshop or something, I'm amazed.

My only criticism, I think, is the tear that others have mentioned--it's insanely hard for me to do them, too, and it must be even harder because your palette is all in greys and blacks, but I think that part of the problem may be that the positioning doesn't look quite right. It seems like it should follow the slope of the muzzle more, if that makes any sense? I don't know if it does, since I can't really Google up a reference picture.

Once again, though, I love the atmosphere you created with this. Overall, it's a superb image.

I'm the same on comments, though I too haven't had the time to do much lately...(which is why my message centre is somewhat exploding ) I always try for at least a few lines-worth of comment, even on something that somebody showed me over msn and that I've already declared a liking for I could never stand to leave a comment as short as "nice"; whenever I get one of those it just leaves me thinking "Yes? And...?" You might be able to see in my sig that I do love receiving and swapping long comments.
The lineart for this one was...traditional I think. Yes, it was quite basic with uniform thickness, whereas I usually vary line density, because I knew I was going to use black shadows, so you wouldn't be able to tell. The lineart isn't the...er...cleanest I've done. Luckily it's zoomed out. The shadows aren't part of the lineart; they were just painted on in PS, in case you meant that, too.
Sometimes I use the pen tool in photoshop for my lines like in Customisation , or just a brush like in The Voices of the Mountains , but my overwhelming favourite is traditional inking that's been cleaned and touched up in PS
Ahh, you're totally totally right about the tear; it seems to be the bane of my life. I think you're right about making it follow the slope of the muzzle more; I think my problem was that I really didn't - and don't - know the anatomy of lions' faces well at all, so making a foreign body (ie the tear) follow said anatomy was...difficult. O.o I think if I ever acquire the courage to revisit the tear again, I'll apply your advice Thank you for both that and the excellent comment!

First off, I'm sorry it took me so long to reply! I've been having some trouble with my internet cutting out at random times, and it seems to love doing so when I'm trying to get caught up with my comments. I'm also a bit pressed for time since I have a test to study for, so I'm going to try and respond to everything that's appeared in my message centre pretty quickly.

The parts of the lineart that aren't covered by shadows look very smooth, so I suppose that's all that matters. I'm impressed that you're able to make traditional inking blend so well with a digital image; touched up in Photoshop or not, whenever I've tried to combine the two it always looks very, ah, unique.

And you're quite welcome. I can't imagine it would be easy to make the tear follow his muzzle, anyway, with the strong shadows; it would probably look odd. Still, that's the first thing that came to mind when I looked at it.

Noo, don't worry about reply-times! I totally sympathise with both a temperamental internet and being eyeball-deep in school work, so don't you worry; I'll still be here.
Once again, thanks very much on the lines; I use every trick I can to try and make it look as much as possible like digital inking without actually redoing the whole darn lot, so I guess it's paid off
You may be right about the difficulty of altering the tear with black and white shading, and I must say it's highly unlikely that I'll go anywhere near the psd of this image again. But I do appreciate the input, and I'll definitely try to take it into account more the next time it comes up

I love the imagery of the deserted city street and the lion walking alone, with head bowed and a tear streaming down one eye. Its stirring and evocative. I captures such a sense of sad, lonely impotence. They essence of the lyrics that no matter how many friends and loved ones we ever have, we always at some point find ourselves meandering down a deserted avenue, sad, lonely and bereft. And with my namesake I of course find an especial meaning there... as I have over the years watched the friends and family die or slowly fade away as they are wont to do.

Wow, thank you for the excellent comment! I love receiving comments, especially ones where someone has clearly put a lot of thought into them, so I'm sorry for replying so late - partly due to an evil art exam and partly due to wanting to appreciate your comment fully
I'm really happy you liked the piece, especially its atmosphere; that was what I was trying to concentrate on in the shading style I used, which was very different to my usual approach. I'm glad you could take something away from it, but I'm ever so sorry for your losses It's not really my place to comment, but it must have been hard; I'm sorry.

SteelLion In reply to KatsBrain [2007-03-26 19:34:43 +0000 UTC]

You're most welcome. The level of work you do deserves more than just a few lines. I figure that if I am going to bother to say something about someone's art/literature/photos then it should be something meaningful that will either help or encourage them more than just going yay team. I am glad that you appreciated what I had to say. Just know that to many the works you create are more than pictures but commentaries on life that in many cases can have a deep personal connection to the viewer. That's an amazing thing that can not be rewarded or appreciated enough.

Thank you for your kind words as well, it was hard and still is on so many levels but seeing something like your drawing makes the times that you are walking that deserted blvd maybe a little less lonely knowing that someone else out there can see and know exactly what you are feeling at that moment and turn it into something beautiful.

You are very kind I do agree, though it's been a while since I've been able to comment regularly, that it's nice to see meaning in art, and when I did comment - I will get back to it - I always tried to give meaningful comments with constructive critique that were of decent length. It's the do unto your neighbour what you would have done to you thing; I love receiving those comments, so I try to give them.
I think so many people out there have experienced similar things; there are always more who understand than you think or want to think, especially at the time, but you just have to look around.
I'm glad my art could do this for you

I am deeply honored that my words meant that much to you. Its nice to know that you feel the same way about comments and such. I ripped my fiction off my gallery for just that reason. Your picture came to me at a time when I felt truly alone and cast adrift. It really helped lift me out of a bad sort of slump. I can't tell you how much I needed that and then your picture was right there. it was just amazing. Like divine coincidence... what do they call it? Serendipity?

This is beautiful! Wonderful shading and contrast, background blurred to make the foreground look sharper. The emotion is very strong as well, and the lyrics just add to it. I feenk you're awesome! The muscle definition in the drawing of Gin is really good, too. I wish I could draw like that.

lazarusmumble [2007-01-16 21:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Ok, you wanted a long comment. I'll try my best.

I like the picture because of the idea. Normally, for stuf like this, people use horses, people, and other things like this. A lion is good because it summons up the idea of a great hero laid low, cast away by the crowd, disgusted at his weakness.
The contrast between blurry photograph of a street and cartoon black and white lion is also a good idea. Instead of looking like just an average emo picture, the lion (Not an emo animal) creates a deeper, more fundamental metaphore for depression and rejection.

There. Like it?

Wow, that's really pretty! I love how it's all in black and white and grey and the blurred quality of the background and the lights.
The shading on the Lion is great too!

Though the tear doesn't look much like a tear to me, more like a scar, I think it's because of the clear outline.
And something about the placement of the right backleg bothers me. I think because it's lowest point is lower than the left backleg's, if you see what I mean.
It looks as if he's almost crossing his legs to me.

Apart from that though, great job.
He looks very sad.
