Whenever I sit down to comment on something, I try to state exactly what I liked about the image--the anatomy, lighting, and so on. It's hard to do consistently since I don't have a lot of free time nowadays, but if I can I like to write something more in-depth than 'Nice' or whatever. I'm glad to know it's appreciated.
Just out of curiosity, what did you use to do the lineart for this image? It looks very smooth and consistent, which I've only ever been able to do in a vector program like Flash, so if you used Photoshop or something, I'm amazed.
My only criticism, I think, is the tear that others have mentioned--it's insanely hard for me to do them, too, and it must be even harder because your palette is all in greys and blacks, but I think that part of the problem may be that the positioning doesn't look quite right. It seems like it should follow the slope of the muzzle more, if that makes any sense? I don't know if it does, since I can't really Google up a reference picture.
Once again, though, I love the atmosphere you created with this. Overall, it's a superb image.

I'm the same on comments, though I too haven't had the time to do much lately...(which is why my message centre is somewhat exploding ) I always try for at least a few lines-worth of comment, even on something that somebody showed me over msn and that I've already declared a liking for I could never stand to leave a comment as short as "nice"; whenever I get one of those it just leaves me thinking "Yes? And...?" You might be able to see in my sig that I do love receiving and swapping long comments.
The lineart for this one was...traditional I think. Yes, it was quite basic with uniform thickness, whereas I usually vary line density, because I knew I was going to use black shadows, so you wouldn't be able to tell. The lineart isn't the...er...cleanest I've done. Luckily it's zoomed out. The shadows aren't part of the lineart; they were just painted on in PS, in case you meant that, too.
Sometimes I use the pen tool in photoshop for my lines like in Customisation , or just a brush like in The Voices of the Mountains , but my overwhelming favourite is traditional inking that's been cleaned and touched up in PS
Ahh, you're totally totally right about the tear; it seems to be the bane of my life. I think you're right about making it follow the slope of the muzzle more; I think my problem was that I really didn't - and don't - know the anatomy of lions' faces well at all, so making a foreign body (ie the tear) follow said anatomy was...difficult. O.o I think if I ever acquire the courage to revisit the tear again, I'll apply your advice Thank you for both that and the excellent comment!

First off, I'm sorry it took me so long to reply! I've been having some trouble with my internet cutting out at random times, and it seems to love doing so when I'm trying to get caught up with my comments. I'm also a bit pressed for time since I have a test to study for, so I'm going to try and respond to everything that's appeared in my message centre pretty quickly.
The parts of the lineart that aren't covered by shadows look very smooth, so I suppose that's all that matters. I'm impressed that you're able to make traditional inking blend so well with a digital image; touched up in Photoshop or not, whenever I've tried to combine the two it always looks very, ah, unique.
And you're quite welcome. I can't imagine it would be easy to make the tear follow his muzzle, anyway, with the strong shadows; it would probably look odd. Still, that's the first thing that came to mind when I looked at it.

I love the imagery of the deserted city street and the lion walking alone, with head bowed and a tear streaming down one eye. Its stirring and evocative. I captures such a sense of sad, lonely impotence. They essence of the lyrics that no matter how many friends and loved ones we ever have, we always at some point find ourselves meandering down a deserted avenue, sad, lonely and bereft. And with my namesake I of course find an especial meaning there... as I have over the years watched the friends and family die or slowly fade away as they are wont to do.

You're most welcome. The level of work you do deserves more than just a few lines. I figure that if I am going to bother to say something about someone's art/literature/photos then it should be something meaningful that will either help or encourage them more than just going yay team. I am glad that you appreciated what I had to say. Just know that to many the works you create are more than pictures but commentaries on life that in many cases can have a deep personal connection to the viewer. That's an amazing thing that can not be rewarded or appreciated enough.
Thank you for your kind words as well, it was hard and still is on so many levels but seeing something like your drawing makes the times that you are walking that deserted blvd maybe a little less lonely knowing that someone else out there can see and know exactly what you are feeling at that moment and turn it into something beautiful.

Nah. XD It's because Aslan was walking alone, looking really forlorn, before Susan and...shoot, I forget her name, um um...the little girl...started walking with him.
No problem! I love lions. *hearts*

Ok, you wanted a long comment. I'll try my best.
I like the picture because of the idea. Normally, for stuf like this, people use horses, people, and other things like this. A lion is good because it summons up the idea of a great hero laid low, cast away by the crowd, disgusted at his weakness.
The contrast between blurry photograph of a street and cartoon black and white lion is also a good idea. Instead of looking like just an average emo picture, the lion (Not an emo animal) creates a deeper, more fundamental metaphore for depression and rejection.
There. Like it?

This is very nicely done, and I really like the monochrome coloring. I love the sharp shading, it looks so.. strong. But you can really feel the sad tone in this picture. You pulled the whole thing off quite nicely.
Yeah, I thought that tear was a scar as well, but heck it works well like that anyway!

Wow, that's really pretty! I love how it's all in black and white and grey and the blurred quality of the background and the lights.
The shading on the Lion is great too!
Though the tear doesn't look much like a tear to me, more like a scar, I think it's because of the clear outline.
And something about the placement of the right backleg bothers me. I think because it's lowest point is lower than the left backleg's, if you see what I mean.
It looks as if he's almost crossing his legs to me.
Apart from that though, great job.
He looks very sad.
