Description This piece was made for Spinner'sEnd 8th Challenge: 'Thank you, Severus!'.

Explanation(s):
- I chose to deal with the 'portrait'-affair in my own way: since JKR said that Harry worked hard to place Snape's portrait with the others, I presume that there was someone who actually had to paint the picture...let's assume that, as Ollivender is an historic wandmaker, Mr Turpin is a capable painter, whose family has worked for the school for centuries; when the Headmaster dies, the canvas and colours prepare themselves on their own accord.
- The action takes place some hours after the Battle of Hogwarts; Minerva (and the staff) has been told the truth;
- Mr Turpin has come to Hogwarts to pick up his daughter: 'Turpin' is the real surname of a girl of Harry's age who was Sorted into Ravenclaw (see PS). She's one of those Ravenclaws that chose to fight, and now that the battle is ended, her parents have come to bring her home.
*
This time, as promised, is Minerva's turn.
I guess she would have felt pretty bad after knowing the truth... a bit of guilt for her attitude towards Snape (but not so much, because it was supposed to be that way) and some derangement, because she had always been Deputy Headmistress and Dumbledore's right hand, and all of a sudden she discovered that there was a whole world of things Albus didn't share with her...

Lately, my favourite parts of the first three books of the saga are the ones that show us the interactions between the members of the staff. In those years after the first fall of Voldemort, I think they got on pretty well, together...
I mean, the way they got rid of Lockhart in the end of CoS is pure awesomeness! (and mind it: Severus is the one who starts, with that sharp tongue of his, and Minerva instantly catches up! <--gonna draw this scene ASAP)

I'd like them to make peace...
*
To be continued in part 2, already sketched;
Summary? The portrait comes home...

EDIT: Here's Part 2 - Points! --> [link]
*
Pencils, Ink and some fun on Ps because I wanted to play.

Filius Flitwick, Minerva McGonagall, Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape and the House Cup belongs to JKR;
Mr Turpin (except for his name) belongs to ..mh.. me?

Oh, this is so wonderful! Your style is just absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to look at, and just as much I love your portrayal of the subject matter. I really feel like you nailed what Minerva must have felt after his death! This was so beautiful, thanks so much for sharing!

I think she must have felt pretty awful, in the end. Of cours, she would have understood the game and admitted that they were all supposed to act the way they did; but being Minerva also a caring, passionate woman (and a Gryffindor) who's known Severus for half of his life (as a student, and then a colleague), I guess she would have felt a bit guilty nevertheless.
Ence, the need to atone for the presumed mistakes in a clearly Gryffindor way!

Awww... thanks.
Lots of people keep telling me this kind of thing, I actually feel a bit sorry: I didn't plan to make it that touching; on the other hand, I am the one touched by all your emotional reactions to this couple of pieces: your appreciation encourages me a lot.

Clever idea, and very well executed. I always question why Horgarts didn't have any arts subjects. We known from canon that both Dean Thomas and Luna Lovegood have artistic talent. Surely, the kids should be taught formally, but we don't even hear of extra-curricular drawing/painting club. It's one more way that students from all Houses could have interacted and thus, have helped break down barriers and prejudices.

JulesDrenages In reply to pythiadelphi [2011-11-20 19:55:44 +0000 UTC]

You're right, we've never been told that, but maybe there was some similar club, after all... free associations of students were quite free and popular, I think (except under Umbridge's regime ); we know for sure of a Gobstones team and a Charm club and maybe something else (there's a board in the common room for these kind of things, if I remember correctly...), so, why not?

Thank you, by the way, glad you liked it^^

it was a good decision to add him, in this way it seems (to me^^) as if Minerva would talk to him at the beginning.

this is lovely, and i like how you've drawn the characters. its more like the images in your head, not influenced by the film or other artist's renderings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to melissaIvory [2011-11-20 15:46:06 +0000 UTC]

Now, this really made my day: thank you!
You know, it was a bit difficult, at first. For several reasons, I've never tried to draw lots of adult characters of the saga (or think thoroughly about their features), so when I actually had to give them all a body and a face (I said 'all' because more teachers are involved in Part 2) I felt a bit stunned and spent quite some time in front of a white sheet...
Filius was particularly hard, because the books don't give you a meticulous description (we know much more about Hagrid and Slughorn, for example..they're somehow 'easier') and I don't like the last movie version (the first one, in PS, was more on my wavelenght...);

You're right: I try to be as less influenced by the movies as possible, for a very simple reason: mostly, they don't reflect the characters in my head.
I think they did a very good job with McGonagall, Sprout, Quirrel, Hagrid, Lucius Malfoy, Molly Weasley and Richard Harris' Dumbledore and I appreciated Lockhart and Slughorn (though visually different from 'mine') but, even cheking other artists' pieces, are characters that give you a strong image and the impression we got from the books is more or less the same everywhere...

All this messy ramble just to say: thank you for your words;
they make me feel like I'm going into the right direction, for once!

melissaIvory In reply to JulesDrenages [2011-11-21 02:04:50 +0000 UTC]

you are very welcome, and i completely understand. i don't know if you know, but most of the teachers and adults were the actors and actresses that Jo Rowling wanted to play the parts, and although i like that you don't let that affect you, i have to commend you for that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to melissaIvory [2011-11-21 18:19:15 +0000 UTC]

Does it mean that she actually wanted Rickman to play Snape?!
Because the day I will let him affect my image of Severus it will be the day I stop drawing.
(nothing against Rickman, I like him as an actor; I just can't see Snape there, at all )

Again, thanks^^ I hope to keep following this direction

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

melissaIvory In reply to JulesDrenages [2011-11-21 23:34:45 +0000 UTC]

yes, she wanted Alan Rickman as Severus. surprising, i know, but true. her first choice for Albus was Richard Harris, whom we saw in the first two films before he passed away, and her second choice was Michael Gambon, who i think did a fair job at the role. i totally understand your surprise, because although this is a known fact, most of the fans don't realise that she had a list of whom she felt could play the adult.

i do hope to see more in this comic, because it would be so cool to see The Cup in his portrait.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to melissaIvory [2011-11-22 13:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I knew about Harris; I felt pretty sad, because I've liked him for quite some time; Gambon was not bad in my opinion, though he looked more like a warrior, to me...he kind of lacked that aura of powerful elegance I always associated to Dumbledore. My fault
I'm not really surprised at the fact that she had a list, it seems fair and almost natural that she gave some thought about the matter, it's just that the equation Snape=Rickman does not make sense to me...
You know, I like him very much as an actor, but I never felt Snape in him, never saw him in his features...
Just a matter of points of view, I suppose

Part 2 in progress...who knows what will be hidden there?
