Description ... "I have a plan."

This piece was made for Spinner's End 9th Challenge: "Severus Snape, Slyhterin Pride".

Putting on paper a definite idea of Severus as a Slyhterin is is both stimulating and hard, very hard, at the same time, for me. Ideas, images and concepts pop up every minute or so, each of them is worth some deepening, but none of them is 'the one', the picture that sums up the figure of Severus as a Slytherin.
I've had a lot thinking and reached at least one conclusion (which of course, is valid for me, feel free to disagree): I have to split the subject into two, and look at them separately. There are two ways, to me, to look at Severus through the Slytherin filter: there's of course, his role as Head of Slytherin House, and there's Severus as a Slytherin himself; the first brings to my memory many funny scenes of Quidditch rivalry, inter-House teasing and (un)fair confrontation with the other Heads but the latter is trickier: Severus' Slytherin-ess is unlikely divisible from his role as a spy. True, Lupin is a spy as well, and he's a Gryffindor, and so are Arthur, Tonks and Kingsley, right, but none of them had to play Severus triple-game and none of them was ever doubted by the ones on their side. Infiltrates, more than spies, because they had not the right qualities to bring on such a play.
I definitely want to draw something about Snape as Head of the House, but I'm trying harder than ever to make something out of this second matter, which is more captivating, yes, but definitely not easy (again: at least for me). I keep reading Dumbledore's words: "To give Voldemort what appears to be valuable information while withholding the essentials is a job I would entrust to nobody but you.", that, to me, is the heart of the question, and asking myself: how can I show what a Slytherin champion really is!?
How can I bring to light something that's become unique and special because of its ability to lurk into shadows? How do you show something that's made to stay hidden? How can you clear a position whose greatness lies on doubts?

The first step in this journey was depicting the moment that defines Severus as a pawn for the side of light, but on his own terms. He'll help Potter on Dumbledore's orders, of course. He'll gave the boy the sword, completing the task perfectly, as usual. We know how, because of the Doe chapter, but he gives no explanation, no hints of his thoughts, no doubts about contacting the Chosen One or not, no word on his methods.
No need to worry, though. He has a plan.

And now let's go musing again...
***
On a practical level: pencil, my beloved ink, some PS.
I made his nose a bit more 'beckish', this time. It's abnormal and I like it a lot.
Severus Snape (and this passage) belongs to JKR.

You're welcome! And, oh, the more I stare at it, the more beautiful it gets. I just realized how slight you drew Snape, so fragile even as an adult. And yet so strong, because of his determination. It's simply mesmerizing.ย

Snape is always described as a thin man in the books, my mind frist picutred him as extremely bony and I just went with it. It suits his character, in my opinion. Strong core included, of course.
Thanks for pointing it out, it's a detail I'd almost forgot about...

Thank you, I'm glad you liked them. This specific design of Snape (beckish nose and all) was born after many tries, successful of not, and it felt quite an accomplishment at the time.
I miss him a bit, perhaps I'll go back to draw him in the near future...

Oh yeah, it certainly is an accomplishment! It would be very cool if you made new drawings of him, but don't feel pressured!

I like that it's a traditional piece
Also, it's ice to see how much though you've put to this. It's encouraging and lovely at the same time: I'm sure our Muse is most pleased with your dedication.
I know I am.
Beautiful drawing, too! Very beautiful and cute at the same time. I like how you've drawn the bottom of the robes, as if they were damaged for all they road he has travelled.

That's so very nice of you, thanks a lot!
I'm giving digital drawing a try, because I'm curious and it seems fun, but I've been holding a pencil for almost 20 years, and don't plan on letting go now, by the way!

When it comes to Snape (well, canon Snape, that is the one I love most) I'm not able to just sit and draw: every time you want to portray him, there's some thinking involved. At least for me, because he's such a layered, deep, rich character that I just can't sell him off. And it kind of complicate everything, but in the end I find it's worth the trouble.

Well, he was supposed to put on a travelling cloak, I just wanted some contrast between his headmaster-robes and this piece of clothing that maybe he has owned for years and years of spying. Also, I use to shred the bottom of all his robes in my drawings, so it's a kind of "true Severus coming out", also given the fact that he's going to bring Harry the Sword!

Mafer-Potter In reply to JulesDrenages [2012-07-14 14:59:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, it's like Snow White's step-mother, then! He hides in his travelling cloak when he goes after Harry (to help him, though! Unlike the step-mother ).

He's a character one must sit back and think about, yes, because, like you said, he's so layered and one never knows when one's looking at his real face.

Great work! It really shows how determined and confident he is, such a Slytherin wouldn't even consider failure. Love the torn cloak covering the Slytherin-robe. And his expression says it all.
Also the features:
Perfect!

...after looking at your piece this seems pretty silly, but I definitely had to start from somewhere. Now that I saw that it is possible to depict his most elusive side, I feel a bit more confident: you definitely showed me that we CAN grasp it and put it on paper. I'll go sketching and musing with a very different spirit, now!

Thank you very much. I think it's a nice image too: everyone wonders who could have brought the Sword to Harry and the thought that it could have been *the* Slytherin is almost laughable. Instead...
I'm glad you like your nose. Strangely enough, I like it too in this new version!

Yeah, it picks up on what Sirius told Harry: "The world isn't split up into good people and Death Eaters." Nor is it split into Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff. The world is complex, and if there ever was a symbol of human complexity, it is *the* Slytherin, Severus Snape. But anyway, lovely work. I like anything dark or whimsical, and you've nailed both.

this is truly awesome!!!!!

your explanation is really interesting, and I really agree with you on everything you said about Severus.... he's so interesting ... and people often really tend to "simplifies" him, it's annoying...

I love how your drawing expresses all these aspects of his personality...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to MoonyMina [2012-03-25 09:38:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
There are lots of people around that tend to simplify his character, yeah, and it becomes annoying when it's done because of lack of thinking (this sound too harsh, but at the moment I can't find other words). Of ocurse everyone is entitled to their own opinions and interpretations, though sometimes is true that there's a general tendency to oversimplify things. Or maybe it's us that tends to think to much, who knows.
I understood, though, that very often, even if you try hard to transfer your complex ideas on paper, they don't turn out totally understandable; so, it happens that works that looks 'simple' perhaps are just great pieces that turned out 'wrong'. Which is even more frustrating and, unfortunately, happens very often when Snape is concerned...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MoonyMina In reply to JulesDrenages [2012-03-26 07:15:54 +0000 UTC]

it's not harsh, you know, I often think the same (even if it indeed seems harsh to say or write it)

btw, I love how you explain your work when you upload something, it's always really interesting

and, well, it seems harsh, too, but I prefer being considered as a nerdy freak who thinks too much (which is probably the case, errrr totally the case) than the contrary...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to MoonyMina [2012-03-26 08:27:37 +0000 UTC]

I have this tendency to explain because it's not easy to convey all your thoughts on a piece of paper. Good lines and colours can do miracles, and it's true that a picture is worth a thousand words, but you have to have a huge talent to be able to do that and not be misunderstood. I like reading about other artist's creative process, so I guess I tend to do the same. I also happen to think that the piece itself is more 'complete' with some kind of description: it gives the watcher a guide to 'understand' it but doesn't 'brindle' it too much.
...and I become such a blabber when it comes to Snape!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MoonyMina In reply to JulesDrenages [2012-03-26 08:38:07 +0000 UTC]

really cool way of seeing things I like understanding the ongoing process

and I am a blabber too, about Snape, Remus, Sirius, Dumbledore, Hermione, Draco, ... well, so many...

(if only I had an obsession only for HP, that is to say... but I love discussing things about all my obsessions... that's why I'm here instead of preparing my lessons XD )

I second everything said in the other comments! You've done everything right by the challenge. In order to carry out this role you need a cunning Slytherin and not just any Slytherin. Love or hate Dumbledore, he was no fool and knew who the best person for the job was. I love how you draw Severus. The spare lines are fantastic and I really like that you decided to draw him from behind glancing over his shoulder. Beautiful work!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to Gryffgirl [2012-03-24 21:23:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. The pose came naturally, I only had to choose the right sentence: was it better on the "Don't worry, Dumbledore" or on the "I have a plan"? I liked the first version better but I couldn't come up with an expression for the "plan" part that was powerful enough to win over the glance-over-shoulder; so I chose the second version in the end. Incredible as it seems, I like this Severus too, in his simplicity, so I'm glad you like him as well. Besides, new noses do miracles...

...oh, yeah, by the way, I'm totally a Dumbledore-lover.

I really admire the thoughtful, analytical approach to what I consider a tricky Challenge here. Snape is nicely done, love his attitude, nose and hands and the well illustrated sword. It's really cool how you kept the colors and images simple and spare here, too. Your comments, though, are really insightful. When and if I get a chance to contribute to the Challenge I will be looking at your Muse and reading over your comments again, because you seem to have an informed grasp of the intricacies and many shades of grey (sorry! ) that one has to consider to do this Challenge justice.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JulesDrenages In reply to joeyv7 [2012-03-24 20:36:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, thanks Cathy, this really means a lot.
I do find the Challenge tricky, and very much so. At first I didn't think it would have been so difficult, but it is. The risk to slip into banality is huge: not there's something wrong in a classic portrait of our favourite Slytherin, but if you're trying to go deeper and end up with something that shows nothing of that depth you're struggling to reach, that can be frustrating...
I needed a starting point, here, that's why lines and colours are as plain and neat as possible. I considered submitting the "sketchy" version of this, which was a bit more messy and a bit more powerful (that energy that only raw pencil express), but opted for the "clean" one in the end, because I feel that in order to find something meaningful in this Challenge, I need to follow the path of simplicity. And maybe enrich things while they're progressing.
It's complicated, and it surely drains your energy, but I find myself totally captivated!

Absolutely.
I agree it is a very Slytherin challenge. Simple, White and black at first view and then...tricky with shades of grey...
