Description Photo: Artist John Paul Thornton holds his painting of missing child Jaycee Lee Dugard.

I painted this eighteen years ago in 1991, the week Jaycee was abducted. Thousands carried her painting in public exhibitions of hope and support.

Here is the link to my recent television interview on CBS news about the missing children "Paintings Of Hope" project: [link]

Love to her and her family.

I just got a copy too! She is an amazing young woman.

Shame on the many law professionals who were too lazy to just check out her abductor's back yard for eighteen years...Phil's parole officers visted his property over sixty times and NEVER had the professional integrity to even look around. Even with neighbors reporting children in the backyard!

In the end, goodness and light overcame evil and sloth.

Much love to her and her family.

Dude, what you're doing is... indescribable. Maybe you think that what you're doing is small, but it's too big for me to even try and describe how HUGE it is...

God bless... and never stop painting...

In a world here it is so easy to be overwhelmed by events and feel one single voice will make no difference. You work, art and example has shown what a profound difference one committed person can make. Thank you for inspiring us and for your art. I cant think of anyone more deserving.

Absolutely amazing... and to think I had no idea of this feat until now.

I heard about the story and thought of how horrible it must've been for her... to know someone like you unknowingly watched out for her with your stunning portrait and ultimately helped recover her is touching. :3

Keep up your great work, John!

I did not recover her. But the painting kept her memory alive across the country.

it was just a candle of hope.

Thank you,

It is so refreshing, to see people who are willing to still do good things in this world. You cut on the news, and everything is always so negative. War, famines, riots, natural distasters..thank you for being a light in the dark.

This is a wonderful painting. I love that you do this. BRAVO!!! ^_^ I am so happy that she still alive and was found. I really did cry when I heard that she just walked into a police station and told them that it was her. I hope that the man is sent to prison for life... Again, great job and I hope to see more!!! ^_^

It looks like you did it with crayons from this distance. It’s not as chaotic as your new ones, it’s more uniform and you can actually tell the fine details of the person, instead of having your viewers create the face for themselves.

Btw, you need a hair cut....

Long hair is back, you know.

I go to a grocery store and strange ladies run their hands through it while we are waiting in line. Their eyes are glazed over and they coo to me about the "fullness" and "thickness", and I am like, "uh, hello..."

My head was shaved for awhile and that seemed to scare the hell out of people.

Love, JP

I had the same thing happen in highschool, I had all the girls there at awe saying the same thing, though I never had them run their fingers through it.

Trust me on this, I had the long hair to. I love it short now, (mainly because it doesnt take 3 hours to wash.)

And besides, you an artist! You're supposed to be setting the style, not following the crowd!

johnpaulthornton In reply to StraightJacketRed [2009-10-06 01:57:37 +0000 UTC]

I am under the illusion that I am setting a future trend in front of all the short-haired folk who will be caught off guard...

Anyway, I decided that when I do cut it, I will donate it to "locks of Love," the organization that creates wigs of real hair for kids with cancer. So I'm growing it a bit longer still!

Maybe I will shave it all when I do.... We'll see...

(It does take three freakin hours to wash, though, you are right.)

Painting missing children AND donating hair!

God, if you were a scientist you would have cured cancer, ended world hunger and stopped world war three via time machine all in one night. (And for once I’m not being sarcastic!)

I would like to say thank you. Thank you for using your fantastic talent to bring light to such a horrible thing. Child abductions are horrible - for a fellow student or a parent. Life seems to stop when a child has gone missing - and by doing these portraits, you are helping beyond belief. The internet is a powerful thing - and to post these portraits up here, well, it's spreading the news even faster. Millions of people are going on the internet, on this site every day. It warms my heart to see someone who cares. I would like to congratulate you on starting such an awesome project.

I will be watching you. Watching these portraits that you paint in hopes that I can help someday. I can help bring a child home and to help them be reconnected to a warm and loving family. The family that most of us are fortunate to have.

what inspired you to start painting missing children? do you know a child personally that went missing, or do you have a child of your own that went missing? im not trying to be rude i hope you dont think that, im just curiouse

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

johnpaulthornton In reply to isabellica [2009-09-25 22:16:25 +0000 UTC]

Hello,

You are not coming off as rude at all!

Thank you for asking. A ten-year-old student of mine was abducted when I was teaching art at a school in Los Angeles. It got me thinking about the issue of missing children, and also about questions of "belonging" and exploring who is worthy of being immortalized in a portrait.
I also had an art instructor in college who told me portraiture was incapable of being effective as an art form. I was moved by all of these inspirations.

why did you paint her?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

johnpaulthornton In reply to isabellica [2009-09-25 03:21:17 +0000 UTC]

In 1991, a little flier appeared in my mailbox. It featured Jaycee Lee Dugard, who had just been abducted a week before.

I had started a series painting random photos of missing children , and she was the fifth such portrait I attempted.(Although on my dA site, she is identified as "Missing Child Portrait 50")

I painted here because I felt that a painting was a civil way to honor her.
