I came across your avatar from someone's friend list, was intrigued by the image so had to navigate to here....

This character design is awesome, both artistically and through craftsmanship, such a quirky design....

Really like it, keep up the great work....

Cheers Evan!

I find this type of wax, Casteline, easier to work with compared to most waxes. When it's heated it works more like regular clay so it's soft enough to model and you can quickly block in the shapes much quicker than you would with a regular wax. The more standard types of waxes turn to a liquid slop when there heated and you have to drip it a bit at a time to build up the forms. With Casteline once it has cooled becomes solid and then you can begin to carve away at the surface. What I do is use a combination of heated metal tools and lightly melt the surface of the sculpt with a lighter. I keep a block of Casteline under a lamp with the tools resting in it, then by dragging the tools through it heats them enough to be able push the wax of the sculpt about and smooth the surface. Then towards the end I'll use fine grade sanding pads, which also are heated with a lighter, to further smooth out the surface. Then usually brush a bit of lighter fluid over some areas if needs be.

The downside is if you want to move any parts of the sculpt. Having to heat each area or just completely cutting a part off and fusing the parts back together can become quite frustrating.
It took me quite a while to get used to working with it. The majority of my work before was done with oil based clays and Sculpey. So it was a bit of a learning curve.
... I've rambled on a bit there, sorry.

Here's the place that I buy the Casteline from in you're interested: [link] (it's the hard/green variety)

Thanks again.

So why did you make the switch to wax?
I have never worked with wax before but I am curious, thanks for those helpful details about Casteline.

JamieDMac In reply to ebonyraven [2010-05-15 12:03:29 +0000 UTC]

Hey, so sorry for the late reply.
The reason for switching to wax I guess was a combination of frustration with other modelling materials, Sculpey inparticular, and also the fact that a lot of companies at the time wanted there stuff to be sculpted in wax... now of course they want everybody to work digitally

I mostly work in Fuse wax these days, which is produced by Willow Products [link]
Essentially the same thing as Casteline but much smoother. If you're interested in trying out wax I definitely recommend starting with that.

JamieDMac In reply to Arum1966 [2007-08-06 11:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! Yeah, I know what you mean. I have to redo them quite a bit, can never get the shapes looking right and they always look too flat. I really enjoy working in wax now. It took me a while to get used it. It was a bit of a learning curve after using softer clays and it's much slower to work with, which is one of the major draw backs. But I like your able to sand it smooth and not have to worry about an armature (for the most part) or squashing any details... which is something I do constantly.

Cheers for the faves!

wow, this has really come along... this looks real nice Jamie. It's a great character design also, real memorable. (I bet he has some kind of speech inpediment when he talks...) Great work dude Will you mould and paint it up? maybe in silicone (that would be hot )

Cheers very much mate!
Yeah, I'd like to get it moulded and cast so I can paint one up. I'm thinking of making some kits of it too. I might have to look for a new mould makers though... yet again. If I could do it myself I'd get straight on it. Pain in the backside not being able to.

He has a stutter by the way.

Thanks again!

does it cost much to go to a mouldmakers? whats a matter with the one you've been seeing? how come you can't do it yourself?

stutter, he he

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamieDMac In reply to Sean-Dabbs-fx [2007-06-29 20:24:50 +0000 UTC]

The cost isn't too bad actually. Probably works out cheaper than if I did myself after all the cock ups I'll make. lol
Well, I've been waiting for weeks now to receive two castings back. They moulded one sculpt for me and sent the first two castings back in just over a couple of weeks which I was really impressed with. But since then I've heard nothing from them about the other two. I sent them an email last night and I'll give them a call next week if I haven't heard back. Seems a bit strange having to wait so long without an update. They phoned me to let me know what was going on with the first two so I thought they might have done the same. I dunno, maybe they're just really busy or maybe I'm just being paranoid and impatient.

I can't do it myself because I've got no room to. That's all it is. I just don't have the facilities and the gear to go with it. Even if I have to spray something I have to wait for a dry day and do it outside... it's a sorry state of affairs. I need to find a new place to live where I have enough space to be able to do all this stuff. For the time being though I'm stumped.

Sean-Dabbs-fx In reply to JamieDMac [2007-06-30 08:09:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah I'm pretty useless at moulding, I've had to do no end of repair work on the gnome, I'm always real carefull and try and make sure nothing goes wrong but it always does :S first off i couldn't get the amount of catalyst right in the fibreglass, (2%) I actually put not enough in and had to mix catalyst in after i d already painted it onto the mould. The seam was far too big (I don't know what i did wrong there) there were air bubbles (despite banging on the table like a loon ) and to top it off reticulation problems with the fibreglass, oh and one of the hands didn't come out propery so i had to resculpt with milliput. ... And that was a good mould/cast for me :S

I have a shed I can use for moulding but because i need to keep an eye on my daughter i did it outside. So when I was moulding it up (in plaster) it suddenly started pelting it down, raining real hard into the liquid plaster mould. that made me screech a little - ha ha .

But everything did work out ok in the end.

Could you send me the contact details, and price and stuff of these mouldmaker guys? I'd like to look into it. It may be easier in the long run...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamieDMac In reply to Sean-Dabbs-fx [2007-07-02 21:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Ha, I always used to put too much catalyst in for fear of it not setting... never even bothered to measure it out half the time. Seemed to work though, hehe.
Whenever I've done a two part fibreglass casting I can never get them to line up. They either over lap too much making the piece disjointed or I get these huge gaps along the seams. Don't know how the hell I manage it.

I'd rather just to stick to sculpting and let someone who knows what they're doing handle the mouldmaking side of things. ...really should learn how to do it properly myself though... I expected to learn this type of stuff in college, pfft, that's a laugh.
