Thank you!

I know, it's been far too long
I've been having trouble trying to finish anything. At some point last year everything seemed to come to a halt and I just couldn't get going again. Don't know what caused it. Hopefully I can get back into some sort of ryhthm

Congrats on the Classical Comics work by the way! Seeing your comment just reminded me to order Frankenstein. Been meaning to check it out. Also looking forward to seeing what you do with A Midsummer's Night Dream

Hey, sounds like you've been suffering from this art-block that's been going around lately! I know a huge number of people who've been feeling it... I was suffering myself at one point but I managed to kick it by learning not to put so much pressure on myself
I'm sure if you lighten off, and have some fun and take some time to see the inspiration that's all around you, you'll get back into the swing of things in now time.
Thanks so much for the congrats!! - If you're after a copy of Frankenstein we have some spare, if you'd like one signed by us we could send you one over
MSND will be a little more of a wait yet though I'm affraid, but there's a competition coming up soon to design fairys/goblins as background characters, so if you fancied that it'd be great to see what beasties you felt like cooking up!

Yeah, I've noticed that too. It's weird how so many people have been having blockage problems... so to speak
I usually get it for a few weeks here and there but have never had it this prolonged before. Over 18 months it's been
You're spot on about the fun aspect. I've been so concerned about trying to make money out of this sculpting lark and focusing too much on what pieces I think people want to see... don't even know what I what to do half the time.
Then I end up with scatterbrain syndrome trying to do everything but accomplishing nothing. Sucks all the fun out of it and then I struggle to keep motivtated.
But like you say just got to try and ease off and have fun with it
And I would love a signed copy of Frankenstein!
Let me know how much and where to send the moolah, thanks
The competition sounds like a lot of fun! I loves me some goblins... would sculpted designs be acceptable? I can't draw for squat

it must be some sort of block in public consciousness for some reason... not sure why, but then I'm not sure I understand public consciousness either lol
18 months?! ... wow.. that's got to be a record.. and one that SUCKS too, I hope you're kicking it now and getting back to having fun... forget about what sells and what others want.. focus on what loves started you on the journey in the first place.
Awesome that you'd like a signed copy of ole Frankie, the books are £9.99 each, with a choice of 2 different text options o.O .. not sure what postage would cost but it shouldn't be more than a couple of quid. ... send me a note with your address and what version of the book you'd like (more info on the different versions here; [link] , more info on the Frankie title here; [link] ) and I'll sort out a copy for ya and send ya paypal details.

Surely a sculpt would be acceptable for the design comp! in fact, that'd be awesome! - y'never know it might even kick-start the fun for ya again.. that would be cool

Best wishes, dude! Kat Over and Out

lol.. I wouldn't even begin to imagine how the public consciuosness works
No doubt a lot of it has to do with the economy and just life in general being crappy. Certainly hasn't helped me with the ol' motivation I know that much.

But yeah, I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things and starting to enjoy it all again
For a while I felt like I just lost the love for it, which sucked big time.

I'll definitely have to do something for the design comp then! Be a good oppurtunity to do a one of a kind maquette style piece... been meaning to do more stuff like that

Sent you a note by the way

Peace out, playa!

KatCardy In reply to JamieDMac [2009-07-27 11:08:54 +0000 UTC]

yeah maybe you're right.. maybe the economy has something to do with it... although that excuse can only work to a certain extent, cos if you look at some of the most prolific/well known artists through history they're often spawned out of times of great hardship and desperation... but then I guess maybe we're just too comfortable in our life-styles to know how to react when things go wrong. who knows!
I'm glad to hear you're starting to get back into it now anyway.

I'll look forward to seeing what you do for the old design comp, I'm sure it'll be awesome, even if it's just quick maquette style work your sculptures agre great! - you'll probably get more character across in one of your sculpts than most of us could in pages of drawings! lol

Got your note! Cheers! Will reply to that next! ^-^

Ha, darn good point! And isn't art after all to some degree all about suffering and all that guff
I recently discovered something about Van Gough that I never knew... that he only ever managed to sell one painting. Probably common knowledge.. shows how much attention I paid in art history
But yeah, that never stopped him from pursuing his art. Knowing that kinda cheered me and depressed me at the same time

Aw shuycks, thank you! I doubt that very much though. Most of my inspiration comes from other peoples 2D work. The way they can capture character and personality with a few pencil strokes amazes me. Very humbling

KatCardy In reply to JamieDMac [2009-07-28 10:04:42 +0000 UTC]

art is suffering ? ... supposedly.. I don't hold with that maudlin bullshit though.. art is awesome! LOL .. I think it's more accurate to say art is expression in general.. be it happy or sad... but there are plenty of classic examples through history who hold to the "art is suffering" model... look at all the art that came outta the war periods.. it was all gritty reflections/cometary.. not brainless escapism likes what I likes I guess the former is more likely to create controversy and attention from a society and the like. - Gosh, aren't we very full of it? LOL
I never knew that about Van Gough.. I knew he wasn't well off but I hadn't realised he'd been THAT badly received when he was alive... I'm guessing he's one of those classic examples of only being appreciated once he's dead? ... it's gutting really isn't it ? .. we slog our hearts out and only really get any kind of recognition (if at all) once we pop our clogs!! LOL ... mind you, things are a little different these days I suppose... I'd love to know how many hits Van Gough would have got it DeviantArt had been around in his day!
It's certainly a reassuring fact though, that if the great Van Gough didn't sell anything while he was alive, the likes of you and I certainly shouldn't feel so put-out and down on ourselves!! LOL

2D's certainly more instant/disposable than Sculpture... but it just lack's that whole-ness.. the solid dimension... I'm sure you'll be able to cook something awesome up with a speedy lil' maquette

Your book should arrive tomorrow if it didnt' come today (I sent it first class yesterday afternoon) x

At the end of the day it's supposed to be fun... and it is fun.. that's why we do it
I never gave a shit, still don't, about expressing myself or having any meaning behind my work... I just likes making stuffs
And brainless escapism is the best!... if it weren't for the likes of Star Wars I probably wouldn't be sitting here today, lol
I'm gonna shut up now because I'm crap at this type of thing... during Theoretical Studies at art school I would sit quietly in the corner with a blank look on my face lol

It's really sad though about Van Gough. No wonder he wound up hacking his lobe off
But yeah, it was a completley different world. It must have been so difficult just trying to get the exposure. LOL... can you imagine the sorts of comments he would get if he had a dA account... "dude, you should blend all the colors together so there like not dots".
Well, knowing that fact certainly made me feel a little bit better... I've got one up on him by having sold two pieces in my lifetime

I'd best go do some work so I can try and sell another

KatCardy In reply to JamieDMac [2009-07-29 15:11:19 +0000 UTC]

oh plenty of my pictures have meaning behind them, or they're an expression of me.. but that doesn't mean I buy into the whole art is suffering bs. lol
I used to love art history/theoretical studies for as long as I was in the right mood for it.. on a good day I could analyse a stick man for hours... however a lot of the time I'd just be struggling to keep awake lol

yeah.. wasn't that whole Van Gough ear-business brought about by mania from eating lead-based paint or something? o.O LOL .. sounds like he was crazy to start with to me (who EATS paints?!)

What sculpts are you working on ATM? - good luck with them!

That probably wont be till late next year though
