Makes me think of the Aerial Gargoyle form for Firebrand (Red Arremer) in Demon's Crest / Demon's Blazon

Thanks man! I never had the cash to kit it so it was busted up not long after completion. Been meaning to sculpt another one at a smaller scale, either just as a bust or a full figure, and try and get that kitted. Hopefully some day...
Cheers.

Thank you!
Yeah, tell me about it... I've tried taking him to one but he weren't havin' none of it. And attempting to fit a set of retainers is a right kerfuffle.

This is a very interesting interpretation of the gargoyle. (i'm guessing) It seem to blend together the characteristics of a hawk, a wolf, and a cantankerous old man. The sculpture has just the right amount of anatomical distortion mixed with enough anatomical accuracy to make it look like a creature that could have existed but doesn't. Such was displayed in the details of the ear and the execution of wrinkles on the face.
I particularly like the small details that make the piece... "work. Specifically, the indentation of the temples as contrasted with the raised brow line and forehead, the contours and twisted position of the ear,the sharp flow of the cheekbone, and the shape of the nose. I like the texturing of the wrinkles, particularly that of the forehead, and also of the brow. I also liked the unique shape of the beak/ horn, or whatever it is
However, there were some little parts which i thought were a bit...lacking I guess. I find the wriinkles on the cheek adjacent to the cheekbone a bit too deep and slightly uniform. i also found the teeth a bit too tame, I guess. But that's just me
Overall, holy mother***** this is GOOD. Love it, love it, love it. Fave AND watch.
Some questions:
How did you do it? Where can I get this kind of clay/tools/ materials? Did you use any specific sculpting tools? Tips? Ever thought of doing an orc? (just messin around)
Anyways...whew! that was a long one. Seeya, and again, I LOVE IT

Dude, thank you so much for such a great comment!! Really means a lot to me
I'm sorry for not replying sooner. I have to say that I love the fact you can see a crantankerous old man in there. For skin reference I looked at a lot of elderly men but as far as character goes my main goal was to try and make him look purely vicious. I think it's wonderful you see more than that though
The design of the beak was inspired by certain herbivorous dinosaurs such as triceratops with those beak like appendages. Apart from that I don't think I looked at any other real life reference. It's more influenced by other artists, inparticular Miles Teves [link] and Steve Wang [link]
At the time I was more interested in trying to emulate their work, especially Teves, which probably shows in some of the design, I dunno
I agree with you about the wrinkles and teeth... I don't like the teeth at all to be honest. They're too neat and as you said 'tame'. I did a sketch later on of a new design that had more gnarly and crooked looking teeth and a more angular and sharper looking beak. Still haven't gotten around to sculpting it though.
I'd been sculpting for about two years when I did this so didn't really know what I was doing. Never did anything with an open mouth before and wasn't sure how to go about doing it. The wooden dowel was nailed onto a base board and then wrapped with chicken wire to make the basic structure for the head. That was secured by wrapping wire... think I used the stuff you find in gardening stores. Then I packed on the clay and pushed strands of wire into it to form the shapes of the upper and lower jaw. The ears were cut from a sheet fine aluminium mesh, the kind used for car repairs, and again just pushed into the clay and then more clay packed over the top to secure them in place. The clay is an oil based clay called Chavant Le Beau Touche [link] It's great for large scale stuff because it's soft and easy to push about. And being oil based it doesn't dry out. I used some loop tools, some store bought some homemade using brass stock and guitar strings. And some cheap wooden sculpting tools that you can pick up just about anywhere
And yes, I have thought of doing an orc
I hope I've answered your questions. If you have any others or need help with anything feel free to give me a shout
Anyway, thanks very much once again... and for the watch and fave. I really appreciate it!

Thats amazing.
did you do this for any particular purpose, or just as sketchbook/portfolio stuff?

JamieDMac In reply to TheAverageGeek [2009-11-12 21:07:07 +0000 UTC]
You're far too kind, thank you!
It was just done as a portfolio piece. But an indie filmaker wanted to use it on a poster to promote his horror film. I dunno if actually put one together or not as I never heard anything back. He wanted some gargoyles making for a graveyard scene if the film ever made it into production, which would've been insanely cool getting paid to make a bunch of 'goyles. But alas...

Amazing, and very original! The wrinkles in its skin certainly make the piece, and I love the worn-looking ears. So much character in this ghastly guy!
