Description This Falcon broke our hearts. He seemed so sad. He had a severe injury that has kept him from being released back into the wild.
This Raptor Center is amazing. They take wonderful care of the birds and reptiles there whilst educating the public about them.

It has been a very long time. I check in every now and then, but may have time to stop by more often real soon.
How have you been? I see your sweet picture you made me every day. Cheers me up!

we're good -

we still have our part-time job so travel this summer is possible but my boss tells me 2010 will be the leanest year he's seen in twenty years

as Spring arrives we get closer and closer to breaking out of our cabin fever with some travel - definitely going to Illinois this summer, maybe the gulf coast in autumn

how's your family? hopefully the recession has not hit you as hard as it's hurt many others

how's the humane society work? i hear it's very difficult to provide the same level of service now that so many are unable to keep treasured pets we've doubled our financial support of the local shelter to try to help make up the shortfalls - but it's very stressful now a days

anyway, don't mean to sound so down i'm delighted you'll be able to spend more time in soon - it's a good thing, no?

Wow, I thought I'd get a chance to be on here more often. But I guess not. I'm on a 10-year old ibook, and DA is unbelievably slow to load! (I gave my newer computer to my college kid.) So sorry it has taken me months to get back with you!
The economy has been a hard thing, but we manage, and love makes it not so bad. I know our local shelter has had it hard. I'm unable to help them out anymore, sad to say. I'm delighted to hear you will still get to do your traveling. That is great! Enjoy your travels for me, as it may be a long while before we can afford a trip anywhere. But our staycations at home are not so bad. Take care!

i'm glad to hear you're well

yep, our retirement was well established before the financial tsunami

we lost both cats in just over two months, but they were nearly twenty, so they had a nice long time with us and our memories keep them close

sorry you can't help the shelter anymore we are able to maintain our financial support and think now that our house cats are gone we'll up it a bit to help others caring for the stranded in these hard times

take your time responding - every half a year or so, just to let me know one of my oldest and dearest friends on is till around to

I usually don't buy the "oh, he's so sad" schtick about animals in zoos and such, but in this case, I do. For the fastest animal on the planet, and one of the most amazing aerobatic flyers ever, being grounded just has to leave him feeling like a ghost of his former self.

You captured him beautifully, too.

They have a similar program at Busch Gardens Williamsburgh - lots of bald eagles, unfortunately.
He appears so intense!

IrishRaine In reply to SpunkOnAStick [2009-02-25 01:15:43 +0000 UTC]

That's sad about the eagles. I will have to try to go there whenever we're in the area.

He was very scared. He might have been new, as the other birds there seemed at ease. I will try to go there again within the year and see how this guy is doing.

SpunkOnAStick In reply to IrishRaine [2009-02-25 17:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Sad they can't return to the wild, but otherwise they would be dead. Hopefully this guy will seem more relaxed next time you visit...

What a pity! I cannot imagine what it must be like for a raptor not to be able to fly. So sad.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IrishRaine In reply to RooCat [2009-02-25 01:13:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, my heart just broke seeing how lost he looked. You can see in the picture he is missing most of one wing. I wish they could make a prothesis for him so he could be free again.

RooCat In reply to IrishRaine [2009-02-25 01:42:10 +0000 UTC]

Now that is an interesting thought, prosthetic wings for crippled birds. Maybe someday as we get more "bionic". Grounded raptors regardless of species always look so sad to me, no matter how well fed and cared for. A beautiful bird, nonetheless. Thank yo for sharing.

it's so sad to see wild animals hurt and then captured, with injuries so severe that they can't go back but we had a falconess on the top of the skyscraper in the city centre, while my office was on 23rd floor, and peregrines are quite rare. it was interesting to learn that in this bird species females are bigger
