Description Fear the adorableness, FEAR IT! The paper is all wavy and weird because I spilled water on it, sorry. Anyway, I started this sometime last month, and only just got around to finishing up the coloring. As the title suggests, it's New Mexico as a little kid, dressed up in various outfits from the native people of her area. Now, there are a few discrepancies, such as the fact that a lot of the fabric wouldn't have been around when she was this young. But I couldn't find many reliable sources on exactly what materials would have been used or how they looked before the Spanish came in, so I just went with the references I found.

The first one is probably the most realistic, since from all the dioramas ans textbook illustrations I've seen, little Southwestern children would've just been naked, or at most worn a loincloth or something.

The second is for the Pueblo people, most of the references coming from pictures from the Taos Pueblo. There's no long sleeved undershirt here, since it was the Spanish who implemented those because they felt the off shoulder dressed were immodest. I'm not too happy with the blanket or the coloring in general, but I do love her hair here! Really the blanket should be a little cape-like think tied over her shoulders, but I couldn't resist drawing a blanket. The thing on the longer necklace is supposed to be a piece of sandstone from Acoma Pueblo along with some turquoise. It was my headcannon for a little while that she made it herself and keeps it under her pillow to this day, but then I realized it looked the necklace from Disney's Pocahontas. >_>

The first of two Navajo dresses. I chose blue because those were the most common colors I saw used together out of all my references, plus it links to NM's favorite color today being blue. The skirt's lighter than the top because that was the case in most of the references. Her hair is in one of those awesome looking buns, with a silver cover pin that you can't see. Then there's a broach, belt, and a squash-blossom necklace (which really would've come around in the late 1800s if I remember correctly). Also, that dress is made out a velvet.

Next is the Navajo reg dress. I think this one was my favorite to do, since I love the Navajo rugs! She's got a bun again, a concho belt, bracelet like the one she ears now, and the same broach from the last picture. I gave her slightly different shoes, and I think the leggings go up too high. But it's still pretty cute!

Now for the Apaches, the first based on the Jicarilla of northern New Mexico. This one gave me a bit of trouble, most of the the good references I found were the torso and up, and in black and white. I only found one full body photo of this type of dress, and another that looked kind of similar, so I based the bottom off a mix of those. But I did find about two color photographs and a drawing, and from sheen and tone could guess what the mettle was. However, I'm still not sure exactly what's going on with the hair.

The Mescalero Apache (SE NM) one gave me the most trouble as I found the fewest references, only one was in color, the outfits I could find were mostly for men. I did find a few dresses that all looked kind of like what she's wearing here, but one was very specifically a wedding dress. I saw wraps like what she has on in a few pictures, but they were from the side and the back, so I based how she's wearing it off of my one colored photo, which was an Apache chief. Also, the ones the women were wearing probably came from a much different outfit. The hair ornament should probably be in the back, and the feathers are too small to be from the bird they're meant to be from. Other than that, I guess I liked how it came out.

New Mexico/Catori is mine. Please enjoy and forgive the inaccuracies.

Thanks a ton! Ya know, that might've actually come from using all the black and white photos, all the outfits were old and probably more traditional. Oh yeah, as Texas can very well tell you. Though he may reverse that order and insert a terrifying.
