Description Okay, editing done for now. Wow, I really need to update her profile picture, fix some of that ugly coloring and jewelry.

Place: Austin, Travis County, Texas, United States of America (City, County, State, Country)
Nickname: Live Music Capital of the World, Silicon Hills (less common), City of the Violet Crown (Even Less common)
"Moto": Keep Austin Weird
Human Name: Stephanie Eberly Bullock (See lower for meaning)
Apparent Age: 20-21 (Theoretically . . . "OTL)
Founding: 1837 as settlement of Waterloo. Officially made Capital December 27, 1839
Spoken Languages: English, technically fluent in Spanish.

Appearance:
Physical: Auburn hair cut short. It may look kinda wavy, but it's actually relatively straight, just choppy and she doesn't brush it carefully. White, but extremely tan from being out in the sun pretty much 24/7. She's got the type of skin that freckles when she tans, but only very slightly. I've got her way to light here, but I'll fix later She's about 5'10". Theoretically, she looks around 21 or so. Long, lean, and muscular.

Personality Blurb: Austin is one high-energy woman. She's never seems to sit down, and when she does it's never for long. She's very open minded, and despite being atheist she loves learning about different religions; they interest her as an important aspect of culture. With her constant talking and sometimes unwanted offers of "assistance" she can come off as arrogant, even elitist at times. But once you get to know her, even for a short time, you'll learn that she's very down to earth and cares deeply about everything she does. She makes it her business to get to know everyone she meets, and be a friend to all. Her extreme enthusiasm and forwardness can be off-putting to certain types of people, but she's starting to recognize this and is trying to be more subtle. Stress, trying. If she really doesn't like you she won't try and sugarcoat the feeling. She'll make sure (most of the time) that she has good reason, and will make it quite clear. She prides herself in being so different from the rest of Texas, but she still makes an effort to be friendly with the rest of the cities. This isn't to hard, as beyond politics most of them share some underlying personality traits, such as friendliness, humor, perseverance, and passion.

History in Brief: Austin is actually a pretty young city. There were prehistoric peoples in the area long, long ago. The Tonkawa were in the Balcones area, as well as some Comanche and Apache groups. The Spanish set up some missions in the 1700's, but the location sucked and they moved to around the San Antonio River. And the tribes were nomadic, not settling in one area, constantly roaming around the region. There weren't really any Mexican settlements around Austin, and Anglos didn't even start settling the area until after Mexican Independence. So despite being the capital, Austin wasn't even around until after Texas became a Republic.

The first permanent settlement was Waterloo, founded in 1837. In 1839, Mirabeau B. Lamar (recently elected second president) was struck by the area and chose it as an optimal site for the new capital, wanting to expand westward. Though it was on some important trade routes, the city was very isolated and vulnerable to attack, a fact that didn't sit well with many Texans. One of these was Sam Houston who, in 1942, sent men to Austin to remove the records by force after Austinites refused to give them up. Angenlina Eberly noticed the men, and fired a cannon to alert the other Austinites, who organized and retrieved the archives. (This was the Texas Archives War) However, Houston had moved the capital to Washington-on-the-Brazos, where the government was run from until about 1845. Because the town really had no purpose anymore, it began to deteriorate and the population dropped into the 100s. It was made capital, officially, on February 19, 1846, when Texas officially went from a country to a state.

Since becoming the capital again, Austin started to recover, the population slowly (and I mean slowly) climbing. By the time the Civil War rolled around the population was over 3,000, with about 1/3 of the population owning slaves, plus 12 blacks. (demographic statistics from this time from Wikipedia, I'm sorry) When the time came, Austin and the rest of Travis county actually voted against secession. When the war was actually in swing however, Austin and Travis County sent hundreds of men to various Confederate volunteer companies. Though it experienced supply shortages, the city never saw any action.

The city finally began to grow and change. There was an influx of settlers from all over, new business were established, new buildings and it's first railroad were reconstructed, and the pink granite capital was planned and constructed in the 1880's. Though it never rose to the economic prowess of other Texas cities, it's authority as an educational and political center began to establish itself.

To keep this brief, I'm gonna stop the history section here. Yes, I know there is much much more, and yes I know what it is, but frankly I'm tired and want to get to more of the character.

Relations:

San Antonio: San An's basically an older sister, aunt, and sometimes mother figure all rolled into one. Like many of the younger Texas cities she'll call her "TÃŽa Toni," but sometimes call her Ally when she's trying to be seen as more of a friend than a younger family member. She'll switch between these two attempts at relation depending on the situation, behaving how she feels is appropriate/according to what she wants to accomplish. She's extremely different from the older city but extremely close none the less. If she's having big personal problems, needs advice on something she can't ask anyone, anything like that she'll go San An. If she needs to she'll act more childish around San An, because she's one of the few she doesn't feel she has to act mature and confident around all the time, as she's seen the worst of her as a little kid. Sometimes when she's feeling more friendly she'll try and get the Alamo City to loosen up, maybe smile about, and will sometimes try to get her (either jokingly or seriously, it's hard to tell) to have some semblance of a romantic life.

Texas: This relationship . . . fun. They're as different as can be, and almost never stop fighting. They disagree on pretty much every political issue, and a fair amount of moral ones, so their encounters are usually unpleasant and involve many shouting matches and pointless arguments. At times they really do seem to hate each other, and the feeling is clear and mutual. However, they are family, and care for each other deep down. Really, really deep down. If anything really bad happens to Austin, Texas will show his defensive, concerned, over-protective side, and it's not a good idea to mess with him then. Austin will let other insult him and rag on him till the cows come home (as he will with her) but if you say something completely unfair, untrue, or uncalled for, she'll snap at you talk you down until you're on your knees. These instances are rare, but when they do occur it's one of the few times you won't doubt she's Texan.
A much more common event would be their jam sessions. Music is pretty much the only thing they readily agree on.

Random Things:

She's the Capital of the state of Texas, so why no boots or hat? The girl's a complete 180 of the Texan stereotype. She's very liberal, likes to make people happy, is atheist, cares about more than one sport, and ain't too fond of guns. (She's actually not a great shot) She's got a similar attitude though- bold, outgoing, confident, prideful, prone to being overbearing, loud, and a huge football fan.

Austin's legitimacy as capital was actually in question until 1872. There was an election held to determine the capital, and the city won over places like Houston (suck it!) and Waco.

On her human name. "Stephanie" is for Stephen F. Austin, namesake of the city and known as the Father of Texas. "Eberly" is for Angelina Eberly, who I mentioned in the history section. "Bullock" refers to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. The name also fits because "bullock" means bull, and the symbol of UT is the longhorn, specifically longhorn bull.

The flower earcuffs are for Lady Bird Johnson. Her favorite flower was the Texas Bluebell (according to the Wildflower Center), which I tried to draw here.

Her anklet is for the Colorado River, with the silver stars representing Lakes Travis, Austin, And Lady Bird (formally Town). The necklace is a pice of pink granite (the same used for the capital) wrapped in copper wire, made to look like a longhorn head.

The tattoos (that I'm probably keeping) are there: A star cupped by crossing bluebonnets, for her role as Texas capital. The UT logo on her right hip. A pecan leaf
n nut "anklet" around her left ankle. A cleft heart that will probably be moved to her neck or collar area.

She has a few pets. One is a Mexican Freetailed bat who lives under Congress st. Bridge, and who's name shall be Connor until I can think of something appropriate. The other is an armadillo, named Wille for Wille Nelson. If you get the reference as to why she has an armadillo, I love you forever.

"Live Music Capital of the World" is a title she is particularly proud of. She can play almost any instrument you hand her, though she prefers strings. Specifically, and old, acoustic Martin. She has a fairly versatile voice, though tends to gravitate to sounding more country like when singing. She was where the genre Outlaw Country was born, and that is where her heart belongs even with the more modern music scene emerging.

FOOTBALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! She takes it very seriously, even getting her college football team it's own network. She tries to distance herself from other Texans, but turn on a UT game and she'll morph into screaming, high-strung southern bomb with a sudden dislike for the state of Oklahoma.

While she has a HUGE football rivalry with OU and Texas A&M, she actually has a fair amount of respect for their universities. (In reality, it's mostly UT undergrads who care so much, plenty of UT professors and grad students don't hate the fans, and actually collaborate with people from two universities, or even go over to review a department)

Speaking of Texas A&M, College Station. Austin calls him "Aggie Bastard" in response to his "t.u." nickname, and they are most often seen at each others throats, both literally and figuratively. College Station has been trying to distance himself from it a bit, the final straw being the Longhorn Network. Austin is currently more pissed at him than usual for leaving for the SEC. Despite their rivalry, their relationship isn't all hate. Austin enjoys visiting him for the vet school, thinking it's cute. College Station likes that she's one of the few girls who doesn't have any qualms about getting rough. Their relationship isn't particularly friendly, but they are workout buddies, College being one of the few who can keep up with her.

She's an extremely active and athletic girl. She can often be seen jogging or riding her bike along the Hike and Bike Trail, swimming in Barton Spring, or practicing two of her favorite (yet oddly polarizing) sports, yoga and football wherever and whenever possible. She's one of the the healthiest cities in the country, and is the reason that all the Texans don't have enormous beer guts.

Her favorite time of year is Spring, which brings SXSW, the Austin Rodeo, the Kite Festival, wildflowers, and rain. She also enjoys fall, because it brings ACL Festival and the end of the oppressive summer heat.

A bit of an attention whore, though not in the usual sense. Her desire isn't to always be the direct center of attention, but to always be part of something where attention is focused, if that makes any sense.

Dell computers was founded in a dorm outside UT. Though generally adopts each new iPhone model she stays loyal to company, doing much of her business on her trusty Dell laptop.

The Memorial Day Flood occurred the weekend of its name in 1981. Shoal Creek and others saw a flow of 6 million gallons per minute, and 13 people drowned. Austin still had scars fro it on her back of her left knee, from being knocked by some unknown debris in the rapids.

Austin is (unfortunately but fairly so) known for its population of hipsters. While Austin does posses hipster-like characteristics, I know and respect too many old Austinites to actually make her one. Besides, Austin was a real hippy back in the day, so I'm sticking to that.

Austin is mine.

It's a few things really, like the Armadillo World Headquarters, Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, the little Armadillo on the Buy Local things, stuff like that.

Haha, nice.

Quick question, are you sitting on Enchanted Rock on your Deviant id?

Enchanted Rock is so nice. The only problem is, however, just when you think you are at the top, you really aren't. Kinda like life, you know...

Thanks so much! Austin is the character I think I've tried the hardest with, because I wan't to portray how awesome the city is, but really need to be careful about not making her a Sue.

I like seeing a personification of Austin that isn't boots and cowboy hats, yeehaw.

As an Austinite, I think this is a pretty accurate representation of the mentality of the city. Nice job! ;D

Haha, thanks! I honestly don't see how you could make an Austin character like that, it's got nothing to do with the city. Maybe boots for an out on the town kind of outfit, since I see way too many girls with short shorts and boots that've never been practically used.

Thanks a lot! I'm fleshing her out a bit soon, so hopefully she'll improve more. I truly love Austin, so it's gratifying to hear such a complement from someone like you.

Yeah, I don't own any "cowboy" boots. I do own some winter suede ones, but I can only wear them in like three months out of the year.

Great! I can't wait to see her improvements.

XD After reading that interview with Austin, months ago, I just had to fave this! She seems kind of wild, crazy and overwhelming in some ways, but she also seems quite friendly and lovable too.

Yay, thanks! Actually, that's exactly her in a nutshell. I really do love the city of Austin, so I'll be trying my best to work out Sue-ishness from her character.

She is sooooo cool; like I'd totally hang out with her. But then I would get a little nervous and not approach her. She seem like the type that would approach people first though, and try to make them feel comfortable. I really love her design; all the little details and everything is what takes the cake. Tattoos, adjklvkdjbv!! Also I say keeping her hair short, it's amazing that way. (Is a fan of short haired women.)

Overall she's amazing and can't wait to see more of her.

GryGirl8 In reply to Alexander-Rowe [2011-10-16 18:25:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Oh yeah, she's definitely a first move type, though for some people she might be a little over social for comfort. She tries though, being the capital and all she has to host people a lot. Oh the details were fun, I was able to stick a reference in pretty much everything! The tattoo also got a bit better here, not as randomly stuck on as her earlier designs. I think I will keep it short, it seems more fitting than long.

Thank you so much! You definitely will, I'm gonna be cranking out tons more cites, and actually have them interact.
