Description Wow, this is... really obscure Tolkien stuff. *is teh super nerd* Yey!

Anyway, Andreth, a human, and Aegnor, an elf. Their story is never really told -- it's briefly mentioned during a conversation *laughs*. The gist of it is that they loved each other, but since the elves don't wed during times of war, nothing came of it and it was never really expressed. Then he goes off and is killed in battle, and she never marries and eventually dies herself, and since the fates of the elves and men are different, they are split forevah. It's really pretty tragic.

And that apparently translates into awesome somewhere in my brain...

Quick picture done on an impulse -- ran across an old version I did and was so revolted that I needed to try again.

It's an unfortunate combination, but kind of the way this pairing is. If the picture comes across that way, I feel like I accomplished what I wanted!

Very beautiful... I love her dress.Β
Still, I believe, Aegnor was a jerk to not marry her. ^^

Thank you! I really hope that I can update this picture sometime - it's really dated from where I think my skills are now, and I want to do better justice to the images I had in my head. I kind of appreciated that their story ended differently from other elf/human couples... I appreciated the variation, even if it was depressing.

It may be nerd and obscure. But you are not the only one who knows this story. Look at the comments before and look at my nickname!!!!!! The Athrabeth helds the honor of being the only literary piece ever which actually made me CRY reading it. This drawing is very beautiful, and I love the sadness in their faces.
I like to think that one of the main reasons Finrod helped Beren is because his love story with LΓΊthien reminded him of this other sad story between his brother and Beren's great-aunt and thought it was time to "defy Doom" and attempt the impossible.

Frotu In reply to Andreth [2010-11-09 00:36:07 +0000 UTC]

I must say that I am mildly embarrassed by this picture... for such a moving and sad story, they certainly deserve something better T__T. Their story is so sad and beautiful... I think that, honestly, it touched me more than Beren and Luthien's. I'm sure that is in large part due to the fact that they ultimately were not together.

It seems that most of my Tolkien art is seriously outdated... so I should probably remedy that at some point in the near future. Nonetheless, I am happy that you like the picture.

It is interesting to speculate about things like that, isn't it? Finrod was awesome, so I can certainly see that your idea is possible.

Andreth In reply to Frotu [2010-11-09 07:31:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Beren and LΓΊthien's story has never impressed me very much. The story is nice but there are like other 20 in the Silmarillion that I prefer to read about before that one. Maybe I'm a bit strange, I don't know. In fact the more depressing a story is, the more I like it.

I think that the best thing about the Silmarillion (and other Tolkien's writings) is precisely that it gives you a lot of room for imagination and speculation, and you kind of complete the stories in your mind, and everyone does it differently

Wow, I think that you did a great job on this, the coloursare soft and the red background has something a bit sad about it.

I think it's one of the sadest love stories in Tolkien-verse. Heart-wretching and angsty... :/ it's even more tragic that they wouldn't be re-united even after death

Frotu In reply to yurrei [2009-09-29 22:44:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I definitely think I could have done better, but I have made a little progress since I drew that picture so maybe that's the thing. XD

Anyway, I totally agree. I feel that it was one of the saddest stories, and I thought it was really unfortunate that so few people actually know about it. Although I don't know many people who go out hunting for sad stories, but still.

I like the setting and the expressions on their faces. It's quite sad and tragic that Aegnor and Andreth never did get together.

It's nice to read about someone else who feels weird for knowing obscure Tolkien stuff.

Thank you very much! While in hindsight, I'm not all that pleased with this picture, I'm happy that there are some elements of it that others can enjoy.

I find my Tolkien knowledge more "amusing" than "weird"... although that probably isn't saying much, as things that are weird do tend to amuse me. XD Sadly, I've forgotten a good chunk of the things I used to know... *sigh*

I'm a pretty bad fan about things... horribly leech-ish, I suppose. I sort of lived and breathed Tolkien for a good four years, but at the end of that I had pretty much gone through all the material I could. Then it just took something new to catch my interest and off I went...

I still love Tolkien's works, though, and even if I don't immerse myself in the same way, I still get random fanart ideas here and there.

Oh, you're definately not alone *is teh uberest nerd* I LOVE Athrabeth! Every time I read it, I cry... it makes me want to smack silly Aegnor and Finrod, because we all know Andreth's despair is understandable... I mean, why couldn't they just defy it all and be together?

Anyway, lovely drawing! It's very sad and beautiful. I've got a drawing of Andreth in my gallery too; I'd love to hear what you think of it

PS--the whole sunset lighting/color is GORGEOUS!

Whee, more people who actually know what I'm talking about! That's really exciting... sometimes I feel weird knowing as much as I do just about the trilogy, before I even get sucked into talking about the other subjects!

Yeah... the story definitely is one where it's a battle of what is better in the long run and what is desired. Those are always awesome. *laughs* Still, I have to give kudos to Aegnor for even loving a mortal... wasn't he the only male elf to love a human? I always thought that was something.

I'm really happy that you like the picture! It's nice to know that I was able to do some sort of justice to their story!

Yes! Ringers unite! :giggles:

I have never been able to decide if it's at least nice that Tolkien at least mentioned the stories, or if it's annoying that all we get is a taste. It's very hard to decide what reaction is the stronger one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WishIWould In reply to Frotu [2007-12-19 09:45:57 +0000 UTC]

I think it's both, but especially nice. Because in my mind, I can develop an entire lay about their tragic tale. Or, as in the case of The Fall of Gondolin and Tuor/Idril's love story...I pictured writing out either a novelization or screenplay. Because it just rocks so hardcoreishly.

I'm a big fan of the half-elven pairings. ^_^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Frotu In reply to WishIWould [2007-12-20 01:34:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is nice to have some room to write stuff and imagine... but then again, Tolkien wrote such beautiful things that I can't help but wonder how he would treat some of those tales if he had written them in more detail.

Ah yes, Tuor and Idril. THAT was defnitely one I wanted more information about!

I enjoy those pairings, too. There's something extra special with them... more angst and whatnot. XD

SirithrosLirenel [2007-12-16 07:50:33 +0000 UTC]

Hurray! There's not enough art of the more minor Tolkien characters around... Love the colours, but Aegnor looks just a tad like Legolas xD Have you read the piece "The Debate of Andreth and Aegnor"? I think it's somewhere in the Histories of Middle Earth, if I remember rightly, but it's been ages since I had the time to touch them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Frotu In reply to SirithrosLirenel [2007-12-16 19:34:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I kinda messed around with Aegnor's hair for a while, and everything I tried kept looking worse. *laughs* So then I just ended up back at that... *sigh* Oh well, I guess it's not such a horrible thing that he looks like Legolas.

I believe it was from the debate that I got all of my information for this, actually. I don't remember which volume it is, but the book was Morgoth's Ring.

It's very yey when somebody else knows about these characters and stuff... it's definitely not the norm. On the note of minor characters, though, I would like to do one of Finrod and Amarie -- although they aren't quite as obscure, their story is one I still enjoy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SirithrosLirenel In reply to Frotu [2007-12-17 13:35:09 +0000 UTC]

Nah, he looks fine haha. Anyway "book" Legolas wasn't even supposed to be blond? ^^

I'd love to see more pictures of minor characters - Finrod in particular really intrigued me...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Frotu In reply to SirithrosLirenel [2007-12-18 00:16:02 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember it ever saying what color Legolas' hair actually was. I feel like I recall something about the wood elves tending to have dark hair, but then again Thranduil has blonde hair, so perhaps Legolas was blonde. Aaah, speculation... *laughs*

I'll give you a heads up if I manage to draw a picture of Finrod in the near future.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SirithrosLirenel In reply to Frotu [2007-12-18 11:41:34 +0000 UTC]

There's a brief sentence, if I remember correctly; something about Legolas' dark tresses or whatnot...? Besides, if Elvish genetics work any way like human ones, the light hair gene is recessive, and considering the relatively greater probability of Legolas' mother being dark (if she was indeed a wood-elf), Legolas would most probably not have been blond. xD

Sorry, got carried away there. A few years back when we first covered genetics in school I couldn't resist mapping out the genetics of all the elven lines!

I look forward to seeing any pictures you'd do of Finrod and/or Amarie! ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Frotu In reply to SirithrosLirenel [2007-12-19 08:58:59 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it mentioned it... I would say straight out that it doesn't because I KNOW that, when I read it three times in the course of a year, I was looking closely for it to say somewhere. However, that was a number of years ago, so I would hate to be so sure of something that might be hazy with time.

Aaand I know that I read about what people guessed about elven genetics. I remember this big thing about it and going "oooo..." over all the details. *laughs*

Of course, there is the fact that Thranduil was not a silvan elf -- he was a sindarin elf, as were most of the nobility (or however they are defined) who ruled over the silvan elves. Perhaps they were from a special group that was more likely to be blonde. I guess speculation really is impossible without knowing anything about his mother. Curses. Tolkien has foiled us again by giving us incomplete information!

SirithrosLirenel In reply to Frotu [2007-12-19 10:37:37 +0000 UTC]

It's almost annoying, how Tolkien leaves so much to speculation, but then I guess it also gives more "artistic lisence"? ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Frotu In reply to SirithrosLirenel [2007-12-20 01:36:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I suppose... but I have a feeling that Tolkien would probably be rolling in his grave about some of the stuff people have used "artistic license" over. *laughs/shudders*

SirithrosLirenel In reply to Frotu [2007-12-21 18:18:55 +0000 UTC]

LOL yeah. One of my all-time pet peeves is probably Thranduil the child-abuser! *sighs* It's hard being LOTR-crazy... Too many people associate you with the fangirls who are only in it for the "hotties" or they just don't get what you're talking about xD

Frotu In reply to SirithrosLirenel [2007-12-22 00:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Uuugh... I know. That and slash. It's just so rampant and... random, generally. I mean, sometimes I can at least understand why they might pair certain characters, but usually it's pretty ridiculous. And none of it's canon, which is irritating, too.

Geh. Yes. It's really sad when you get lumped with everybody else when you know so much background about the stories and love the tales and other people are just like "LOLOLOLOLZ! Legolas is HOTT!!11!" So depressing.
